Nikon file naming weirdness

I'm puzzled. I just uploaded some photos to my PC from my new Nikon D40, using Photoshop Elements 4.0. I saw a message saying that some of the photos hadn't been uploaded as files with the same names already existed. I okayed out of that message but then realised that about half of the 110 images weren't visible in the Photoshop Organiser - and they'd been deleted from the camera by this time... I checked in Windows explorer and was relieved to see the missing images there. Some had been renamed (original DSC_XXX with a -1, -2 etc after the filename) and others kept the old filename and the thumbnail seemed to be the new picture but when I clicked on it it would display first the original image but then change to the new one. The only way I could make Photoshop believe they existed was to rename them. So I reckon I was lucky this time but I don't want this happening again obviously. I can't see any file naming options on the camera that look as though they might solve the problem. Anyone have any idea what might be happening? Sorry this has turned into a bit of a ramble...

Did you have a Nikon before? Have you downloaded shots which would have had the same file name as these from the old camera?

If you have the disks from Nikon there should be an option on one of them to change the file naming, there is on Canons anyway.

you just need to upload the photos into another directory dude. Either that or there is a setting in the camera menu to make the numbers sequential. I.e the numbering carries on dsc0034, dsc_0035 etc when you switch memory cards.

Have a look at little program called DIM here It's great for moving and renaming photos as it does so and you can make it autorun when you stick a card in or connect the camera. It's free too :)

Thumbnail images can be confusing in XP. If you have the folder options set to cache the preview images, then they sometimes don't update.

Thanks for the replies.

@ruralscotland - I didn't have a Nikon before - had a Canon compact with a different naming convention. The duplicated files are shots that have been taken with the Nikon within the last couple of weeks (since I bought the camera).

@Ian - I'm not sure how my folder options are set up but it seems to me the problem must be within the camera if it's giving different files the same name..mustn't it?

@Gandhi - I'm not switching memory cards when this happens. And I don't really want to upload to a different directory - they're all going into a 2007 directory on my PC at the moment and that's how I'd like to keep it if I can. DIM looks good but it shouldn't be necessary should it? At the moment my file number sequence setting is 'off', which should mean it starts renumbering when you change memory cards or format a card (neither of which I've done). Perhaps I should switch that to 'on', so it continues the numbering sequence whatever happens. But the reason I'm puzzled is that it's not doing this with all files - or the other half of the 120-or so I uploaded yesterday would have been affected too.

Hark at me - rambling again... :)

Staarange.

So the shots you're uploading all have different filenames then? Weird.

I can't say I've ever really used the windows file transfer thingummy so I'm not sure what could be causing the problems then aside from filename conflicts.

I think uploading all your shots into one directory is going to cause problems too if you take a lot of photo's, I have 2,700 odd shots after I've deleted all the obvious dross.

And it's only the end of July
