Yes
I have just got an absolutely, new out of the box condition Nikon FE from a charity shop. Only trouble is it doesn't work. Does anyone know if it needs the batteries to work, I didn't think it did. Many thanks for looking.

THIS seems to indicate that it does need batteries.

If you switch the top dial to M90 it will operate through all operations at 1/90 speed, of course the meter will not function, but it will give you a good indication that the battery only needs to be replaced.

Yep, batteries required. Cracking little camera though.

Seals will probably be a little gummy. One of my favourite 35mm SLRs.

Nikon FE, superb camera, yep and it needs a couple of batteries. Can I ask what you paid in the charity shop?

And it does! Seems I have found myself a bit of a bargain. Off to buy some film now....

£5? Lucky git, black or chrome FE? with a lens?
I have an FE and it's my main 35mm film camera, i think it's a perfect blend of manual and automatic features, the manual metering system is very intuitive once you know how it works and if you don't the automatic metering is excellent since it's a variable shutter (can shoot odd shutter speeds like 1/79th or 1/697th if it think it's the best speed), so it's very accurate if you use exposure lock.

It is black with chrome upper, with a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens (no scratches or marks at all) and it's original case, although the 'leather' is flaking off and leaving the material behind. Why don't cameras have these cases any more I wonder?

I am delighted with it, I read somewhere that they were often used by pro's as back up cameras as they were so reliable and could be used without batteries.

Sounds great. I loved my FE, but in a mad moment gave it to my brother! At least he seems to be using it though, so OK I suppose.

It's just one of those beautifully designed simple to use cameras that has everything you need and nothing you don't.

The lens is a cracker too.

FE isn't much use without batteries though - only one shutter speed. It's probably the FM or FM2 which was more often used as a backup as they operate at all speeds without batteries.

That would be the FM and FM2, actually. Nikkormats were the original back up cameras, and then eventually it would be an FM (although the reliability of the Nikon F series meant that backups were used rarely).

Now I have discovered it is actually working and after a couple of days agonizing I have given it back to the charity (it is a local Hospice) to sell at a proper price. They have an eBay shop where they can no doubt get more than £5 for it.

No qualms about getting a bargain from a business if they get something wrong but I don't feel the same about a charity, their need is greater than mine TBH.

Very noble of you. They should get at least £100 for it if it's as minty as you say, which I'm sure they'll appreciate.
