Yes
As much as I would love the Nikon 17 - 55 f2.8 it costs a bomb and not even wife pounds would swing this one. :D

So that leaves me with the Tamron and Sigma equivalents.

Out of the two which would you go for?

I've had both Tamron and Sigma 17-50 f2.8's and both been cracking lenses

Currently have the Sigma and i've never found fault with it, it's on my camera 90% of the time

Tamron I would say - used to have it on my D7100

Just so happens I may have one for sale soon [emoji56]

I have had the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC before. Nice lens, good IQ and not too pricey either. BUT... I replaced it with the Nikon 17-55 and the difference was night and day! The focus speed and build quality are exceptional.

It's worth the extra cash if you can talk the good lady around. :D

Various reviewers seem to think the Tamron non-VC is sharper and faster than its VC version. So if you need lens stabilisation and don't want to pay through the nose for the Nikkor.....which BTW is a big heavy chunk of glass to walk about with, then the Sigma is go to lens.

To my mind, that means it has build quality....plastic weighs less than glass and metal.

Used Nikkor 17-35 f2.8 - you wouldn't lose a penny on it if you used it for a few years and went to sell it on.

I tried the Sigma 17-50 and the Tamron 17-50 VC before I got the Nikon 17-55, both had good IQ and were nice enough to use (but the Siggy drove me mad as the rings work the wrong way for Nikon) .. in truth I couldn't see much difference between them and the Nikon 17-55 in IQ terms. But the Nikkor just worked, everytime no matter what the light it nailed focus, never hunted and was fast. In testing light the Tamron and Siggy often hunted and sometimes failed to lock on. The Nikon is built like a tank too, so it does weigh a bit more, but not bad imo/e. If I went for a non Nikon it would be the tammy, simply because the rings move in the right direction - may not matter to you, did to me :)

I am just about to buy one or t'other. I can't justify the cost of the Nikon no matter how tempting it is.

I am leaning towards the Tamron as I imagine the focus rings moving the other way will drive me mad too.

Is there any issue ordering via Amazon, the convenience of the Amazon locker suits me but I am worried about fakes if such a things exists with lenses.

Shouldn't be an issue if you buy direct from Amazon. Just return it if you're unhappy.

Can't tempt you with a Sigma, no?

It is a tempting price. :D

I am just mulling over the focus ring pros and cons. :D

I thought it would drive me mad too when i bought the Sigma, but after a couple of days i just got used to it, now i don't even think about it

Saying that, i don't actually own any Nikkor Zooms, the only Nikkor glass i own is a 300mm f4, all my other lenses are either Tamron or Sigma (oh, and a Tokina too, just for good measure), so doesn't really matter to me which way the ring zooms
