Just picked up an old Nikon F801 for fun and bought a Nikon 50mm 1.8d separately.

I can’t seem to shoot in Aperture priority, it seems only shutter priority or program modeare accessible. If I pop the camera into A mode I get an [E] on the display & the camera only shoots at f22.

I thought the old 1.8d would have been compatible with the F801.

Any ideas?

Move the aperture ring on the lens to f22 or as small as it will go for auto aperture.

Should be fine. Do you have another compatible body you can test the lens on? (you may need to enable aperture ring control if you have a later body that can control aperture from a command dial). Do you have another compatible lens with an aperture ring you can test on the F801?

Sadly not, just picked up a cheapo lens from MPB to put on the body..... Not having much luck really, the F801 body I bought turned up with no battery holder and it appears as if the lens doesn't work properly either.... think someone's trying to tell me something!

You could remount the lens to make sure it clicks in place properly, check the mechanical contacts on the camera and the lens for damage, and make sure the electrical contacts are clean. These pages are for a different error, but show some of the things to check:
There is also apparently an 'undocumented reset' (which I haven't tested):

Thanks for these, much appreciated.
Tried the reset and a quick clean of the contacts and still no joy. I guess the lens must be a bit of a duffer!

The camera seems to recognise the lens in P mode and Shutter priority, so it’s an odd one. I think I’ll run a quick roll through it in P mode and check everything works... guess I’ll have to take it from there if it all works as it should.

My 50mm AF-D lens has to be set to F22 and there's a small switch on the aperture ring to lock it into place. It doesn't seem to make a difference if it's locked or not when I attach it to my F70 or F80, but it might be worth a try in case.

Thanks. That crossed my mind as I had to do the same with the F80 I used to own, but alas no joy
Might still be a camera rather than a lens issue. Thinking about this, maybe there's an issue with the AI tab? - worth checking this for damage:
Thanks again for the info. I’ve checked the mount and all seems as it should and the moving parts are all moving. Likewise I’ve checked the lens and all moving parts are as they should be.

Without another lens/body I can’t tell which is the issue... will have to wait until we can get a bit closer to other people and borrow a lens or body from somewhere to try!

Just to double check, where are you seeing the 'E' ? If on the bottom right of the top plate LCD, that means there's a film problem. Either no film, it's wound back into the can or you haven't loaded it properly. If FEE appears in the aperture display, that means you're trying to shoot in Program or Shutter Priority without the lens set to F22. Err with Auto ISO selected means you're using a film without DX coding.

I think those are the only places an E error might occur?
