It's the FE (M90) and FE2 (M250) that needs batteries and has one fixed speed without them -- the batteries still last a very long time even with regular use.
I only know that as a pro friend of mine bought two FM2s to replace FMs. He had so much trouble with the shutters that he got rid of them and went back to FMs.
I didn't like the F4 as it had the same plasticy feel as the F801 I had, the F3 always felt far superior. Then again I learnt on an FE which I still like today.
My favorite modern film camera is the F100 with grip as it is brilliant to hold and has a very modern spec, I have never tried the F5 though so have been looking for a cheap one on Ebay.
