Hi folks, I just purchased the above lens, second hand off Ebay ( Nikon f2.8 80-200mm ED lens non D)

I've run through all settings including manual and auto focus all work ok. I've also used the focus lock/limiter in all positions.
Here's the thing :
Between 80-105 mm (approx) it will not focus past about 40-50 feet ,that is to say from 40ft to infinity it wont focus, it does'nt matter whether I use manual or auto focus. I'm using it on a Nikon D700 anyone else come up against this or got any ideas? Btw I've removed the lens filter used to protect it as I once, many moons ago bought a brand new lens from a camera shop supplied with filter which actually fouled the lens stopping it focusing @ Infinity ,so that is not the problem .....

All the Best

Sounds like the focus limiter.

Is it the one touch lens or separate zoom and focus rings?

It's the one touch ,Push-Pull lens, does'nt matter which position I put the focus limiter ring in , Ive tried all 4 settings that it has ............

Does the focus limiter work as expected otherwise?
Is it the older one with the focus limit ring or newer one with focus limit switch and crinkle coating on the zoom barrel?

Edit, Just noticed you said "limiter ring".

I'm looking at mine, with it off the camera and set to manual, I focus to infinity and notice that the shoulder at the end of the front part of the lens (which rotates upon focus) comes down to meet the part of the barrel that has the focus scale window in it, I take it yours won't get this far?

Thanks Andrew . This is the lens : http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/af80200.jpg

I was only using it set to the Full position,I hav'nt actually tried to see if the limiter is actually doing it's job in the other positions.Though I did try focusing at infinity with the ring set in all the positions available.

Yup, that's the same lens I have and the picture you linked shows what I meant by the shoulder coming down to meet the barrel.

Will your lens go into that position or when you try and focus to infinity is the front left sticking out more than the lens pictured?

Ok Andrew , thanks for spending the time here. Yes I just checked, the collar does come down and touch and at that point the indication in the window is just past infinity symbol but not as far as the 80 mark. Not sure what the 80 mark signifies.

That's as far as mine ( and I presume any example of this lens ) focuses towards infinity.
Do you mean that if you attach the lens to a camera and look through it that act of turning the focus ring doesn;t alter the focus of the image?
Sorry if I'm being thick I just can't figure out what's actually wrong with your lens.

Its just occurred to me to try it on my D70s n check all these points out tomorrow in daylight . I will let you know what I find .Its the one thing I hav'nt done.

Thanks for the help .

Ok cool.
Mine will sometimes drag it's ass a bit about refocusing if I'm using af-c and recompose or something moves etc and the AF isn't exactly snappy but other than that I've been pretty happy with it.
