Hi there,

I went to the National Motor Museum down in the new forest and I got to use an EOS 40d for the day, and after I had got used to the different controls I was amazed at the Canons low light quality and I also liked how the camera felt, it's a lot heavier than my usual camera my Nikon D40 but I preffered the extra weight of the Canon.

I was planning to upgrade my D40 over the next couple of months with a D300 and a fancy lens but now not so sure. I am not too familare with the Canon product lineup, so which Nikon would feel similar in terms of quality to the Canon? Is the D300 similar in quality/size/feel?

Thanks for your help!

Actually, I'd say the D300 was somewhere between the Canon xxD series and the xD series. Its got some of the prosumer type stuff, but equally has the "pro class" AF features of the 1D series and also lacks the "mickey mouse" shooting modes of the xxD series, having only shutter, aperture, program and manual modes like the 1D.

There is no direct comparison to be honest, its fairly unique.

The only comparisons i have seen have been with the Nikon D200, so, its still a fair step away from the D300

Why not upgrade to a 40d and get more lenses for your cash then the d300 and a single "fancy" lens?

since when is the D300 a lens :p

Thanks for your replies.

I don't want a D200 because of their low light abilitys or rather lack of. I had my heart set on a D300 just after playing with the 40d I now am not so sure. I guess it's all irrelevent until I actually have the cash physically in my hand and go out and have a play with both the in the shop and then decide which I really want.

Thanks.

Just curious as to your D200 concerns... if you know what you are doing the D200 is just fine in low-light. What is the problem you are having? Did you read the manual?

What Andy said.

There's not a lot wrong with the d200 in low light.

Unless you've actually owned one, taken pictures with it, got to know it, then how do you know that it's poor in low light?? Because someone said so??

If I listened to everything that was said and written about any camera I've ever owned, then I wouldn't have any. Reviews are fine up to a point, but too subjective. For every good review, there will be a bad one, and for every bad one, a good one.

Look at how popular a camera is, and how difficult it is to buy a copy used, and whether it holds it's value - there is the true indication of whether it is good or not.

It's a well respected camera the D200, a true workhorse, and one of the best Nikons EVER. Period.

I have had a serious play with my D200 today in low light and is perfect heres one

I think James means higher ISO noise issues... that shot is ISO200....

Whether or not the D200 performs as well as the D300 he mentions in high ISO settings is a different matter...

This is iso100 exif says 200 for some reason???? but it was set at 100

I think i have sussed it ....in aperture mode does the d200 set the iso as auto (I am new to this camera) as I have just realised it sets iso range as it sees it untill I turn it off

D80/D90 is the nikon equivelent of the 40D

In my experience (and having just done an upgrade similar to yours) the Canon and Nikon ranges overlap. In my opinion *duck* the list goes something like D40 400D D60 450D D80/90 40D D200/300 (didn't look higher than this).

I'd say a more important question is which lenses you prefer. Most pros say the best camera in the world is the one they've used for the past year and know. Lens quality though can't be "learnt". It's either sharp or it ain't. Like MJ Stebbings said, keep some cash for good lenses, rather than blowing it all on the camera.
