Yes
I know about Canon lenses, IS,USM, L glass etc but i dont know the abreviations for similar stuff in Nikon lenses, im currently eying up my christmas present and dunno the difference between Nikon lenses other than price.

I know DX is a term used but not sure what it means  can anyone point me to something that will explain it all.

DX just means it's designed for the cropped sensors in digital SLR's.

Nikon doesn't have comparable letter(s) to the Canon L series, or Sigma's EX series etc. With the exception of VR (vibration reduction) that I guess can be compared to the inferior Canon IS system ;)

You can normally compare them on focal length and aperature, and then add on a couple of hundred £££ for the Nikon version

I always thought the Canon L series was similar in spec to the ED Nikkors? Aimed at Pro users they tend to be faster and more expensive (and I know the ED merely denotes the use of Extra-Low Dispersion Glass, before anyone chips in...).

the problem (or rather not) is that they put ED elements in the cheaper lenses too. it's just that they put only 1 in not 5 or however many there are in the more expensive ones. so although my 18-70 has some ED glass in it and is called an ED lens (and is rather good and middle posh i 'spose), it is obviously not a patch on your 17-35 f2.8 ED (or the new 17-55) rob.

best judge it on price lee, and if it has a fixed aperture - then it's probably posh!

AF-S is the same as USM on canon

DX - designed for digital SLR

VR - Vibration Reduction (IS)

ED - Extra-Low Dispersion Glass

D - Lens provides distance info to the camera

G - Lens has no aperture ring. All the G series are also D.

IF - Internal Focus.

Micro - Macro

PC - Perspective controll (tilt/shift)

Spend £1200 to £1500 (for up to 80-200mm...They get more pricey bigger than that...) and you won't go far wrong...

Ah yes (shameless plug...) - my brand-new, unused 17-35 going cheap in the classifieds section.

Let me see if I've got this right

That about right Rob? :p

I'm only joking guys ;)

actually, that could be taken wrongly and twisted to show the 100-400L is only as good as a milk bottle. hmmmm. oh well, it was a good joke when it existed only in my head

That full range of Canon lenses looks like it was taken with a 5D with all that vignetting too......

Looks it was tongue in cheek, just a light bit of banter..... ;)

Can you imagine this thread in the 'old' days? A certain Mod would be biting our legs off...
