Does anyone have any direct experience of comparing Nikon EN-EL4A batteries against 3rd Party compatibles?

I need a couple of spares and I was wondering if the cheaper compatibles were any good?

The official one is 2500mAh where as the compatibles I've found are either 1800, 2100 or 2300mAh so I'd expect a lower number of shots per charge, what sort of difference could I expect? Alternatively does anyone know of any higher capacity ones?

I'm also wondering if anyone has used 3rd party clones of the BL-3 battery cover for the D700/D300 grip or the BL-4 battery cover for the D3 series, and whether they are worth looking at.

I've asked the same question on a different forum and most answers come down to berating me for spending 'so much' on a camera and then trying to cheap out on batteries and not to 'risk it'. I've got D700 and D300s and a cheap Meike grip, so a couple of 3rd party EN-EL4a batteries and a charger have been on my list for a while. I'll be keeping my eyes on this thread...

i used an energizer en-el4 compatible in an mb-d10 grip the d300 and the d300s both won't recognise it, they momentarily powered up then closed down they did not register on the camera's meter in the menu, now using genuine battrey and alls well.

greysofwestminster have a good deal on at the moment the en-el4a and the charger £195 new

I thought that might be one response (I realise that you've not given it) but my thinking is that if they are good why spend £90 each when £30-40 each will do :)

I've quite happily used 3rd party compatibles from 7dayshop for the EL3e for years from a recommendation from here and they have been great (and more mAh to boot too), but I also know that not all batteries are the same hence the question. If the responses are generally that the 3rd parties are generally poor then I will happily spend the money on the Nikon ones, but if the response is generally good then I'd give them a go.

Cheers for the feedback - energizer is out then lol

Simon, check out MPB in the sponsored link at the bottom of the page ,they have a battery cover goining for £10

We have a couple of UniRoss branded batteries for both the D2x and the D3. They're still going well after at least 3 years use! ;)

Tbh, I've noticed very little difference in performance or number of shots, but I've never really monitored it very carefully in all fairness. I'd probably buy them again without much hesitation, although I usually prefer to buy OEM kit.

Problem I have found is that Non OEM do not last as long (life time) or hold the charge as well.

I've just been testing a EL9 ?? Energiser battery for the D5000, I can report no problems with it

Excellent value for money

I friend had problems with another brand (can't recall) but it cuased the D70 to crash

I use the 7 Day shop EnEL4 battery at £16.99 delivered they work fine on my D3 but will not register as being there on my D700 with Nikon MB10 grip.

So I use the genuine Nikon ENEL4a in the D700 and the cheap ones in the d3 :)

Not noticed any difference in life between them.

I only bother with the batteries - I have 3 (genuine) batteries for each body but only one cover for each - the batteries last long enough that you should never get 'caught-out' while actually shooting.
TBH they last so well that I never actually need to change batteries other than just for the sake of rotating them in order to keep them conditioned.
