Yes
My first/usage, at current rate (excuse the pun) I'm due to run out at 300 shots.

I had three batteries on my D300 and each one would last for 500/600 shots.

I have a second battery now for the D610 so I'll see how that goes.

Your experiences?

Also, does anyone still do an overnight first charge?

Is that 300 shots in one day? Or a few here, a few there?

I used to get bazillions* from the En-EL15 in my D7000, especially if it was lots in one day (shooting motorsport)

*more like a couple of thousand

Few here and there. I'm on still on the very first use, though. Down to 29% with 200 frames taken.

What lenses are you using? There was a thread recently and it became apparent that Sigma OS could be continually engaging of battery power

So far, only 50mm f1.4 AF-D.

If this is over a period of days or weeks then there is always a drain on a battery when in the camera, it is a tiny amount, but it's there. New batteries should be fully charged before using them according to the manuals - I do this as there can be no harm in doing so. I can easily get 900 or more shots a day with one battery.

The battery wll take a few charge/discharge cycles to get to full capacity so wait until you've used it a bit more and see how it goes.

Under normal conditions I get 500 (ish) shots from an EN EL15 (in a d800). Which is substantially less then I would get from the battery in a d700 (the same as the d300). The change is because the very high mAh batteries that where previously used became illegal in Japan so Nikon had to change

It wasn't the battery capacity that was the problem, it was the exposed contacts potentially causing a fire if the battery was shorted out. The EN-EL15 is actually a higher capacity than the EN-EL3 it replaces. I suspect driving that huge sensor in the D800 is the problem because the same battery gives far more shots in the D7000 and D7100.

Charge a camera battery, and leave it there for a while, it will self-discharge any way. If you shoot continuously at something like a sporting even and flatten the battery through actual shooting, you'll get well over 1000 shots per charge. Let it sit there for days at a time between shooting, and you'll get a few hundred.

My advice is, get a spare battery. It's good practice any way.

I also use a grip with Sanyo Eneloop XX batteries in it. They hold their charge for a very long time. In fact they'll only lose around 15% if left there for up to a year.

Generally though, brand new batteries require a few charge/discharge cycles before they perform their best.

Shooting style massively affects performance though. Lots of live view use will kill your batteries. Shooting a few frames, then leaving it for days or weeks, then shooting again etc, will also not get you many frames per charge.
