Nikon DX lens choices

Not the usual what lens thread, just been thinking to myself this afternoon and couldn't come to a conclusion. So I'll throw it out to you guys. The scenario is:

-You only have Nikon DX bodies: D7000 or D300/s
-You are allowed to choose 5 lenses
-They have to cover the range of at least 14mm-200mm sufficiently
-Primes or Zooms acceptable or even a mixture!
-Can be a mixture of Nikon and 3rd party

What lenses would you choose?

Nikon 35mm af-s f1.8
Nikon 17-55 (or sigma equiv)
70-200 sigma (or Nikon 70-300vr) Although rarely used for me in this range

When I was DX only I was very happy with just the 18-105VR and a D90 at first, then I got the Sigma 10-20mm and was delighted with that, then a 70-300VR - loved that as well, and finally the bargain that is the 35mm 1.8G. If was DX only again I'd probably go for the Nikon 10-24 wide zoom (the 20mm long end of the Sigma was an occasional annoyance), 35mm 1.8G and 70-300VR once more, nice 3 lens kit that. Never a massive fan of the mid-range zoom, I had a 17-55 DX for a while but it was neither wide enough when I wanted wide, nor long enough when I wanted long - when I was in the middle I wished I had the 35mm on so I didn't keep that for long

17-55 is a superb lens, as is the 70-200 and the 300F4, get a TC or two and your sorted...........

Okay I know its 6 lenses! This is what I would realistically be able to build up pretty soon for use in photo and video!

My dream kit would be similar:

Nikon 17-55 f2.8
Nikon 70-200 f2.8
Zeiss 35mm f1.4
Zeiss 50mm f1.4
Zeiss 85mm f1.4

The Zeiss 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.4 are probably two of their weaker offerings, I would suggest the 50 f2 and 100 f2 in their place ... cost you a lot more but hey it's your dream

Thats only the dream DX kit, don't even let me think about FX

Well I am begging you to borrow them to me permanently so I don't have to steal - Joking man, I would love to be able to own the 24-70 and 70-200. I am just a little bit jealous!

Thats My list, its only 4 lenses, and i cheekily included a flash but this would cover 100% of my wants in photography, and I have no interest in going FX so not sure i'll ever change cameras, lifespan of hardware permitting.

I think this is always important! Consider what you want to shoot rather than buying the most expensive kit possible.

A DX 17-55 f2.8 and a (non-DX) 80-200 f2.8 (or 70-200) will get you most of the way, and in some considerable style

I will be adding a 10-24 to those two next and buying a new teleconvertor

This plus the 70-200 AFs VR and 300 2.8.

Depending on the 17-55 (I don't know quite how good it is) I might consider dropping the 35 and adding in a nice macro, either the 105 or the 70-180.

Is go with what I have (or a varient of if I had the cash:

*14mm f/2.8 - I have the sigma at the moment because it focusses down to a few inches. If I had the money, it'd be the Nikon 14-24mm.

*17-55mm - no doubt the best walkabout lens for DX. Perfect in every way.

*70-200mm VR - brilliant lens that's well suited to DX use.

*One fast prime such as a 50mm or an 85mm. Have the former in f/1.8 form and sold my f/1.8 85mm, which is the one lens I now want back.

*One specialist lens: I like my 60mm macro, good portrait optic.

It seems the 17-55 and 70-200 are most recommended zoom combo

Here's what I have for my D7000

50mm F1.4G
24-70 F2.8
70-200 F2.8 VRII
Micro 105mm F2.8
TCE III 2.0

Obvious weak spot is a wide angle but I really don't have much call for it at the moment and I find the 24-70 works very well for me as a walkabout. I have a young family and find that range much better for taking photo's of little people. I do have my old 18-70 that I used with my D70 but I have never found the need for it.

Although I don't cover the wide angle end (never really had a need for it) I'd go for almost what I have:-

18-200mm for general walkabout holidays etc

35mm 1.8 for some indoor stuff

85mm 1.8 for indoor sports and portraits (I love this lens)

70-200mm 2.8 for outdoor sports

55-300mm also for outdoor sports, though I'd swap this for a 300mm 2.8 if I had the opportunity
