I'm thinking about getting a Nikon DK-17M Magnifying Eyepiece for my D700, just wondered who on here uses them and what you think, are they a worthwhile investment, are there any drawbacks in using them etc etc, all thoughts much appreciated :)

These are superb - well worth putting on a D700. First thing I do with a new D700 is "GGS" it, and DK-17m it :)

Do they inhibit seeing the outer edges of the frame?

Not really.. possibly you need to make a slight effort to look down to read the exposure info at the bottom. When I sold my D700 2 months ago, I removed the DK-17m and put the stock one back on, and was so suprised by how pokey the "naked" VF felt, especially compared to my Sony A900.

Do it. I'd hate to have to be without it now.

Does anything similar exist that will fit the D300? I had a google but couldn't find a Nikon equivalent for the D300.

Barney

P.S. Sorry if I'm hijacking your thread.

Bought one soon after getting my D700 and a rubber eyecup. Used that combination before with other cameras. Definately a preference for me.

Hi Barney, the D300 needs the DK-21M. It magnifies to x1.17 and costs £27 inc post from Amazon. Rob

I got one on puddleducks's recommendation! Defo worth and it's not a massive outlay- go for it!

In my experience the D300(s) with DK-21M made things worse. On the D90 I liked the magnification as there was no down-side, but I think that the D300s' viewfinder is slightly larger (perhaps logical since 100% coverage) and thus makes seeing the edges of the image and HUD a bit of a strain. This is my fear with the DK-17M and D700...puddleduck seems to be validating that concern, though I'll probably pull the trigger on that soon. I'll install a split-prism first...

I had the DK-21 on my D90 and it was brilliant. Impossible to go without it after having used it!

My new D700 viewfinder is great to use compared to the D70s/D300/D40/D90 I have had to date, but I'll probably give a magnifier a try if I can find a decent used one on eBay.

Indeed i put a GGS on from day one and certainly a worthwhile investment  it does seem the DK-17M is also worthwhile from the overall response, and many thanks for all the replies, i think i'm going to go over to Calumet tomorrow to get one

I've just ordered one from Stuart at Digital Depot, £22.99 I think it was from the UK. He is adding it on to his next Nikon order for me. Not actually used one myself but spoken with several people who have.

EDIT: yes just checked £22.99.....

Just got mine (DK-17M + DK-19 rubber eyepiece) and my impression is it's good - but not the uncompromised improvement seen with the DK-21M on D90. I don't think it's quite as bad in the corners as the DK-21M on D300s, but there's definitely some vignetting and obscuring of the corners/HUD compared to the unmagnified D700 viewfinder. I'm managing to nail focus at wide apertures in my dark office with little struggle, so hopefully that bodes well for when my brightscreen arrives...
