Thinking that I should be moving my 18-135 along to make some room for something a bit faster that will compliment my current lineup of 70-300VR, 50 1.8, 11-18 Tamron and Sigma 105 macro.

I think that I want more all round decent quality, non prime.

This is going to cost more than I want, so looking for a reasonable next step up from the 18-135. Economy will need to play a part as budget is yet to be discussed with HID.

Any thoughts?

That old favourite, the Tamron 17-50 would fit nicely into your lens line up.

Looks as if a used Tamron runs to maybe £30-40 extra over what your Nikon lens is worth.

Oh - a great point. What is the 18-135 worth and where would I get the 17-50 from at that sort of price?

A quick look at Fleabay suggests around £140 for the 18-135, £175 or so should get you a secondhand 17-50 :thumbs:
 
The Tamron 17-50 should be a nice upgrade optically, I think the swap will cost you around £50 (I think its worth it).

Are you sure you really want to do this though Chris, as you seem to have been after an 18-200 VR for months.... ? Whats the reason for the chance of direction?

I have started using (your) 70-300VR recently - I am also a bit concerned that the quality of the 18-200 is a trifle suspect. The prices of these seem to be going down pretty rapidly recently also.

I am also a bit concerned that the Tamron is too cheap - is the Sigma 17-70 any better? Am I better going for the Nikon? Next holiday is to Grand Canyon/Death Valley area and think that faster glass is goijng to do me better, especially when stitching.

Well I've shot a lot of landscapes with the Tamron 17-50 and can't fault it - sharp wide open, and excellent (as most lenses are) stopped down.

The Sigma 17-70 is a very good, but I can't see much mileage in swapping one variable aperture zoom for another. Its f/4.5 on the long end, so not "fast glass" either.

think that faster glass is goijng to do me better, especially when stitching.

Not sure what you mean here?
