Having just come through a nasty break up I have unfortunately lost me D300 to the ex... (A christmas present he has now reclaimed... GIT!) lol

ANyway, I am now looking at buying another dslr but my budget of £700 won't stretch to a D300

I am looking at the D5000 and D90, and am struggling to find an awful lot of difference between them.

I will be maily using it for action shots of my horses and portraits of my children... I finally mastered the manual settings on the D300 so don't 'need' the scene modes and I like the added bonus of being able to take the odd video clip on both these models...

Anyone know of any major advantages of one over the other... I am leaning towards the D90 at the moment, but could be easily swayed! lol

basically the d5000 is cack, ignore it, it doesn't exist...move on...nothing to see here :)

lol thanks for your thoughts!! Why did Nikon bring out a camera so simlar to the D90 to you think? Seems a bit odd...

They are prety much the same feature for feature i dont think the d90 back swivels out as such the D5000 swings it for me, but still want a D300:D

D90 for me. The D5000 just seems to be a waste of time, don't know what its for really.

I am also torn between the D5000 and D90. I like the screen feature on the D5000 but everyone tells me the D90 is better, but I cant see how if it is the same?? There must be something better about the D90 because it is more expensive.

The D90 has AF in the body whereas the D5000 doesn't - this is a big plus for the D90 IMHO.

i was about to say that. might as well just get a d60 or d40 instead of the d5000 otherwise it has to be the D90. D90 is on my wishlist!

Ok thanks for that... looks like it's a D90 then.... I did think about a D300 ut I get the VAT back on new stuff and not second hand so it's better to go for new...

I have now got my life back in order so will be on here more trying to learn as much as I can!

I think your options should be 2nd-hand D300 or new D90. Ignore the D5000, as has been suggested.

also the d5000 feels flimsy i think, especially the swivel screen, feels like it'll fall off if you breath on it IMO. I'd go for a 2nd D300 personally.

Find a second hand D300, it wont be that much more if not £700

Ebay have some offers on atm (I got an email yesterday)

try and find one for £750, eBay will pay 10% brining it down under £700

only buy from a reputable seller though

just saw an ad on here for a lens

AF on D50/D70/D80/D90/D100/D200/D300 ect

MF only with the D40/D40x/D60/D5000

So there is another reason to go for the D90?

Have to agree with Whitey, add a few (and I mean a few) more quid to your budget and get a used D300. They are selling on here for about £750 upwards. I've not had a D90 or D5000 in my hands, but from what I've read the build quality is the first noticable difference. Stick to what you know, that's what I think.

Hmmmm well I just went down to PC WOrld and Currys and tried to get a D90 but they only sell it with a 18-105 lens - and I already have the exact lens! Very unhelpful and wouldn't budge on selling it seperately...

I did have a look at it whilst I was there and my first impression was how much smaller than the D300 it is! Which, is possibly not all bad as I did find the 300 heavy, especially with my 70-200 lens attached (also stolen back by ex :o( ) But will I find the D90 'toy-like' in comparision? Decisions decisions... maye I need to keep an eye n Ebay for a used 300... problem is though I am wary of buying one that turns out to be broken or something...

Was also planning on getting the accidental damage cover from Currys too which obviously I can't do if I buy from ebay...

Noticed theres a couple for sale in the classified section. May part with the bodies...?

I'd go for a second hand D300 if I were you. It's a good enough camera but if you're used to something better... I reckon you'd regret downgrading to a D90.

i must get to have a try or look at these nikons
back to your original thought of the d90, is that it has the abilities of movie clips

They are essentially the same. I believe (Correct me if i'm wrong) that the only difference is besides the gimmicky screen, is that the d5000 has an AF motor meaning you are not only limited to AF-S lenses and can use AF and AF-D lenses :)

I tried them both out a jessops before i decided and went for the D90

It felt a lot better to handle , but that's just my opinion

cant really fault it

good luck with your choice

TT

Handle both cameras and you will immediately see. The viewfinder alone on the D90 is worth the extra!

If you're used to higher resolution screen of the D300, then the D5000 may not look as sharp, or be as useul for checking focus. But then the articulating screen could be seen as a plus, as long as it is not on a tripod. ;)

The D5000 being smaller may or may not, be comfortable with larger lenses. Something to look in to if you intend to get larger lenses at some point.

Break into ex's and steal them back!

D90 is a nice camera, you get AF in body but lose the moveable viewfinder which for me is a no contest. Have to say, I found the d90 much bigger and better than the d90 and fear I would love the d700 even more?

Sell your soul to the devil and get a d700.

It's funny nobody mentioned either the D200 or Fuji S5 pro, both still very good camera's and both can be had for less than both the D90 & D5000 new, if you can find one that is.

Otherwise i would go for the D90.

But if you can hang on a couple more months, few very silly people will be trying to flog of their D300 cheap to replace it with a D300s.
