Hi All and Happy New Year

Mr Christmas bought me a Nikon D90 this year to replace my very old Canon D60 and man what a step up, photos are soooooo much better.

I only have one issue with the D90, the half press on the shutter release. There doesn't seem to be one and the shutter release is like a point ansd shoot camera, is there a setting I need to change within the menu or do I have a fault.

Would really appreciate your help

Stenna

The camera should auto focus on the first stage of the shutter press.

Does your one focus OK ?

The D90 should auto focus with a half press on the shutter release.
It can also lock auto exposure with that, but a menu change is needed to enable it.

Check the menu for the focus item just to be sure.

Worth checking that your in 'S' autofocus mode not 'C' or 'M'' as otherwise you won't notice a discernible beep and it'll just focus continually or not at all.

Thx for your advise.

It will auto focus and do the lock the exposure but if i want to recompose the shot I cant as it's working like a point and shoot.

Are you keeping the shutter release button pressed half-down while you re-compose ?

What AF setting do you have it on?

You can also use the AE-L/AF-L to focus and the sutter just for taking the pics, just throwing the option out there

I dont get an opotunity to recompose, as I say its like it has a point and shoot setting

Maybe I need to get back to the shop to show the issue

I tried that the other day as a get around but with my big hands the space is tight behind the camera when using the view finder

Have you tried......

Just in case you haven't found it yet:

1) Make sure the focus switch on the left hand side of the body is set to AF not M.
2) Press the 'AF' button on the top of the body until you see 'AF-A' in the control panel. This is the default setting and is probably best until you know your way around the camera a bit better.

If you are currently in continuous mode then the control panel (top of body) will probably be showing 'AF-C'.
