Nikon D90 reviews needed

Absolutely not!

The D90 comes with a hard screen protector for the LCD.
Its strongly advisable to get a UV filter (which may be what they suggested) for the lens (just clear glass to protect the front optics) but I've always found jessops to be a bit of a rip off for these... Still, better to ruin a £10 filter than a £100+ lens!

I'd also suggest that for just starting out (depending on what photography you plan on ) the pop-up flash should be fine!
 
I went from D40 to D80 to D90 and I love my D90. I have no intention of upgrading it for quite some time yet.
Fantastic camera and very capable. Its not the newest out there but its still every bit as good.
 
I went from D40 to D90 and loved it - only sold it to go for the D300 which is better suited to what I do (more controls and build). Hard to fault for what it does. I would suggest going for the 18-70 Nikon second hand rather than the kit lens, better IQ. Or one of the Tamron 2.8 (17-50 or 28-75).

Have a look at the Nissin flashes, they are a LOT cheaper than the Nikon flash guns and will do the job for you. They sell for around £100

I'm sure there is much debate to be had on the issue, but I've used cheapo uv filters on all my lenses for the last 8-9 years and at my amateur level never noticed a significant difference in IQ.
The ONLY lens I've noticed it on is my 10 year old Tamron 80-210 F2.8 in direct sunlight!

Personally I will be sticking with them given all my photography tends to be outside in muddy & rocky places!! :thumbs:
 
I went from a cheap Fuji bridge to a d60 to a d90 I wish I had just gone to the d90 at the time. Love the camera. I mainly use a 50mm for indoor shots. I also got a jessops ad360 of the bay for the amount I use it, it serves me well.
I still have the kit lenses I got with my d60 but I'm looking to sell them to get a 18-105 or similar.

You won't regret getting one imo

I'll second that, I use a Nissin Di622 which I got for £100 and it does the job. I have seen the Nikon SB600 though for about £150, although I can't remember if that was second hand or new. The newer Nissins give you almost as much spec as the Nikons although they are also about £150. I'd be careful about buying a used flashgun as it's not possible to know how much use it's had.
 
I popped into Jessops today to go and see the D90 but the girl in the shop was telling me about another offer they had on, which was cheaper so I kind felt she must be being honest but basically, the D90 is £679 but they are doing the D5000 18-55 AND 55-200mm VR Twin Lens Kit for £499, this to me sounded like a good deal because the second lens (She sadi) was worth about £200 on it's own and she seemed to think that the D90 can't do loads more than the D90 and would save me £280.....no I am confussed again!!! Any advice appricated. Thanks, Amy
 
Comparing the 2 from here there really doesn't seem much in it, the D90 seems to only have a couple of extra things and the D3000 has the LCD screen....am I missing something perhaps....

You will find the D90 a more substantial body, the in camera motor will be usefull and increase the range of lenses that you would be able to use, 3" compared to 2.7" does not sound much but the difference in screens is substantial. Have you handled both? if you have and really don't feel their is a difference go for the D5000 but I think in time you may regret it.
 
There are lots of AFS lenses available and that D5000 kit has a pair of very good ones. Add a 35mm prime and I think you have most eventualities covered for somebody just starting out. Later on you may want to use lenses that won't autofocus on the D5000, by that time perhaps the D7000 will be reasonably priced though.

The screen on the D90 is very good and I couldn't think why I would want an articulated screen on a DSLR.

I've never used a D5000 but I do appreciate how easy it is to change settings on my D90 compared to the D40 I had before- I'd spend some time in the shop using both to see what suits.

do it, amazing camera. not too sure about the lens, I had a nikon 18-135 which seemed pretty good though
 
I know it's not a comparison, but if the D5000 controls are anything like the D3000 I would go for the D90 without a shadow of doubt. I had a play with a D3000 last night and it was so confusing in comparison to my D90. Using the LED screen to set things up was a real ball ache. Just the top LCD screen on the D90 makes such a difference.

I initially thought that the D5000 would be the camera that I wanted/needed. Now, while I am sure that the D5000 is more than competent, the D90 swung it for me due to several reasons.

It has a better rear screen. It has direct access to most controls & functions. It has the in built AF motor. A bigger & more substantive body. Plus several other bits and bobs - it is a camera that you can "grow into". Compare the two side by side and the D5000 has a distinctly Fisher Price look to it (IMO)


The 18-105 kit lens is a better quality than either the 18-55 or 55-200 supplied with the D5000.

I certainly think that the extra money I spent on the D90 was worth it.

Definitely go for the D90 - the built in motor is great. I upgraded from a D40x after 10 months because of it. Two years on I'm still very happy.

There's only one lens 50mm f1.8 which you will miss with not having built in motor. 35mm f1.8 can do a better job!!

I am going to get my camera tonight :-)

I just wanted to see if anyone has any memory card advice. Every shop tries to sell you a different make. Has anyone used Integral or Panasonic? They seem to be abit cheaper than the Sandisk ones, I assume there must be a reason for this....
 
I've always used sandisk because they have an excellent reliability record (except the fake ones on ebay!) and the cost isn't too horrendous when you buy from somewhere like play.com or Amazon.
However in my cheapo compact I've just got a cheap make and never had a problem with it, but I wouldn't be as gutted to loose photos from that!

As said, you should be able to negotiate a freebe which would do you fine!
 
I would also suggest Sandisk as a reliable make. Some of my older cards of other makes have started to fall apart and I had one corrupt (thankfully I managed to rescue the images). I now only buy Sandisk (in the higher speeds) and have not been let down.

Which camera r u going for finally?
 
I use Transcend 8Gb Class 10 cards - never had a problem and not had any problems with buffer lag in high speed shooting.


BTW - if anyone is looking for a medium range zoom lens I can highly recommend the Nikon 70-300 VR lens. I bought one at the weekend and it is awesome :thumbs:

It wasn't you that out-bid me for one on Ebay was it? :'( I'm eagerly awaiting the delivery of mine now as well.
 
I got my D90 :-) so pleased!! Got it from Currys in the end, I managed to talk the Manager into giving me a discount, I got 7% off which brought it down to £650 !! I am just going to order my memory card, filters and bag online as it does work out cheaper. I am very happy indeed!!:thumbs:
