Nikon is set to add another £80 to the price of its flagship consumer digital SLR, the D90, blaming exchange rate fluctuations.

From next month the D90 will cost £849.99, body only.

The 10% rise means that the price of the 12.3MP DX-format DSLR has risen by around £150 since its debut in September last year. That equates to an overall increase of 21%.

A Nikon spokeswoman said: 'As a result of volatile exchange rate conditions the RRP of the D90 will be increased from 1 May 2009.'

She pointed out that the D90 escaped the last round of price rises in March.

...and that rules the D90 out for me.

Sure, it is a GOOD camera, very good, but at that price it's just not a sensible purchase for someone who doesn't value the movie mode (i'm a photographer, not a cameraphone-equipped chav) or live view.

Shame, but I think the D90's sales figures will suffer as a result of further rises. It certainly makes going used more sense.

Cheers,
James

Sorry to play devils advocate James...have you used one?

I owned one before my D700 and it is a fantastic camera in every way, vastly improving on the D80 IMHO (remember this was one of Nikons best selling D-SLR's). I never used the movie mode once...I do blame Nikon's marketing team for this stigma attached to the D90 - although it was clearly the D90's USP against the competition.

At the end of the day the pictures it produces are fabulous, I have to admit Live View is very nice to have too, really assists getting the focus spot-on.

I have used one, but never owned one.

I'm not saying it's a bad camera, far from it. But what I am saying is that at the current pre-increase price I was umming and aahing purely because it features 'addons' which I'm just not interested in.

Why they can't make a D90 without all that crap, and sell it for the price it SHOULD be, I don't know.

Cheers,
James

D90 still in stock at Argos with 18-105mm VR lens for £744 and in stock for home delivery

Strange as Sterling is recovering against both the Yen and the Euro.

probably bumping up the d90 to make room for the d5000......i paid 709 with lens just before xmas!

also makes it dangerously close to the d300.....

Don't forget that if that gets hit for VAT, import duty and handling fee you can guarantee the price will rise by a significant amount.

A friend of mine did this and purchased a D300 from the states. Import duty was set at a fixed amount, VAT was worked out based on the current UK RRP and a handling charge of £43 + vat was added.

Suddenly it worked out his D300 was £18 more expensive than the cheapest on camerapricebuster AND isn't covered by Nikon UK warranty.

Cheers,
James

Your first post is selling something?

Seems a bit of a 'too good to be true' deal to me.

Would a camera bought from the states have any warranty in the UK?

I was just giving an opinion and sharing what I saw on ebay nothing more nothing less to maybe help any folks who are trying to get a good deal on the D90, I'm not the seller nor a promoter for the company.

I did a bit of research and googled the company in question and the vast majority is positive. They are an ebay powerseller with 99.9% positive feedback. They claim to give a genuine Nikon warranty. It's not for me to sway anyone who is thinking of buying from this company, it's entirely upto them.

Yes this is my first post Dal, but is it such a crime to try and help people save a bit of cash on something which has seen a few price increases since its release?? I thought that was the whole point of forums to help and advise ;)

Also if the company gives a Nikon warranty isn't that a Worldwide one? I bought my D90 kit from Jakarta and checked with the shop I bought it from and it is indeed covered anywhere in the world at a Nikon service centre for 12 months.

Sorry folks if you think I was in anyway trying to promote this company, that was NOT my intention :nono:

Nikon body warrenties are not international - from the horse's mouth.

**WARNING**
Please be wary of dealers claiming to be able to sell or provide you an international warranty for digital equipment when you are purchasing from overseas, or from importers. THIS IS FALSE . International warranty for these products is unavailable.

I'm sure the dealer is legit, but the fact remains that there is no such thing as an International Warranty on Nikon camera bodies.

First of all, :welcome: to TP Shmooler

The Nikon Worldwide Warranty only applies if the purchase is made personally from an official Nikon dealer. However, if you buy a camera over the internet from a dealer in a foreign country then the camera has to be returned to that county for any warranty work.

Therefore it's not really such a bargain after all, I stand corrected and glad I paid over £900 for mine here in Jakarta, at least I know it was from a genuine Nikon dealer with a genuine Nikon warranty ;)

How about the price from Argos of £744 that foggy4ever mentioned? are argos able to offer a genuine Nikon warranty I wonder, somehow I never imagined them to be a Nikon dealer

I purchased a D90 last week from dixons For £738.30 Used the £25 off voucher on site + linked though nector for the points + 1% cash back from my credit card, when you add it all up comes to a shade less then £700. The offers still going but they keep selling out , you have to keep checking the site.
by the way it's a great camera.

Of course they can, in the same way as if you purchase a Nikon from Amazon. :)

Been watching it but it's now disappeared from the site. No D90 for me just yet :'(

It had better not go up before Monday (27th) as that's when I'm buying it!

Well it would make sense with the D5000 being 719 body only and around 799 with a lens (thats at least what Jessops are selling it for)

I used to work for Jessops years ago (when there were really not any what we would now call entry level dslr camers like the D40/50/60/80/90) they only had the D100 and higher spec camers back then, and I never recall seeing any prices increase, like they are now but they did fall over time. Strange how the resection changes things.

I have a 24-120 Nikon VR lens got it for £400 (it was priced at £500 at the time) its now worth £599 I just can't believe it.

Prices constantly going up, guess its going to be second hand for me now.

Hi Guys.

Unfortunately the price increase is true but this time its only on the D90.

We have ordered more stock in the hope that we get some before the price goes up. But if they dont arrive before the end of the month then we get them at the new price.

Talking to Nikon they tell me that as long as the Euro stays around 1.10 then there will be no need for any further price increases. So fingers crossed.

Stuart
