Just joined. Am retired now and like photography. Have purchased a Nikon D90
which came with a 18-55mm DX which obviously works fine.

Was given a AF Nikkor 50mm f1.4 D lens. If I set it to the orange f16 apurture
and lock it on I can take nice sharp pictures no problem, but if I set the camera to a manual focus setting and stop down to anything from f11 to f1.4 I receive an fEE error message. I would like to try some closeup photography with this lens and create what is known as the bokeh effect i.e a sharp close-up image with a smooth blurred background.
I can't achieve this with f16 but if I take it off its orange lock it wont shoot but shows this fEE error message.

Any advise please?

Thanks, buryman

yes for current Nikon bodies, the lens must be locked at its smallest aperture, typically f/22.

You then adjust the f/stop by means of the body's command dial.

If you don't, the lens lets you know by displaying the infamous 'FEE' error
