Nikon D90 kit lens opinions

Hi guys/gals,

Will shortly be upgrading to the D90 from the D60 and was looking for peoples
thoughts on the 18-105mm kit lens.

Is it a good lens or am I better off getting body only and either using my
18-55m and 55-200mm twin kit from the D60 or toying with the idea of the 16-85mm to treat myself.

The other lens I have is the 50mm 1.8.

Any tip and pointers would be welcomed.

i've been impressed with the lens kit so far.
buy with and if you don't like or need sell it on without a loss

tell me more about the tam 17-50 f2.8, as i was thinking of the tam 28-75 f2.8. how does it perform and compare, IQ, focus etc.?

Yeah it's nice. It's my general walk about lens. I thought about the 28-75 but as it's on a crop sensor I didn't think it would be wide enough. It's small, smaller than the 18-105 kit lens (about the same size as the D60s 18-55). IQ is good, focus is fast enough for me although a little noisy. No VR but then you do have 2.8 to play with. I would go for 2.8 over VR every time as I like to have the option of a shallower DoF to play with.

Oh, and it's cheap.
 
very good lens. probably wont save much by just buying the body anyway. pretty good lenght for a kit, vr, pretty fast. thumbs up from me.
 
I'd certainly recommend the AF-S 16-85mm. I know some folks reckon its a bit overpriced but it does have a metal mount and the image quality and construction is very good.

my general pics are of portraits, so even on crop sensor from 50mm is good enough for me.

have you the motorised version, as i know the 28-75 has non and motorised?
 
i like the kit lens, IQ seems ok to me, i have the 1.8 50mm to and cant tell the diff lol pic here from the 18-105

I bought a D90 last week and was upgrading from the D60 as well, first thing you'll notice is how great the 50 is when you can actually af on it!

I bought the body only as I already have the lenses as below in my signature.

The kit lens will be adewuate, I'm now looking for a 70-300mm to replace the 55-200 or a lens similar to the 16-85 once I sell my D60.

If you liked the D60 you'll LOVE the D90!

i'm thinking of the 50mm, do you use yours much and when you do with or without flash.

i've just prefered natural lighting shots and over the years try to avoid the inbuilt flash and not really learnt when and how to use it, which i should. can you explain the fill in flash?
 
still playing with the new d90. i had taken some pics on a memory card and while reading kens guide he mentioned about changing the file names to sequence and so i did. strange thing when viewing pics on computer file explorer view it didn't show the previous pics i took.

I really liked it on my D60 but the manual focus was a pita, now I can af with the D90 it's my favourite lens, more so than the 30mm 1.4.

i've convinced myself to get another tamron 28-75 f2.8 after putting sample pics up in the for sale section (check my link below)
 
Couldn't find the link but found your post, looks like a great lens, I'm sorely tempted to get one!

I use the 50mm now and then, its good for the DOF control but generally the kit lens is used, The pic of my daughter was lifeless without the flash so whilst using Ap priority mode i just turned on the flash and it bought the colours and skin tones to life.
