I am looking to purchase a ???-500mm lens as I really liked some of the shots I saw from a recent airshow taken with a 500mm lens. I was going to get a "BIGMA" Sigma 50-500 but I have read reveiws which have said things like "dissapointed" and "worst lens".

I do like the idea of getting a 500mm lens but the question which one.

I only can streach to prob £500 max. Any advice.

Thanks in advance.

People criticising the sigma zooms are forgetting that they are the cheapest way of getting to this focal length.

They aren't the sharpest lenses in the world, but they're easily acceptable and can produce fine images especially when stopped down a bit.
The fact that they can reach those focal lengths with good image quality, build quality and focus speed for their price is fantastic.

Don't forget with bad user reviews that they might have bad copies of the lens (which aren't as common as some people would have you believe). People who get good copies are much less likely to go and write a review than people seething because their expensive lens has arrived and it's a paper-weight.

I used a bigma at airshows with no problems. As been said, at 500mm they arent super sharp, but try find a 500mm lens under £1000 that is.

The only downside to the bigma is the shear weight of the thing. After a full day shooting a airshow, you'll certainly know about it!

Thanks Guys exactly what I was thinking...... More people complain than rave.

I think what I am trying to say is that is something like the tamron 200-500mm or the sigma 170-500mm 150-500mm better than the 50-500.

I already have a 18-105 Kit lens, 70-300 APO DG Macro f4-5.6, and 50mm F1.8.

Cheers

ken rockwell rates the siggy 150-500 and must admit when i played about with one the only gripe i would have is with the af.....it is a bit sluggish on a d2xs perhaps it may be better on a newer camera optically tho i found it very sharp ideal for wildlife in the highlands ....which is why i was considering it so i didnt try it for anything else....... i see cex in stoke have one for 560 (used) but you do get 12 months warranty with that and if you are not close to stoke most branches will be able to have it transferred in for you

do you need the zoom or will prime do?

You can get a used 300f4 AF + new Kenco pro 300 1.4x for about £500. I love my 300 and I find myself shooting something with it about every day just for fun. On the D90 you'll get to 420 or 510 depending on the TC.

Thanks,
Rick

Have managed to pick up a 170-500 Sigma for a good price. Must say its not the best example but have taken some shots and they look ok. Will bear in mind the suggestions here and keep a look out for those.

Cheers

Where do you look to find a used lens of that spec for that price?

I just picked up mine on here for 375 I think it was. A new pro 300 is another 150 last I looked at Jacobs. Keep in mind I have the AF, not AF-s.

thanks

i love my 50-500mm os, it has fast af and the best os i have seen in a lens, also at 500mm i find it very sharp.
havent really used mine for air shows,
but use it mainly for birds were it produces lots of detail.
heres some samples.
