Nikon d850 "in development"

Life is too short. [emoji4]
Unless you're a camera manufacturer or ultimate fanboy why would you bother?

:D

My point was that the data on that site is a collaborative effort and uses fully transparent methodology which IMO makes more trustworthy than those that are not (eg: dxomark)

Cameras are like willies. Someone always has a bigger one. Just be happy with what you've got and don't want to play with theirs. [emoji16]

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

That's brilliant!

Now I know why people don't like mirrorless. It's not the size, it's how you use it :D

Yeah I get that and wasn't questioning it. For me these things are indicative about what you can expect from a body nothing more.

You can't get a bigger dslr ff camera than a 1dx2/d5 ;)

I have raised a query with Nikon UK regarding the availability of both the MH-26a charger and BL-5 battery cover. This is the response:

'Both the MH-26a charger and BL-5 battery cover have been discontinued on our online store. You may, however, have some luck on the second hand market. For example. Ebay or Amazon.'

So much for buying a D850 and achieving the 9fps!!

That'd be Nikon alright, the type of stupid thing I've come to expect from them.

You can't do it with that set but you'll be able to achieve 9 FPS using the REN-EL15a/EN-EL15 rechargeable Li-ion Battery in the D850 body and the EN-EL18b/EN-EL18a in the MB-D18. Optional BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover required for use of the EN-EL18b/EN-EL18a.

Last two not a concern for me. 1st one already addressed in A9 so maybe a7r3 may be good.

You asked me why I wanted to borrow D850 and last two are of concern to me. :P

A9 costs lot more, doesn't have the type of sensor I want and A7R3 doesn't exist yet. Let's talk about it when it does :D

U can't go wrong with either Sony or nikon. It's canon that's screwed up!

So does Sony and nikon. But u can adapt canon glass to Sony. My 1.2L 85mm was fine on the a7r2 hehe
Yes but with adapted glass you don't get full native AF functionality.

Sony lacks quite a lot of lenses that both canon and Nikon have. They especially lack affordable ones too. Not everyone is going to be able to or have the need to buy GM lenses.

Nikon also lacks many of lenses that canon has and can't be adapted to Nikon.

However, that only works if you're able to charge the EN-EL18b series batteries. How would you plan to do that?

I think the point many are making is the MH-26 charger is now a discontinued product at the UK Nikon store, and there seems to only be some limited stock at some stores and eBay.

To get those extra 2fps how much would the battery grip, battery, charger and battery door all cost? Am I right in thinking the batteries are roughly £169 (park cameras), MH-26 charger £269 (digital rev), battery chamber door £30. Once you add in the cost of grip which I'm guessing will be over £300, the total cost for everything will be nearly £800 if my maths is right (I'm hoping it's not). The D850 looks a great camera but if Nikon have based the selling point of the 9fps on a discontinued charger that's bit of balls up, unless they think D850 buyers who want the 9fps will already have a D5/D4S/D4 and be able to use the charger that came with it.

I don't understand why they get this kind of stuff so badly wrong, you've got what appears to be a great camera and then they go and completely balls up the accessories.

Considering how much we hear about companies like Nikon struggling you'd think they'd bother fix these things, I'm willing to bet the inbuilt wifi stuff is about as well written as a students first A level project.

Have to say that there are some incredible deals on the local (Vancouver, BC) CL for used D810 cameras. Unbelievable - C$1800 for one with 51k clicks, 2100 for one with 110 (one hundred and ten) clicks. A new D850 is C$4300 plus 12% tax. To me it seems a no brainer to pick up a used D810. I wouldn't be using the video functions at all on an 850. About the only thing I'd like is the touch screen but, really, you can do all that with buttons.

Yep. I just picked up a brand new 810 for £2100. Incredible camera. I'm sure I'll get an 850 at some point but right now the 810 is producing stunning images which please me and my clients.

As an aside, If I live to be 1000 years old I'll never understand why people obsess over FPS.

I've run into FPS issues only when photographing sports. The way to get around it is to learn how to time your shot for the action you want to record. But, you know, even if I had a D5 there would be occasions where the FPS would let me down. And really, do I want to go through 24-36 nearly identical frames to find the "perfect" one? Nope.

It's beginning to sound like a balls up as my local camera dealership confirmed you'll need the Nikon D850 Battery Grip, Grip cartridge, D5 charger and D5 battery for the extra 2fps. The resulting cost is about a £900 which is ridiculous!

I doubt the Nikon D5 stuff is discontinued though, if so they are probably releasing revised models to replace the current.

£900 extra on top for the advertised speed of 9 fps..... clever marketing. :D

I'm not 'obsessing' over 9fps. AS I've said I shoot very fast moving action in short bursts of perhaps 3 or 4 frames. I have found by experience that a higher frame rate gives me more 'interesting' and saleable images. I need to have good timing as well but I'm looking for that split second. The higher frame rate allows me to capture images that I would otherwise not get.
If you walked a day in my (professional) shoes I think you'd change your mind. (y)
If the grip didn't give a higher frame rate I would still buy it for the extra battery capacity (again important for me) and the significant improvements in camera handling, particularly for portrait work.

As above I'm sure a revised charger will be coming out, they're not going to leave D5 users in the lurch. As for the cost of it all, the angry photographer made a typically 'amusing' video regarding this a few weeks ago ;)

Edit: Here it is ;) (although he underestimated the total cost )

The Nikon UK online shop hasn't even been set up properly yet to support the D850 Just three things on the moment but I have no doubt the MH-26a / MH-26aAk will appear soon as in Nikon USA site.

The Nikon D850 manual should also be able to be downloaded very shortly if this follows the same path as the D810 / D500.

I've not seen this mentioned yet but forgive me if it has. I've noticed that the D850 has ditched a button off the back and no longer has dedicated AF-ON and AEL buttons but instead just has a dedicated AF-ON button. I personally don't use BBF, and rarely use AEL but I know the D750 was criticised for only having one button on the back (AEL which can be configured to AF-ON). What's people's thoughts on this, mistake by Nikon?

I rarely use AEL.
I think the BBF will be useful to many.
The 750 button is not in the ideal place for BBF.
I find the AF-ON button on the 500 easier to use.

Since the 850 was luanched I have had it in my head to buy one.
But thinking about it, I already have a 500 for wildlife etc.
I am now leaning towards hoping the 750 upgrade is worthwhile and going that way.
I'm just a hobbyist, and a 750 with better AF and a few other add ons might suit me better.

I highlighted this last week as it sent alarm bells ringing in my head. It does dramatically increase the cost of the camera for a whopping 2fps!

Yeah, I think it will mostly only be pros who use it/'need it' and they'll write it off against tax anyway ;)

Just picked up D810 body as well

Lol, have you read these last few messages about the 2fps? You do seem to hate Canon a lot even though you claim not to.
Check the 6d2 thread and possibly even the 5d4 thread. Lots moaning about canon. Nikon and Sony are better lol

I know there is a lot of moaning about Canon, but you seem to think they are the only ones who get things wrong.

Anyway, lets not go there again, I don't want to derail another thread!
