I've looked through the manual but cannot find it anywhere

Is it on all the time bill? Or only certain modes?

Hi Adam

seems to be on all the time ........... I have gone through all the settings to see if it's something that he been switched "on" ......... but the ? mark at the side of the small black rectangle just makes me wonder if it is telling me that there is a fault

If I cannot find out what it is I will reset the camera to factory settings and see if it goes away

Indicating one of the crop modes?

no Roger .... pity that I cannot take an image of it as it is what I see in the VF

the camera seems to be working fine

Memory cards fitted/incompatible ?

If you look into the VF it looks like this
the rectangle beneath the ? is black and the is something very small to the right of it

VF.jpg

the same when switched on or off
the same when i try two lens
the same when I take both memory cards out
changed the battery

Weird one. Not heard of that before. Could it be anything to do with being unable to correctly expose an image? Does it change with exposure modes?

Edited to say, clearly not now that I've seen your last reply.

Press the question mark button on the back

Try another battery.

Try another battery.

just get the "set picture control" which is on Standard

just reset the camera by pressing the "green" dot buttons and it is still there

strange that it only appears in the VF

On the entry level Nikons it's to tell you there's some useful info in the help menu (which you can access by pressing the ? Button) when exposure's not right and depends on the mode you're in. I've never seen it on my D750 though, nor have I heard of it on the D810.

Here a image of the viewfinder icons Bill, this may help to narrow down what it is you seeing?

That is strange because in theory the highlighted picture shows all the options available on the screen so I can't see where the ? symbol is coming from unless it an error message or something for diagnostics by Nikon?

I cannot find it at all in the D810 Manual or by searching the web

(the black rectangle is half the size of my illustration) .... just reposted the above image to show true size of black rectangle

I have the usual info a the bottom of the VF

No it very weird as I had a google about as am sure you have and can't find any mention of a ? symbol anywhere? I am intrigued now what it can be but it certainly not something can find any info on at the moment?

It is odd as you'd think any possible display would be in the manual, if only in the troubleshooting section. There's no mention of it here either by I can only assume it's a fault. I'm intrigued to know what it is and why Nikon thought it wise to omit it from the manual.

I bought it from Harrison in Sheffield, must still be under warranty - I'll email Nikon and ask

will post more info when I have it

but, as i said the camera seems to be working OK

Be good to find out it certainly not mentioned anywhere else? Harrison cameras my go to shop as well, that the good thing about buying from a UK shop even if a little more ££ at least if something goes wrong you got somewhere take it? I had a Sony A99 many moons ago and it developed a fault and they just let me carry on using it till they got me a replacement so I wasn't without a camera :-)

Harrison's is my 'local' too and always been happy with them.

It's not a crafty hair or fibre (impersonating a '?') within the viewfinder/mirror area itself is it?

Must admit, the thought had crossed my mind also. Check your focusing screen Bill. Give it a good blow with a rocket blower.

good blow with a Rocket brush and it's gone

as you both said ........ but I still could not understand the small black rectangle unless there was also a little dirt

Thank god that mystery solved lol

I couldn't understand how it could show something else when the pic shows every possible icon, can sleep better tonight now :-)

of course it makes you feel like an idiot ... but I have got used to that at my age

I just now need to find out where I blew the hair to!!!!!

A hair impersonating a question mark, brilliant :ROFLMAO:

I had this once. All of a sudden there was a load of crap in my VF. I thought it was gonna be a send it off job but noticed there was something on my focusing screen so gave it a blast and all was good. If I do this I tend to hold the camera face down so anything that is dislodged falls out rather than on to the mirror.

Glad you've got it sorted mate.
