Nikon D800......

3 posts on the same thing, guess I should go check it out, lol

Looks to be a much more detailed update than last time. Something there for video users, and off-cam flash users too.

Installed the latest firmware.

The new one-hand ISO changing feature of the latest firmware is just amazing. Finally there is a reason for that small red button if you don't do video. And we don't have to be jealous of the Canon ISO button.

This is a single biggest improvement on any Nikon firmware I remember long time ago.

Been a load for sale on the forum recently, wonder why people are passing them on?

mine was up for sale but have decided to keep it. The reason i wanted to offload it was the bulk of it all and i shoot 90% film now so its barely out of the bag. I was tempted by the sony a7r since it had the same sensor but other things put me off so i decided to keep hold of it all for now. I'll wait for the next gen of FF mirrorless to see what happens with them.

I reviewed the update features on the Nikon site and wasn't going to bother with it until I read this. Now updated - really like this feature. Now if only they could add a long exposure timer to the LCD display à la Canon....

There's another thread on this, which I responded to.. but I feel it's worth repeating what I typed in here.

----

"When the built-in flash was set to Commander mode, remote Speedlights sometimes did not fire. This issue has been resolved."

Thank **** for that!... it was starting to irritate me, and I was starting to think my SB800s were dodgy!

"In some rare cases, the memory card access lamp remained lit for longer than usual, and some time was required before any operations could be performed. This issue has been resolved."

...and that!

D800/E update - change to AF-ON function:-
"When AF-ON only was selected for Custom Setting a4 (AF activation) and the AF-ON button was pressed to initiate autofocus during viewfinder photography, focus remained locked even after the user took their finger off the button, and the shutter could be released at any time. However, specifications have been modified so that the shutter cannot be released under the following conditions if the camera fails to focus.
- Autofocus mode is set to AF-S (single-servo AF)
- AF-area mode is set to Single-point AF
- Custom Setting a2 (AF-S priority selection) is set to Focus
"

Not quite sure why Nikon has made that change. I use the above settings and prior to the update if I wanted to recompose after focussing with the AF-ON button I would take my finger off it, recompose then release the shutter. Now, if I do that the shutter will not release. Therefore, I now need to focus with AF-ON AND keep that button depressed when recomposing and releasing the shutter. No big deal, but what advantage has been achieved by the change is not apparent (to me).

Because it is consistent with how it worked before D800.

Also, it makes sense. Now it works as expected. I think it is correct that the camera requires image to be in focus if I am in AF-S mode and priority is set to focus. No matter if I use AF-ON only or not.

Previously the camera was always in release mode as soon as you turned AF-ON which doesn't make any sense.

If you get used to the pre-update behaviour and want to recompose in AF-S mode, you can switch AF-S priority mode to release.

Yes, that is a handy improvement.

BTW (I stand to be corrected here), but I think that if you opt not to take a firmware update and the next update comes along and you want that one you may need to instal the update you missed first. If anyone knows that to be wrong, please say.

Why not just change a2 to 'Release'?

(Ditto for a1).

Edit: Doh, just realised the same thing is suggested in post 4616.

Same! My SB900, I thought, was on it's last legs because it misfires so much when used remotely.

Also, how do you set the one touch ISO? I've not updated yet as all my cards are full atm. Will offload the images later and format one to do the job.

As for the new one hand ISO setting.

You can customise movie record button to do (together with main dial):
- ISO
- Image area setting
- exposure locking

I like it too - it's a great tweak.

Trouble is, I can't remember what the new f13 default was before I changed it. Was it NONE?

Cheers, will probably set it to ISO as I very rarely use the video function.

What are the menu buttons to achieve this please

HI
Sorry I meant to enable the video button as ISO change.
Thanks
JohnyT

I know - that's what post 4624 above does.

If you've got the new firmware (A1.10/B1.10) menu f13 is now called 'Assign Movie Record Button' - change it to ISO (this only affects stills mode).

NB.
  • f13 was 'Assign MB-D12 AF-ON' in all previous firmwares.
  • In the new firmware, 'Assign MB-D12 AF-ON' is now f14 and 'Assign Remote Fn Button' is f15.
  • f14 and f15 didn't exist before - they only appear in A1.10/B1.10.

I have a quick question for the long-timers that I've been meaning to ask for a while...

On my old 5DMKIII I had the ability to use 'exposure simulation' in live view. Does the D800 have a similar feature? (I couldn't find it if there is).

Thanks,
Si

Yip - that's the answer for me (as also suggested my Mirek) (y)

Thanks for the suggestions on backpacks guys but I'm really pretty narrow on my requirements..

Smallish backpack - just needs to fit D800 + 16-35 attached + room for spare lens, area for personal gear (waterproof coat, snacks etc)

I already have a modified Lowe Alpine 50ltr backpack for when hiking, the new one is purely a compact travel backpack for holidays

I used to have a Kata 465i backpack that was really good - separate section on top for personal gear with a padded section on the bottom - I used to carry around a gripped Pentax K20D, and about 4 lenses in the bag.
I never had the D800 & 16-35 at the time but I have a similarly sized bag now which easily fits those and a spare lens/battery.
Bag was really good quality - also comes with a good rain cover - quite cheap too (for a camera bag!) about £60 odd I might buy another actually.

All moving to the Fuji X series :)

I keep toying with the idea initally to move to the Fuji X Series but I tried an XT-1 and didn't really like it.
I'm now considering downsizing back to a D610 (had the D600 before) - 24MP was plenty however I think I'd miss the AF on the D800 along with the tank like build and some of the other control aspects - looking at cost I'm unlikely to make much by selling the D800 and going down to the D610 so I'll likely just keep it.

I had the X100s for a while, just couldn't get with it. I didn't like the feel/grip of it. |SO I can't see me trying out any of the more advanced offerings, as they're all pretty much similar styled. WOn't be ditching the D800 for any trends any time soon. I think those that are, may regret it in the long run.

I'm running with both setups, the Nikon gear is used for professional (and personal) assignments and the fuji is used as a day-to-day setup, really enjoying the fuji x pro1 and a set of primes but can't imagine parting with my main kit just yet
