Nikon D800......

Whats your take on the D800 AF Ade, seeing as you just replaced it with a D3S
The autofocus on the D3s is much better Gary. In my experience.

I still have the D800 and it is, without a doubt, a superb camera, capable of incredible detail and allows you to crop quite heavily. For birds in flight, as an example, it tends to struggle a bit, the D3s excels in this area of photography that I do. The D3s is a lot better in crap light as well.

I`m off to the outer hebrides soon, the 500 will live on the D3s for a week or so I would imagine.

Anyone replaced the focus screen on their D800 with a third party one for more accurate manual focusing?

Nope. If I've got time to focus manually, I've got time to use a zoomed in Live View, and that's far more accurate.

That's fine for tripod work, but for on the fly manual focus live view is useless to me plus the Nikon live view is a dog's dinner and battery emptier. The screen replacement is the next on the to do list and maybe a Zacuto Z finder for tripod work on sunny days.

Hand held I tend to just use the focus confirmation. It's rare I manually focus hand held though.

It depends what kind of work you do. If it's landscape, then you'd be on a tripod any way no doubt. Same with still life, product etc. Outside of those occasions I'd probably not use a manual focus lens. I've certainly never considered a 3rd party screen. The fact that al the ones I've seen require testing accuracy, and installing shims and pads to correct errors in focusing kind of put me off. Used to swap out screens on my F5 all the time and they didn't require adjustments and shims putting in place. Nikon had designed it to be changed. You just took the prism off, swapped screen.. put the prism back. It took 30 seconds. If they implement that again I'd be tempted, otherwise no.

Just upgraded my Nikon D300S to a D800.

Wow. What a difference. Can anyone recommend any decent full frame lenses for me to take to New York?
I know the 12-24 and 24-70 2.8 are what I WILL be getting, but cash is a bit tight at the mo so looking for something a bit cheaper.
I've got a Sigma 10-20 and a Nikon 18-70 which the D800 will take and automatically change to DX mode, but would like to utilise the full FX sensor.

Also can anyone recommend what specs I should be looking at for a laptop?
36 megapixel files are killing current lappy. :D

Cheers Lee

Depends on how much money you have, but a 35/50mm would be a good cheap first purchase to start getting all of those pixels recorded imho.

get a 2nd hand 28-70 F2.8 & your covered for all those lengths - £5-600

Will have a look now, but think new camera, laptop and New York will cost a bit too much. :(

Cheap temporary (or not) option could be the Nikon 35-70 f2.8, excellent IQ and performs well on the D800.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 without the built in Motor, distinguished by having the aperture ring

Just wondering, does anyone use the 16-35 as their main lens? ie for walkabout..... just sold my Sigma 35mm and I have been looking at a 24-70 (Tamron) for more flexibility but I tend to use the 24-35 range (and sometimes wider) but was a little concerned that I might find the f4 limiting v the f2.8 on the Tamron for general use.

Depends on what you intend to use it for mostly I'd say. If mostly outdoor, then the f4 probably won't hinder you much, if at all. Never used either, but I'd probably choose the Tamron. It's not going to be built anywhere as nice and solid as the 16-35, but it's more flexible. I don't tend to ever shoot wider than 35 on FX though. I have the Sigma 35 and I see me holding onto it for a long time to come.

LOL, its actually better built IMO, the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR is one of Nikons newer breed of pro lenses which actually uses a lot of plastic, good plastic, but plastic all the same.

Does no-one actually shoot with these?

It's just not really a photo thread is why. Post them up in the landscape - Rural & Scenic forum.

I nearly went for the 16-35 but for general use a 24-70 is more useful. You could get a nikkor 24-70 off the classifieds on here. I rate mine highly

I don't disagree that the Tamron is likely to be the more flexible of the two - I've currently got a Nikon 24mm f2.8D and find that for landscapes its often not wide enough - a 16-35 was excellent on a recent trip to Skye.

I've handled both and don't think theres a massive difference in build between them - not in feel anyway the 16-35 is lovely though.

I wouldn't mind a Nikkor 24-70 but any used ones I've seen seem to be very pricey (£800+) - I could get a brand new Tamron 24-70 for that! Need to ponder I really "want" both!

All I know is, any review for the Tamron I've read, they moan about the build quality. Everything else sounds great for the money though.

Chris, 24-70 Nikkor and Ziess 21mm. One cracking set up for Nikon 35mm format.

I have considered the Zeiss (based solely on your pics) but it's a bit dear for me!

Contemplating the 16-35 with a 24 mm f1.8G and 85mm f1.8G to cover off the 24-70 range (and more) and give me some speed!

My subject matter doesn't need speed per se, but it sure is nice to have, an 85F1.8 is on my list too for portraits and other close ups.

I reckon, bar a 24mm TSE, an 85F1.8 (I don't do portraits-much) and a 70-200 F4 would be fine I have the best glass possible. The Nikkor 24-70 edge to edge sharpness is great

Its just such a good lens and versitile too its rude not to have it.

Anyone recommend me a backpack for the D800 with 16-35 attached and 1 spare lens... purely for travel/holidays, nothing too bulky and ideally one with storage for some personal gear?

Thanks

Simon

Look at the Lowepro range. There's bound to be something there for you. Can't be beaten for quality so far as I'm concerned.

Well I just purchased another 16-35 and very happy with it - just need to decide the rest of my lineup.
Ordered a 28mm f1.8G for Amazon - damaged box but brand new - good discount on new - not totally sure about it - looking at the damage to the box I can't believe that the lens is fine and not 100% on quality based on shots I've taken - maybe expecting too much v the Sigma 35mm I had before.

Probably looking at Nikon 85mm f1.8 for length (or maybe the Sigma 150mm f2.8) - might also consider the Nikon 70-300 VR

I actually use a Berghaus Terrabyte 30 bag - not a camera bag but I use some padding in it - good space for a D800 with a lens attached and another lens - lot of space for personal gear too.

I use a Kata minibee 110. really nice bag, small and neat, and fits more than it would seem. I can fit my D800 with 300 f4 attached, with a 35 and 85 lens plus a flash. There's a section for small notebooks/ipad, and one for batteries and cards, and a pocket that fits my RS-sport strap. It's probably the nicest bag I've owned, and I've had a fair few along the way. I have a larger, roller bag that fits more, but that little Kata holds enough for most outings.

In relation to the 28mm the Sigma must be a beast as the 28mm 1.8 is the best lens I have used on my D800 so far. Maybe it is a bad copy? I already wanted a Sigma 35mm so reading that is not making it easy for me.

As an aside is there any sort of L plate that can be used without a ballhead? I so want one but don't know what I should be looking for.

Has anyone done away with their shutter release cable, espcially when in MUP with exposure delay set 3secs, does it work ok ? any shutter speeds fellow TP users have had issues with ? I mainly shoot Landscapes.

I have a lowepro flipside sport 15L which can hold that in the camera compartment with room for one small lens or a speed light , there's also a top compartment which has enough room for a few things and a front pouch for an iPad or books etc. there's 2 side meshes that can be used to carry bottles of water

I use this bag all the time and my last outing I took d800 with 24-120 attached, cp filter, rocket blower, 1.4 extender in camera compartment

Then in the top compartment I took a 70-200 2.8 , 2 spare inner tubes in boxes , mini pump, tyre levers , wallet, emergency toolkit, sunglasses

It all squeezed in just nicely

Hi Simon I have gone with a lowepro 55Aw perfect body + 24-70, pouch on front for filters too, and a large backpack for the kitchen sink, tent, warm kit, cooking/gas cooker etc etc, great when out on the hills of Snowdonia.

I suspect your probably right - as I said it was sold discounted due to a "damaged box" I have my suspicion that the impact that damaged the box has done something to the lens.

Will have a look round but might just try and source another - oh and the Sigma 35mm is incredible you wouldn't regret buying one.

Thanks for letting me know. I think I may have to pick one up soonish.

I'll probably end up buying another Sigma 35mm at some point - had some of my favourite images with this lens (bought it twice) - I think I'll return the example of the 28mm I've been sent - I might just try and see how I get on with my Nikon 24mm f2.8D for now actually - it won't match the Sigma but I've had some cracking images from it in the past.

Firmware update just released: D800 Firmware Update A 1.10, B 1.10

I use the timer function and mirror up all the time for landscapes, never have a problem.
