Nikon D800......

Yep open and used, what a difference to the duff D7100 I had!
Brilliant resolution, I think I'm going to like it :D

Only one issue so far, it won't recognise my Delkin Devices CF Cards ... about to do the firmware update, don't know if this will resolve that or whether there is a compatibility issue with the cards (16GB UDMA 6 450x).

Tip gramps, never judge your image by the back screen. Sometimes they don't look sharp but on your monitor they are. Agreed the resolution is crazy. Will test your technique to the limit for sure

Wait till you experience the level of adjustments you can make in LR with regards to the dynamic range, its even more impressive imo than the cropability.

Looking forward to being tested Tony ... hoping to get out tomorrow for the day but people keep wanting work done!

Done the firmware update but it won't deal with my DD CF cards ... anyone had problems with CF card recognition?

Have to search amongst the bags and see if I can find any other makes to try.

Best cards by far are the Sandisk ones. You can pick up the ultra fast ones 16GB for peanuts now on amazon

Found 3 x Duracell cards and it's happy with them, just not the DD's

Must. Not. Break Wind.

Must. Not. Break. Wind.

Hard b**tard to control, this GAS!

Had a play with a mate's D800 yesterday evening with a couple of my lenses fitted and they seem to perform well with it. The one I was a little worried about is a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM which tends to stay at home due to its weight (in favour of a Nikkor 70-300 VR) but even wide open at the long end, the corners look fine to me so a heavyish crop of the middle should be fine. I'll be wanting to use it fairly wide open so I can use a pol - I'll be shooting through glass. Didn't have a very extended play, just enough to get a few snaps to judge the edge/corner sharpness of that lens and the weight of the camera. Feels very similar to my D700 so I can see a big fart D800 in the bag at some not-too-distant point! Just need to get one ordered up...

Could have tested the camera's video capabilities at the cinema you know :D

Ha, would do a better job than some of the dodgy copies of movies I've seen lately!

I brushed her off tonight anyway and took some shots of the kids. After using the Rx100 the past few weeks for casuals, I got a little touch of the "Wow, kind of forgot just how bloody great this thing really is!" :)

I had the sigma 85 1.4 on it all day and the results have blew me away. Even at 1.4 it's remarkably sharp on the D800, splitting hairs between it and the 35 for sharpness.

The bokeh is really in a league of its own. I have pretty much used a 70-200 for my portraits this past year. The look this lens gives combined the with D800 is something else

I used the 24-120 f4 which I like but isn't anything like as sharp as the Sigma 85 1.4 but I do find it a great walkabout lens so I use it a lot.
I'm quite pleased with my initial efforts - my hands are not as vice-like as they used to be so starting with an f4 lens probably doesn't help but once I get the Kirk 'L' bracket I'll be using my monopod a lot of the time.

I have been looking at some monopods, want one for video and also for using the 85. I would love to see an 85 1.4 with a stabiliser!

Very interested to hear your D3s/D800 comparisons Gramps. My photography has changed and I no longer need such a fast fps rate or high iso capability, consequently the D800/E has been on my radar for a while. My reservations are that technique is of uber importance and as such means it may not be for me...I know my place!

The one big difference for me is the way the D3S feels in my hands, the D800 doesn't match it and I am sure affects my results with it. The resolution of the D800 sort of counters the effect of it in my hands but I need to work on holding technique ... or stick with the monopod.

Get the vertical grip for it!

Tempted but then would worry about it hanging on the Q-strap.
I like the Kirk 'L' bracket with the monopod but grip would need a 2nd bracket - may try one of the Meike ones and get an Optech Sling just to put my mind at ease.
So little time, so many decisions :D

I use the meike, it's spot on. Vertical grips are probably the single biggest rip off in the camera industry! £45 on eBay and you're good to go!

Yes, what is it ... nearly £300 for an original

I went from a d700 to d800, some reviewers say you need to be extra careful because of the 36MP, IMO that's rubbish, it's just as easy to shoot with handheld.

Did you ever use a D3/3S?
There's a real difference if you are used to that size/weight body.

Technique is of more importance when you go up in terms of megapixel. Flaws all around are way more apparent, from quality of optics to how good your lenses AF is and how steady your hand is. It is physics twist.

Perhaps but not so much IME, I'm not shooting at double shutter to FL like most recommend, more like 1:1 and not having any issues. Pretty sure most people using a d800 aren't using kit lenses.

I've just bought a Pixel Vertax grip. It's indistinguishable from the Nikon one, and fits perfectly.. no gaps like some of the other chinese grips. Dials feel nice.. shutter release feels nice.. slightly less precise than the camera's, but doesn't feel cheap. The clicks of the dial are a bit louder than the camera's.. that's all.

I'll post some pics up later when I charge my little compact. The D600 is at work, and the only other cameras I have here are film cameras.

No but used canon 1d's, not my idea of fun tbh, but I'm guessing more weight = better stability.

Where did you get it from please?

36mp shows the flaws of even higher end lenses.

Just because its expensive doesn't mean they're flawless. I don't even know why I'm explaining this to you just like when I had to tell you your pictures where sharp via pm.

My wife bought it for me as a present, so can't say for certain... it was just off Ebay though.

[edit]

Just checked with my wife... she got it from a Ebay seller called cam2_uk. Shipped from UK.. Postage inc. just over £60.

Indeed. It shows up the flaws in the 24-70 f2.8 and that's an awesome lens!

I'm sure you understand when buying new kit it's best to check with people who own the gear already wether all seems in order or things look odd just for piece of mind. I don't waste money to find out later I need to send things to Nikon 'repair' center.

That's it... was £63 when she bought it though :(

Pics!
