• The fixing procedure for Nikon is a tedious one. It includes writing individual calibration values into the firmware. For larger deviations, the AF module will first mechanically be re-aligned. This may actually include the AF auxiliary mirror in some cases.

I think the problem is that manufacturers of all new technology like to use the consumer as a test case, this is unacceptable but nothing will change and we will still buy their products. The refurb idea in my opinion is a good one, they dont seem to think so, probably because the profit margins arent very high to begin with in order to gain market dominance, look at the price of a 5D3. The D800 is cheap for what it is, I dont think they could afford a 10-15% hit on selling a refurbed camera or the hassle and costs of creating such a scheme.

I have the same bitter taste with a few other manufacturers and tend to hold off buying early releases but sometimes it has to be done.

Has anyone tried a multi-exposure HDR process with the D800?
 
What size were you dealing with 1/2 Gig?

I'm not exactly sure to be honest with you. I processed them on the iMac when I had them and didn't even think to look as it handled D800 files so easily, even large batch processes.

Now I'm back to a windows based machine ill probably keep an eye on performance / files sizes etc.

I know the individual Raws weighed in at around 40 odd meg each lossless compressed

Right so thought Id post my AF results but with an option of recomposing left AF point to center of frame to allow for any lens edge softness. 100% crops (screen grab quality).

1) SELECT side is CENTER point, center frame. CANDIDATE is LEFT EXTREME point, but recomposed to center of frame.



2) Hopefully to clear up any confusion or doubt for some when their cameras seem slightly out is...

1) SELECT side is CENTER point, center frame. CANDIDATE is LEFT EXTREME point, LEFT EDGE of frame (most lens weakness).

I have just purchased a D800 and am having a problem with my Yongnuo 565EX flash gun.
When I use the flash as a slave & in commander mode it works perfectly, however when I attach the flash to the camera the flash flashes continually for probably a second or more and I cannot find a way to stop this.

This flash worked perfectly okay when it was attached to the D700 I had.

Help would be appreciated.

I had the exact same problem, the camera is selecting the flash to use red eye reduction and fires a series of pre flashes.

Thanks for posting these, looks about the kind of difference I'm seeing on mine. Will do some proper testing at the weekend but looking like I've got an OK one :)

No problem, glad they helped someone. Thought that may be the case for some here and probably a lot of people elsewhere, its just a case of a lens not being as sharp at the edges rather than the center of frame, wonder if this is what pmac is experiencing as his is also only a subtle difference.

mine was more out of foxus than that.just not as bad as the other sample posted. it was also failing to lock focus when racked. 3out of 5 times...so maby it was actualy as bad.

if there hadnt been an issue im sure nikon would have just returned the camera instaed of spending the time to try and fix it.
 
Need a spare battery for my new baby. I see that Amazon is selling one for £35.99. There's at least one buyer on there shouting fake, but largely positive reviews... Elsewhere on the site the battery is listed by another third party seller at £46.99, but in this case you can order direct from Amazon for £51.48...

Where have folk been buying their spare batteries from? Any recommendations?

Yes - beware of puting el cheapo batteries in that very expensive camera you have. A leaking battery can do a lot of damage and Nikon will not want to know if the battery was not one of theirs.

Nikon do not make batteries. They make cameras and lenses.

I know, but there are batteries manufactured under contract for Nikon, and to a Nikon specification, and which carry the Nikon name. Nikon accept responsibilities for these products. (As indeed they do for parts of Nikon cameras that are not made by Nikon -Sony sensors, for example).
There are batteries that are branded as being Nikon (and look exactly the same), but are not accredited Nikon products. Nikon will not accept responsibility for those or damage to any camera resulting from a malfunction of such batteries.
 
So, anybody actually taking pictures with a D800? Or is everybody just calibrating focus and arguing about batteries.....?

I'm quite happily using a couple to shoot weddings/boudoir/anything else that takes my fancy. Batteries seem fine, not had to change one on a days shooting yet. ;)

Yup, just not been uploading much. Over the last few weeks I've shot a few gigs, a lot of macro and the usual shots of the kids and cat that nobody wants to see but the family.

I've not had any issues with my D800. Thankfully. But I've not been using it maybe as much as I should.

Interesting, I would welcome your view ... if you had to give up either your D3 or your D800, which would it be?
 
The D800 is my studio camera, where I pretty much use it every day, Gramps. Now I love my D3. Its so easy and comfortable to use. The only thing I'd change on the D800 is the way it feels in my hand. When I first picked it up, it felt awkward. Like my bottom 3 fingers were being pushed down.

If I could, I'd put the insides of my D800 in the D3. But I cant :( :lol:

The D800 is wonderful though, the detail it produces, the dynamic range, its AF. Its superb IMO.

Oh and its killing my laptop! :lol: I need a new machine! :(

Those thoughts are basically what holds me back ... maybe Nikon's next will fit the bill :lol:

I might be going against the grain but I prefer the ergonomics better than my D700. It feels more compact, hard to explain. When the grip is on it I find it handles even better

D4 would be perfect! I just don't have D4 money! :(

The D800's results speak for themselves though. Glad I bought mine! :D

It's a personal thing I think. When you've used a D3 just about every day, holding a D800 just doesn't feel 'right' IMO. I don't like camera's that don't have built in grips with a add-on grip. They don't feel right to me either. :(

I'm no pro but definitely enjoying using it!! I'll find time to argue about calibration and batteries later :naughty:


Its a great tool that lets me take some pictures which I enjoy!

I love that I'm not afraid to use it at 6400 for jobs, like I used to fear even ISO 1000 with the D90
