Nikon D800......

love those macro shots :)

For a cheap flash option i got the Marumi drf14n which works well. Ive seen some ingenious DIY setups though with the SB's

Looked at those ring flashes before, more expensive than a cheap yongnuo unit - but it's ready to go. My softbox [designed to get the flash over the lens, prevent shadows, esp if you use ext tubes + lens] is basically a small amazon box taped up, kitchen foil lined, and a baby wipe as the front diffuser held on with some of the kid's hair bobbins :D I'm not even kidding! There's a pic of it somewhere way down my FB page

[edit] Found it:

Well wonders will never cease, I just got my NPU card through the post. Took just under a year! So don't give up hope if you're waiting.

They must have sent out a batch. Mine came this morning too !

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have had my D800 for a few weeks now and I am wondering what I have to about warranty. Do you have to register it or something?

Thats great thanks, just got off the phone having registered the Body and two lenses. They were very helpful :)

It's about 5 months here now, no sign. Not in any hurry or anything, but I just like to have these things.

OK SB-600 flash question

How do i stop the d800/sb-600 sending out 3 pre flashes when i press the shutter, im a total flash novice so be gentle, doesn't happen with my DS3 and SB-600

Daft question, have you got red eye set on the camera

Could have been the modelling flash acting up? I'm not well up on flash either, but so far no issues firing both Sb900 + Yongnuo 560 at once, using the pop up/CLS to trigger.

isnt it supposed to do that in order to get ttl information to set its main flash strength or something?

yeah, just spent a whole minute googling the issue and found out all about it. Worth knowing.

It's dead easy really. Go to the flash settings in the menu, find 'flash cntrl for built in flash' - set to commander mode and set the built in flash to "--" this way it willfire, but have no effect on the scene when shooting. Now stick your sb800 into remote mode and away you go. Obviously you need to still pop your on board flash up.

Otherwise you could try cheap wireless triggers. I bought a cheap PT-04 set from amazon a few years back and they still work fine, think they were about £30. You get a trigger + 2 receiver units. But, no need really with CLS for free.

I'm sure this has been asked, but hey....

Are the sandisk 16gb sdhc extreme 45mbs class 10 cards gonna he fine? Or is it stupid not to get the pro 90mbs version. I'm a. 1 photo at a time kinda person so speed not an issue with regards buffer, but might look at the odd video ?

Does it change the transfer speed from card to comp too? And if so is it really twice as fast as the numbers kinda suggest?
Cheers!

Cool

I guess that's why the 16gb pro are out of stock at mymemory :bang:

Even with the d800, don't think going bigger than 16 makes any sense, will go shop around for. 1 or 2!

I think you are right, 16gb for me was the biggest - just to remove potential points of failure (although I've never had a Sandisk fail so not sure of my logic is good) :)

Haha me too, but Sod's law and all that!

Looks like currys it is at £28, since when did currys get so competitive price wise on things like memory cards?

I can never get this idea that smaller cards are better ... But I use 2 x 32GB and 2 x 16GB just in case I need more.

And the 95mb/s ones are most definitely smoother/faster running.

I just think its a personal thing. Sometimes, places I shoot need frequent moving of cards so one card per shoot works good for me, personal pref is all ;)

The definitive D800 card test is here....

I use a 32GB Sandisk 45MB/s SD cards and 32GB Sandisk 60MB/s CF Cards, and both work great. Obviously if you use both slots like I do, the camera's speed is dictated by the slowest card.

No need for 90MB/s.. just overkill unless you shoot on continuous all the time for sports... in which case you've bought the wrong camera, because the D800 is really sloooow on continuous.

Of course, if it gives you peace of mind an' all, but I wouldn't worry too much on good cards failing. A 4GB could fail just as easy as a 32 anyhow.

David, I find the faster cards so much better, regardless if they use their potential speed or not. On my slower 45mb/s card just scrolling through previews can be sluggish, not so with the faster card. Not sure how that works, but it just does.

No sluggishness here with the sandisk 45mb/s SD Card.... and obviously not with the CF version at 60MB/s.

90MB/s is just not needed :)

At continuous write speed, not burst the 95mb/s maxes out at 26 shots - how does the 45mb/s compare (I did not have one to test)?

I do wonder is it my camera? It's doing this since I bought it, mind you, it's the only annoying issues it has. And it does seem to be only with the slower cards. They're different makes too, I have Sandisk & Samsung - and both will tnd to pause when 'chimping' back through images right after a shot. The faster card [also Sandisk] doesn't do this?

Going to get a couple of CF cards soon, see if it still happens.

I sought the advice of a good friend, who is also a member of the Sandisk Extreme Team.

After that I went for the 45mb/sec SD cards, twinned up with an equivalent, or faster CF card. No need for the 90mb/sec for me. The advice was unless I was doing full on video it wasn't necessary.

As for sizes - I'm using 64GB and 32GB SD cards, and 32GB CF cards - always backing up across them. I'd rather leave a single SD card in the body than change them. Never lost an image in 10 years of DSLR usage when twinning up cards (although I have had images corrupt on a single card).

If I'm looking at 26 image bursts then I'd be holding a different body.

Only one SD card has ever failed on me completely. It was a TDK, bought in Tesco, and just decided to quit one day. Thankfully I hadn't taken anything of any significance. I only buy Sandisk now - the Samsung one, which is fine, was bought for me.

Went through technical guide for D800 and apparently, it can automatically exposure for faces...need to find out how you do it....

Not tested it. I've never wanted to shot 26 continuous frames. What do you mean by continuous, not burst? After you've filled the buffer, it will carry on shooting until the card becomes full.. just at a slower rate.

90MB/s is not even needed for video. The D800 produces 24Mb/s bitrate video.. which is pretty poor. Why do you need a 90MB/s card for 24Mb/s video.

If I'm looking at 26 image bursts then I'd be holding a different body.

This.. why the hell does anyone except press, sports or possibly wildlife need to shoot 26 continuous frames? If you need that kind of usage, you really have bought the wrong camera.

Anyway... just trying to save you some money here.... you just SOOO don't need a 90MB/s CF card in such a slow camera.

Its seriously not all about the read/write speeds in the camera, some of us cant be ar5ed waiting to download dozens/hundreds of images to out PC's, if a faster card coupled to USB 3.0 is faster and can save anytime at all then why not, otherwise we would all still be using core 2 duo machines an 15mbs cards

That's a valid point... but it's also not the concerns being voiced on here :)

Still... the read speed for my 60MB/s Sandisk card was actually nearer 80MB/s over USB3.

60, 80, 90.... that's a contiguous speed of a large file, but transferring many smaller files (and even a 45MB D800 RAW is a small file) you'll never realise that.

The cost difference between 90MB/s cards and 60 just doesn't make sense unless you have a D3s or something, and shoot sports, then yes, of course you need to eek out every last drop.

That's a 32GB Sandisk Extreme 60MB/s CF card

Buy a 90MB/s card by all means if you think you need it, but the cost differential vs. performance is crazy.
