Nikon D800......

Until I've got a shiny D800 in my hands and my cc has only been charged £2099.99 then you're not wrong yet !
I said you wouldn't get an email confirming the price from a rep. You have. And not honouring the price would be tricky now, as you've decided not to buy from your local dealer because you have an order with Amazon.

I'm hoping that you can see this without having to be a member:

D800 shot

If not, let me know.

I think that is very impressive!!

Kev.

I'm not aware of any 5DII problems

Really ? where were you when they first came out?, mirror problems/focus in contrasting situations 5D11, focus problems 1D111 and others.... and no I don't want an argument about it I have had both cameras when they both came out new and those are documented problems, they are also the reason that I switched to Nikon.

i must admit....4 weeks ago i had no interest in the d800 whatsoever, but now the more mini reviews and shots i see from it, the more i'm starting to lust after it.

Me too, I had wanted to go full frame for a while and was waiting on the 5D3 as I'm a Canon user currently but the ridiculous price as compared to the "original" D800 price tipped it for me, plus I will hopefully still get the "bargain" price from Amazon.

Fingers are still very much crossed !

Local Internal System Error? lol Can anyone see the irony? They can't get their sales system to correctly price one of the most technically advanced cameras on the market. Doesn't exactly instil faith with the camera!

I agree but then "We realised it was too cheap compared to the 5D3 / 1DX so we thought we'd squeeze a few more £££'s out of them" doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it ? :)

lol

The fact that once initial demand is fulfilled within the next 2-3 months and you will be able to pick one up off a shelf the price will go back down to the "pre-error" price will be just a coincidence of course.

Still, if you can't produce enough to match demand and know that they'll still sell at a higher price, you can't really blame them. Capitalism and all that.

Why is it when you're waiting for a special delivery the postman never seems to come!!?

Ive got a D800 in my "basket" at wex. Not paid a thing yet and the price is still £2399 when i checkout.
Wonder if i bought it now id get it at the pre order price. LOL.

Not sure im willing to spend that much for an experiment.

Yes you should, just had a e-mail from Wex, saying that prices have gone up, but I will pay the old price because I pre ordered, :)

So what do you think to it mate? Will it make me look anymore tired that I do already?? :D

Is it lots better then the existing bodies?

Its a new beast mate, its a new standard of image quality bringing the kind of detail I've always wanted. Dynamic range is fantastic and when I thought the AF system couldnt get better, it has! Its faster than my D3s. And its metering is very good, I will actually feel confident in aperture priority now, even in backlit situations it exposes for the face. Finally!

I cant tell you how good the files are though, I'll email you some over ;)

Snap. I'm going to wait a little while and let people rack up some usage with them. There seemed to be a bit of initial concern over appropriate lens and appropriate technique. If that proves to be mild hysteria, I'm going to find it hard to say no.

I meant i havent even put my card details in. My cookies have saved my basket, so not sure it would work. Shame as im looking at buying one in a month or 2 once reviewers have had time to convince me ;)

Well I guess Amazon got a load of stock in today, since mine was just despatched.

Oi! This isn't what I want to hear!!! Now I'm back to square one.... it's the dynamic range that's doing it. I'd love to see a straight comparison between something like the D3 and the D800 with Dynamic Range to see if there's a noticeable difference.

The D800 will not have a 24 mp sensor!!!!! Get over it. It makes no sense from a logical business stand point! Nikon will not come out with a $3000 – $4000 body that blows their $8000 money maker out of the water. Come on people be logical. Nikon doesn’t have to chase Canon. Canon has to chase Nikon which they always have. You will see a D4 with a sensor of at least 24mp maybe even slightly higher but not much which will replace both the D3x and the D3s. You will see a D800 with a 16mp – 20mp sensor because Nikon doesn’t want people to buy a D800 and not a D4 DUH!!!! They noticed this mistake with the D700 and D3. Why do you think all you people like the D700 so much? Cause it was D3 with a better price tag! Nikon won’t do that again. Then you will see a D300s replacement with a similar mega pixel sensor to the D800 only in DX. This makes Nikon’s camera line very stable with two professional bodies (D4 & D800), one semi-pro body (D300s replacement), and one top amateur body(D7000). With this type of line up coming, Nikon puts a lot pressure on Canon to keep up. I’m so tired of hearing everyone get so hopeful for a camera body with a better sensor than the already state-of-the art D3x at a price tag of at least $3000 less. Lets get real here. Any good business wouldn’t shoot themselves in the foot like that.

Have you been on Mars?

Good news. When did you place your pre-order, and how much was it?

14th Feb, £2399.

Of course, I can't be at home or get to the citylink depot this week so won't actually see it until next week...

Thanks for the reply. Mine was due to be despatched today, but got an apology email instead. How am I meant to take pictures with that?

I ordered a month after you, so I could be in for a wait.

Lucky you, I haven't even had an apology email yet ! :)

I got an apology email at the weekend, despite that I think my order never changed much from despatching on 26th. Didn't really expect it this month at least, so pleasantly surprised to get a camera yesyerday... which should be missing its delivery right around now. Might have to take a trip to Lincoln tonight instead if having it redelivered next week...

After sitting quietly and reading all the posts and waiting for the reviews. Thought I would now put in my penny's worth.

After spending the time since Christmas reviewing all my photos have realised that quite a lot have been taken in low light conditions and a large amount have been small animals and birds. So to me the D800 would be idea as it appears that the low light capaibility is equal to the D700 (from the reviews that I have seen so far) and that with the 36mp and cropping options, that the move from cropped sensor to FF should not be an issue.

Save a bit of money, chop in the D300 and maybe a small bit of credit would get me a new D800 right? Then the price goes up :bang:

Now could get a second hand D700, but if I was going to go there may as well go for a D3. For me the issue is the new price of the D800 is now so close to a secondhand D3s that a D3s is now the one to go for. So Nikon UK loses a customer for the sake of price gouging (to borrow an American expression). :bonk: Or go aborad and buy a D800, and Nikon UK still lose

Sometimes you have to wonder at these people making short term decisions.

The D3s and the D800 are totally different DSLR's for different purposes... If your purpose fits with what a D3s has to offer then great, you probably did not need a D800 in the first place :)

So, I just spent a few hours outdoors with my D800, and figured I'd do some "worst case scenario" testing. Here's 3 of them for anyone who happens to be interested.

"Oh no, I have to cover the bike race, and all I have is my 24-70!"
From Full Size to 1:1 Crop
(in the spirit of this, I'll point out the size of his glasses in the original compared to the detail of the handlebars you can see reflected in his glasses)

"I spent thousands on a body, but decided to do handheld 300mm macro at ISO 6400 with a £99 lens!"
Full size picture of some exciting earth to a 1:1 crop of the bottom centre
Ladybird dancing on some grass.
Both of the above processed in LR, no more than 2-3 minutes including noise reduction at I think 50 luminance/25 chroma, 25 sharpening.

The above are in no way to be taken as shining examples of quality photography because they're not. Just doing stupid things like high iso, shooting into the sun, excess cropping, etc. while I get used to the controls.

Contrary to claims that the D800 needs to be treated like royalty to get good results, it seems you can even put bargain basement glass on it and shoot like an idiot and still surprise yourself with the results.
