Nikon D800......

Back in the D800 club with a D800E:

Also picked up a 21mm Zeiss Distagon which is a wide angle prime I've lusted after for ages! Surprisingly easy to manual focus as well (who needs focus peaking!) actually got me thinking about adding a 35 f2 now....

Also tried out one of the new Tamron 45mm f1.8 VC lenses and it seems good but I'm not sure if I'm keeping it or not, big premium over the basic Nikon 50 f1.8 and I'm not sure its hugely better, nice lens to handle though!

So which other focus point/s or method would anyone recommend please ?

I use AF-C for anything that moves and AF-S for anything else. If you want to choose your point to focus on an eye then it has to be AF-S. If you were missing focus then either you or your gorgeous dog were moving after focus. Only other explanation is shutter speed?

I've just checked my 810, I've AF-C selected via top plate info. If I change to AF-S should that help? Is it still OK to use a single focus box or better to expand that I wonder?

For shooting landscapes or buildings it's best kept on AF-S ?

Thanks;
Peter

I stick with single point AF-S for most subjects unless it moves a lot. For off centre subjects I use the old tried and tested focus and recompose unless DOF is limited. (in which case I'll manually move the AF point or switch to auto)

For those subjects that move, I use AF-C D9

Very similar to what I do, although I don't use AFC enough to need to change the number of focus points [emoji106]

Up at 4.30am this morning,, to get over to Elie for sunrise, not any clouds to lighten up the sky, thou happy that the moon was still out and a bit of frost still on the ground.

Just loving my new camera setup

Clicking on the name link to the right of the image works ok. But the image or image name give the connection refused error which is a bit odd. Very nice shot too btw.

Nikon 27-70 2.8 ............ I bought a 16-35 at same time and it's not be on camera yet ..... Mind only had it over a week now

Back from a few days walking around Budapest, will upload some pics in due time. One thing to note, I'd bought a Black Rapid sport strap for my D800 and it was fantastic. I only took a 50mm lens but I was happily walking around with the camera for 2 days and had no issues what so ever, highly recommend one if you haven't got one.

Also if you haven't been then its a beautiful place to walk around, just be careful!! alcohol is very cheap and as such you can get carried away very easily! I'm still nursing a hangover 2 days later after being out in bars.

Looking forward to some pics! I was there last summer, beautiful city but was just too hot for a lot of togging! Good beer though!!!

Is anyone using a Billingham bag for carrying their D800/E? I've got the Hadley Pro and generally its great but I'd prefer something a little bit bigger to allow me to stick the D800 with a prime alongside my daily stuff like wallet, glasses maybe a sandwich!
I was thinking about a Billingham 307 but not sure if it would be huge v the Hadley Pro.

one question all that hopefully someone can help me with. A few people on here have posted photos with boarders around the image. I really like the look of this and on some images would like to create something similar to help draw the eye on. The problem is I have no idea how! Can anyone give me a little overview or point me in the direction of a resource to create this?

Hi Chris, good to see you in this neck of the woods, loved your first images posted yesterday, super sharp [emoji106]

I'm not a Billingham person, but have just ordered a leather ONA Prince Street, love those bags. The Brixton version may do you?

Can't wait for the photos! It's a great place, I went there about 20 years ago, drove there for a week, then drove with the hangover from hell to Amsterdam, then it got really painful [emoji38]

Cheers Gregg will take a look at the Brixton!

Can people give me there feedback please on a image that I cant decide if its better in colour or B&W. It could be neither, I just cant decide between the 2. It may just be that I didn't capture the composition right and so it doesn't "pop" for me.

I like the colour version personally. The stanchion on the left of the photo, might it be possible to give it a little more space above? Take a little off the bottom of the image and add it to the top possibly ?

Pete

David, frames are in many software progs, but for ease I use (free) Picasa. Really is dead easy! (y)

Thanks all, I was needed fresh eyes. Finally enough that was the one my fiancé preferred so maybe I should listen to her more often!

Unfortunately the crop is pretty much as shot, there was a little more but at the bottom of the shot that I removed to even it out. Theres a lesson about composition for me to learn.

Or you could buy an inexpensive used Nikkor 28mm f2.8D for that slightly wider approach.

:)

Not sure if you have used many of them Peter but how do the D lenses perform on the D800? I had a few back when I had a 24mp D600 and found them ok if not great, always though they wouldn't be up to the task at 36mp.

Have only just bought a 28mm f2.8D for £25, it's maybe a tad soft and vignettes wide open, I put a photo up within the past two pages here called "colour lines" taken with the 28mm D, it's a lovely focal length, I'm sure the 28mm f1.8G is a different lens completely quality wise.

Chris, do you think the Nikkor D lenses arn't suited for the D8** sensors...?...and why ?

I just had quite mixed experience with them on lower resolution bodies (D600/610) some were fine, in fact I still have a 24mm f2.8D which I've just never got rid of but both the 20 f2.8D and 35 f2D weren't brilliant.

To be fair, the 28 D is the worst of all the D primes as it is a basic 6 element design and doesn't have CRC. The manual AI-s version has 8 elements and CRC. (but for £25, even I would have bought it) It's not a terrible lens as stopped down it performs decently. The 35 f2 D is supposed to be a bit better vs the old f2 AI-s and the 20, 24 and 50 D lenses are supposed to be the same optically as the old manual AI-s versions which are roughly 35 years old.

The newer AF-S stuff is substantially better but obviously costs significantly more. Tokina made a rather nice AF 17mm prime for a while and the old nikon 20-35 zoom was pretty decent as well. (though neither would rival a 16-35 or 14-24)
