Hi

I am thinking of buying a D80 can anyone advise me. I am just getting into photography so any advice would be apreciated a friend has suggested the nikon

Thanks Kev.

Excellent camera, getting a bit long in the tooth now though, so it's only worth buying one if the price is right...

i love my D80, love the feel of it and would not let it go for anything.....( maybe D3).
i always find myself in RGB shop holding other bodys and i cant find anything else which is so easy to use.(imo)

get yourself shoping and handle them all and see what suits you the best

Good camera to cut your teeth on in the DSLR world, I had one before my D300, could not fault it.

The D80 is a very good camera, and ideal as a first DSLR. I had one until I recently upgraded to a D300. There are better cameras about as the D80 is a few years old now, the D90 is good (especially at high ISO in low light conditions), but it's considerably more. For the money, a good all round camera.

Thanks very much everyone, i will keep looking.

I love my D80 too, am really happy with the IQ and the ISO capabilities are good enough for me too [I've used 1000 a couple of times, some evident Noise but not enough to ruin a pic by a fair amount[some/most of the time!]]

Id recommend it no problems!

I have a D80 and its done me proud. A great camera, easy to use and understand. Id defo go for it if you can get a good price. :)

Sorry D80 owners, but Ken Rockwell says

"Don't buy the D80. The new D90 completely obsoletes it. If money matters, buy the almost identical D40, and if not, the D90 is a complete generation beyond the old D80."

Wouldn't hold too much by the KR review. There are a few fairly fundemental differences between the D80 and D40. In particular the ability to AF with the AF/D range of lenses which the D40 just can't do.

i looked at the d80 as i had a d40 as a first dslr, but the price and features didn't match what i had and wanted and ended up getting a sony a300.

with the sony a300:
10 mega pixels
inbuilt focus motor
inbuilt image stabilisation/ VR
live view

the D90 is better if you can stretch to it, has advantage of a cmos sensor, live view, faster continuous drive, bigger and better LCD, but that said its more expensive and at end of day 2 years ago the D80 was the dogs and in 2 years time we will be saying the same about the D90s replacement.................

what's the price range for a good condition d80 these days?

Uncle Ken talking sh!te as usual, couldn't you say this about any upgrade, all new cameras should be somewhat better than there predecessors otherwise what would be the point, the D80 is a very capable camera in it's own right.

As above, and if you can pick one up you shouldn't be paying much more than £300/£320ish really, otherwise save the extra cash and go for the D90, excellent high ISO speeds ;)

Thanks folks, i have not heard a bad report about a d80 yet.
Well except for Ken Rockwell that is.

Cheers Kev
