I would like a remote shutter release and see the Nikon ML-L3 works with the D80 - I used to have this remote with my D50 and found it to be poor and only seemed to work when the unit was within a foot or so of the camera so I am looking for something a bit better quality (like the Zigview Twin 1 which I had with my D200 - doesn't work with the D80 unfortunately)
THIS one on £bay purports to have working range "up to 25m" and I wondered if anyone had one & would recommend it or would recommend something else (there are others on £bay & elsewhere) - Any help greatly appreciated ... Paul ;)

I use a ML-L3 remote with my D50 and have no problems with it, seems to work fine upto about 4m away (can't say I've tried it further than that)

I too use a ML-L3 with my d50 and have had no hassles.

Furthest I have used it has been about 8-10metres and no complaints.

If I can find my tape measure I might run a few diagnostics for us ;)

Thanks Anth (& others) - Where were you in relation to the camera (in front / behind / to the side?) - Maybe I got a duff ML-L3? Mine certainly wouldn't work at all from behind the camera (maybe you could check that in your "diagnostics"? - The one I linked to on £Bay is pretty cheap but being an orthodox tight@rse I'd prefer to go for something that is recommended here ... Paul ;)

the reciever for the remote is on the front of the camera so remote will not work from behind/side.

the zapper needs to be pointed at front of camera & if you have a long lens on and stand to 1 side then the lens may block path of signal .

and yes my ML- L3 will work at a range something like 10 metres ,cant say i've ever measured it

I have one similar to the one in Pauls original post for the D70s, [bought from the ebay store kendo mentions], and it is limited, in as much as at the right angle, I can get 10ft away from the camera, but with the infra red receiver being slotted in on the front, and the lens in the way, that can drop to a few inches in most circumstances. In fairness, that was all I wanted, just something that meant I didnt have to touch the camera, so no complaints. I haven't tried anything that claims to have a longer range, and use a cable release on the D200, so not much help I am afraid.

o.k an update
i've just had a play with mine and found the remote does in fact work from behind & to the side of camera but no further than 1.5 metres  a new one on me .

with camera at 1 end of garden & me at tother pointing at front of camera it still worked ,my house built before 1970 doesnt have a metric garden so it can only be measured in feet and it is 55 foot long.

maybe you have a blat fattery in remote , the other thing is
( sorry if i'm teaching granny to suck eggs )

in custom shooting menu NO 30 you have remote on duration , default setting is a short time it can be set to 15 minutes , at end of whatever time is set drive mode comes out of remote

Nikon one works fine for me. I can't really envisage a scenario where you'd need to use the wireless remote from a long way behind the camera.

"Metric garden" pmsl  - thanks for all your hard work & research - I don't have my ML-L3 anymore (sold it with the D50) - As to using a remote a long way behind the camera well I agree I can't see why either but being just behind when using the tripod in the dark would be handy :embarrassed: - this was a non-starter with my ML-L3 so maybe I did have a duff one ...
