I have just purchased a second hand D80, after prvious discussions on here. can I pls ask for some assistance on a lens. it is not in a kit.. my objectives is to have one good lens, I have up to £250-ish, could push if necessary.

I usually like portrait or general landscape, macro, not into fast or sporty type anything.

I would prefer to buy one really cracking lens, as this was my let down on my film cameras,I never could feel the pics were sharp (could be me!) and only now making an effort to pick up on digital. when I start reading reviews, I get lost. v grateful for any help. :help:

Sigma 24-70 f2.8? Not a "true" macro, but it does focus reasonably close, it's fast at f2.8 throughout, and falls within budget (try onestop digital based in Hong Kong).

Alot of people also rave about the sigma 24-60 2.8, which is cheaper as well, but I've never tried that one :)

The Tamron 17-50 is a superb lens. Well within your budget.

The Nikkor 16-85 VR is probably Nikon's best DX lens, but is a bit overpriced at £380-£400.

The Sigma 17-70 is also really good, although my first sample was de-centered (currently in Japan being repaired), 2nd one was superb. About £180-£220.

If you want an uber bargain the Nikkor 28-105 AF-D is really really good, but probably not wide enough on DX.

I use my 17-50 tamron 2.8 more than any other lens and if I had to cut down to just one then this would be it. Very sharp and a lovely bokeh too.

Is this lens another one of those "if you get a good copy" type lenses? I know it can be that way with any company, but I've read some bad reviews about Tamron's quality control.

I've just moved to a D80 and use a Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8. I decided to go with this lens after seeing nothing but good reviews for it.

The fact it only cost £140 delivered from the US also played a big factor.
