Morning all, I would love some help if possible, I have taken delivery this morning of a Nikon d80 with 18-135mm lens, (12,000 images) I have connected lens, inserted battery & Sd card. Taken I pic and is showing Err message, manual advises to release shutter, done that still no joy, if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

So the error message is coming up when the camera is trying to write to the card rather than before an image is taken? If so it sounds, like either the SD card is bust or there is a writing problem with the camera.

It took first image ok, then the error is there continual, I have tried different cards in it and still the same. :(. Have removed battery and left it too. It's is so annoying, is this something that could have been caused in transit I wonder, it has just travelled nearly 300 miles by special delivery royal mail!!!!! This is supposed to be a present for my mum, as she is always out with my canon, but looks like its £300+ down the drain. :(

Have you tried formatting the cards in the camera?

Does the display always say 'err' all of time now, not just when trying to record an image. If so, that often happens when the camera doesn't think that a lens is attached. It could be as simple as dirty electric contacts between lens and camera. You can clean them with a pencil eraser amongst other things. A master reset of the camera wouldn't do any harm either.

Yes it flashes all of the time, I did remove & refit the lens, I will try the cleaning & a reset too thanks x

Reset didn't work, Can't find an eraser when u need one! X

Does the lens have an aperture ring and if so, is it set to (and locked at) the minimum aperture?

Push the shutter button slightly harder than normal. It should give a reassuring THUNK and the Err will clear.

If it comes back or won't clear with that then it's time to call Nikon.

Leanne, should it prove to be faulty, where was it purchased from? If it was ebay and you paid using paypal, you do have a bit of protection.

I have had this very same problem on my D80 since Thursday. Have also tried all the above, but with no success. Mine has done 16800 :(

Here's Nikon's advice.

http://support.nikonusa.com/app/ans...ws-"err"-on-the-top-lcd,-what-does-that-mean?

When they say "release the shutter" - code Err automatically locks the shutter and a harder than normal press clears it (that's true of pretty much all Nikons including film bodies). Advice I've been given over the phone is that if it happens once, it's just one of those thing. If it happens twice, send it in.

BTW the top Google hit for this is wrong. Err can be caused by dirty lens contacts but there can me many other causes. Including for example a total mechanical failure of the shutter assembly....

Also, there's a world of difference between Err and fEE error codes. fEE means either you've done something silly with the lens or the aperture mechanism is broken.

Thank u all for your advice, I have explored all avenues and still no joy! Spoke to Nikon, ad they have said I can send free post to them to see what issues is, has anyone had dealings with the service before. It is not recognising the memory cards at all, so hoping something simple, :(

Dont worry yourself with it, send it back to where you bought it and get a refund.

Nikon charge about £70 a hour +VAT labour, then you'll have parts on top of that. The rubber grips will be replaced as part of the disassembly, and those are about £30.
It will be at least £100 before they even start.
