Nikon D7xxx owners thread

edit: Going to order one so original post doesn't matter anymore :p

Does anyone use a 3rd party battery grip? or batteries?
If so, what ones would you guys recommend?

A number of members, including myself, have found X-Pro batteries very good :)

Thanks Gramps.

How are you finding your D7200? Noticed you're selling your D4, so it must be good :p If I hadn't put down my new camera & lens fund down on a property I'd of bought your D4.

I've only had one go with it so far Alison and on a very dull day but the AF is extremely good and I was using it with a TC 1.7 on by mistake! Out again today with hopefully better light and can't wait to see how well it performs without a TC :)

Awesome.

I've had my D7000 hunting like crazy with my TC on so hopefully, that will no longer be a problem. Just hoping I'll get it by Friday in time for the Lake District but knowing my luck, I will arrive just after I leave :p Plus Hdew is a little slow at times.

I use Duracell DRNEL15 from Amazon with no problems: link.

Well, weather was dull as dishwater today but the D7200 performed really well - I am sure that there are far more 'keepers' today than a normal day, even allowing for the dullness and including when using the D4 and D4S ... I am very pleased with it.
The D7200 seemed to get solid focus much more regularly ... I am used to getting the flickering focus spot quite regularly but for the most part the focus spot on the D7200 remained constant. Tracking of birds in flight went really well ... there was the odd occasion where I couldn't lock focus onto a very busy Little Tern but I suspect this was more due to me than the camera. In the main, once focus was locked on, it would stay on and produce a good image.
It seems that the D7200 is giving me better results from my Nikon 500 f4 than any other camera I've used with it.
I am really looking forward to using this camera in good light as I am expecting to get some good results ... having said that, though the low-light performance is good and definitely an improvement over the D7100, it is not as forgiving as the D4/D4S and certainly doesn't have the buffer/write speed of either but no one would expect it to.
I would class this as a very capable wildlife camera, if you don't need to spray-shoot :)
That has made my mind up for me, be nice going back to a crop body with the small 300 F4 on.

Got one ordered, can anyone recommend a NON Nikon grip or are the Meike ones as good as pretty much anything else?

I've used Meike grips without any issues whatsoever ... there have been some others mentioned, Pixel I believe was mentioned as one more similar to Nikon but looks like they now come from Germany and I don't think there was really much difference.
Hahnel are another good maker but at £99:99 you might as well get a Nikon.

The Nikon grip will be weather sealed won't it? Doubt the aftermarket ones are. Don't know if that's of any importance to you?

On the otherhand, I've used Neewer and Meike and both were fine. (y)

cheers guys.

I'm glad the D7000 batteries work in the D7200.. But ugh the cost of a new grip :(

Wooooooooo my cameras arrived! Hdew service is awesome as always. Just in time for the trip to the Lake District :D

Hopefully I have a battery grip coming tomorrow. It's only a 3rd party £25 one though, figured it will last me for at least a few months.

Watch out the grip might not work, I had to send mine back, I just carry a spare Battery at the mo

Mcoplus -T Serie Battery Grip Pack for DSLR Camera Nikon D7100, Replacement of MB-D15

Ummed and ahed about a grip and decided to put the money towards a second D7200 body instead :D One for the 18-35 and one for the 58/1.4. No more messing about changing lenses. What a little gem this camera is - and a bit of a bargain too.

Still using mine most days with a Tamron 150-600

it's all about light - when the light gets better I will start to use my D7100 again for birds

been using the D750 so far this year and cropping

Just ordered a D7200 as a partner for my D7100 (Hard to resist at £635). Do we not have enough owners on here for a D7200 thread?

Mine arrived yesterday as a second body to go along with my D750... Very impressed so far and I'm looking forward to trying it out properly :)

Ordered from Panamoz on Friday and it got here today. Impressive service! Hopefully if this crap weather gors away I can try it out tomorrow.

Please let us know how you get on. Specifically, AF and high ISO performance. (D7100 owner here!)

@gramps are you using your Tamron 150-600 with your D7200? Just wondering how quick the focus is with it? I've seen some amazing pics on Flickr with both of Terns diving and they're pin sharp, assuming it's a pretty nifty combo?

I think gramps sold it on here and now has a Nikon 500mm f4 and I'm insanely jealous :)

Tis true, got a great deal on a 500 f4 VR ... the D7200 has greatly improved AF so I am sure that it will work well with the 150-600 :)

Well Ive had a couple of hours out with the D7200 this morning christening it with some birds in flight and intermittant harsh sunlight/ very dull conditions. In general terms, apart from the increased buffer it is so similar to my D7100 that I would be hard pressed to find any practical differences. I didnt see any real improvement in auto focus over the D7100, it may be there in theoretical terms but in the field it seems hardly noticeable. Focussing in low light was also similar. Image quality wise I have yet to process the images but at a glance they dont look any better than those delivered on the D7100.
Obviously thats only based on a couple of hours and I will no doubt learn more as I continue to use it but to anyone thinking its going to be a big step up from your D7100......it isnt. It is a superb camera at the price and Im glad Ive got it but if I was moving up from a D7000 I would take advantage of the lower price of the D7100 unless of course, that increased buffer and theoretically improved auto focus along with other tweaks, float your boat.

theoretically improved auto focus

Personally I don't find anything 'theoretical' about the AF improvement, much quicker lock-on and sustained focus for me, especially with BIF :)

Thanks, that is interesting Graham as I am thinking about replacing my D7100 with the D7200

what I have found, (for birds) is that the D7100 is well behind the D750 in the following main areas for bird images
AF is much faster
Buffer is far better
high ISO images are much much better

even when D750 images are cropped down to the same as the D7100 DX size ..... the D750 is well ahead of the D7100, in IQ ........... in all but the best light, and over ISO 400 I now find the D7100 really disappoing compared to the D750 ............. pity as I would really like a DX body with the attributes of the D750

Just IMHO

Is that improvement over the D7100 Gramps? Maybe Ive just not experienced it yet I will reserve full judgement for a few more trips out. Today though I would have got exactly the same results using my D7100 Im sure. For reference I was using my Nikkor 80-400 (New model). Im awaiting delivery of the 300mm f4 so cant wait to try that on the camera.

Ah, lucky you! I have the non-VR version arriving tomorrow so comparisons won't be straightforward. I've read some amazing testimonials about the VR one though.
