Nikon D7xxx owners thread

what happened to the thread with the eneloops on test with a decent charger?
were there any unexpected long term findings?

Most sources actually discourage fully discharging Li ion batteries. Seems top up charges are actually good for them. Or at least not bad.

Most sources perhaps, but Nikon recommend that their own 'brand' barriers are fully discharged, according to their manual.

Who are all these other sources just out of idol curiosity ?

its common knowledge to people who regularly use or demand the best performance out of their batteries..

a google search using the term "Lithium based battery care" turned up this very informative page - http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

i'd like to guide you to the second illustration table showing depth of discharge vs how many cycles a typical battery can endure before its performance drops below a usable working range :)

It was the neewer one. I must admit that it was very nice and matched the body but it wasn't for me - it just made the camera too chunky for me so it's gone already

Good job you didn't buy the genuine Nikon one. I like the feel of my grip, the whole camera feels nicely balanced but I do use a Q strap.

Maybe a new lens will follow..just sold a body and a lens so am thinking what to get

Yep...it's that moment of excitement that happens just before death when the wife finds out :exit:

watch this vid and see what you think

Its a camera test.. he says the best camera there is the 7k1... yet the best gadget (70d) wins.... how many people wud actually use wifi? Video? A rotating touch screen. Non of these aid the picture quality.

If you want a camera get the 7k1 if you want a toy to play with get the 70d is has loads of pointless features on it.

Just ordered one of these and I'm hoping that the left focus issue has been put to bed, I've never had a Nikon before, I sold all of my Canon EOS gear (kept the fd stuff) last year and bought into the Fuji X system which I really like and enjoy but I just missed having a DSLR.

I'm using this opportunity to have a change and try something different, I like the reports (apart from the focussing issue) that I've read and I've just bought a Tokina 12-24 from the classifieds to nail on it as I'm mostly into landscapes and like wide angles.

I'm curious to see how I take to it, moving from Canon to Fuji wasn't a big deal so I'm hoping the Nikon will be as intuitive. I also like the some of the birding images on here, IQ looks very very good.

Fingers crossed I get a good copy.

got nothing against the camera or his findings if you like gadgets go for the canon if you want a good camera go for the nikon ;) ( i am not a totally biased nikon owner)

Dont forget nikon are doing spring £100 cashback too at the moment.

the Nikon remote is only £4 on amazon. I bought one at it works perfectly

For interest I've had my 7100 since first announced. and its brill - does have left focus prob but not a prob for me !! - i'l send in in when warranty nearly done - also purchased a 'gray' d600 when d610 came out (an amazing price AND with a three year warranty - not Nikon though) anyway no dust so far and I have a really good sensor cleaner.Try this

I got the wireless 7dayshop version, but the plug going into the camera was so tight it didn't connect properly at first. Then when it did go in, I pulled it out nd the thing came apart leaving a bit still in the camera. I sorted it with some needle nose pliers.....but still, just saying cheap does not necessarily mean good value. I've hardly used it since and can't be bothered to get a new battery for it....

Not sure what you mean. If it is wireless, why was there a plug to push in? The one to which I referred is a cable release = no battery as far as I am aware

Do you have a link for the 7day shop one. I bought this one and people have reported the cable being very tight also. As an aside, the receiver has packed up on mine. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pixel-TW-28...8&qid=1385128595&sr=8-3&keywords=pixel+tw-282

I think it was about a tenner when I bought it, but as mentioned it's not the best quality in the world in terms of the tightness of the connector into the camera. Mine works now, but I always have to wiggle it about to get the plug in and at the back of my mind I'm thinking about not knackering the camera.....so I've managed without

I did initially plan on returning it as it didn't work at all to start with. After going back and forth with 7dayshop support and getting it working, with the subsequent plug issue I just couldn't be bothered to go back to them again! (I can hear my mum in my head saying "easy come, easy go!" ;) )

Iv'e had a decent part-exchange offer for my D90 against a new D7100, what have members who have made this change say they have noticed for the better or worse.

I have a small problem on the D7000 when trying to do a selfie. I move the dial to self-timer and set the menu item for timer to 10 seconds, I put the camera on a tripod and press the shutter button and go and take my pose. Doesn't work though because as soon as I press the shutter button the camera focuses before the timer starts so when I take position, the camera is focused on where I stood when I pushed the shutter button. Is there a way round this? Damned if I can find one in the manual.

Ahh, you have joined us now have you? Kept that quiet. :D

what about an infra red remote?

Hi, Minnnt,

Been here for ages, just haven't posted on this thread before.

I think you will need a remote or manual pre-focus

So there is no way round it then? A way to have the camera focus just before it takes the picture and not just after one presses the shutter button? Seems a bit of a design problem.

I did take the picture I wanted (for the Challenge 52 thread) using my short cable remote but it wasn't an ideal method.

Long before the advent of digital photography and auto focus. I used to have a Nikon 35mm film camera with a mechanical self timer and a manual focusing lens. Back in the 80s if you wanted to take a self-portrait you would put an 'x' (tape / chalk) on the floor and measure the distance from the film plane to the subject and using the indication markings on the lens set the distance. Alternatively, put a stand in or any object on that spot and manually focus on it before activating the self-timer, or in some cases a bulbous air release.

Today with a D7000 ( which I own ) the same principle still applies, still using a tripod, switch the lens setting to 'M' (manual) and focus to the point where you want to stand / sit. Then activate the self-timer.

That said, I seem to recall and I have only tried this the once. If you set the lens to AF mode, if you use the IR remote from the seated position and press the switch. The lens will focus on you before taking the exposure. Job done. You can buy one of these on EBay / Amazon for about £10 - bargain !

Let us know how you get on :-)

I have flicked through the manual but still can't work out how I can change my LCD view from Mono to Colour (I shoot in RAW)

Anybody have any ideas ?

Is your camera set to shoot mono in the styles menu? Try setting it to neutral or vibrant etc.

Thank you it didn't appear to be that. In the end I hit the restore factory settings options which was a bit of a pain but still it's sorted now. Thank you.

Yes - sent it to Nikon and it was returned in 4 days fixed and cleaned with updated firmware

mine is out of warranty so not sure where to send it,and how much it would cost??could it be my lens??
