Nikon D7xxx owners thread

It was taken with the 70-200mm f2.8 VR1. I'm finding its a great lens on the D7100, it really shines. I wasn't too impressed with it on the D7000 (it may just be my D7000, I think they may be a focus issue with it) but its seems to be better on the D7100. Definitely a lens I would recommend.

Here's an example of a Puffin taken recently on Skomer with the D7100 and 70-200.

Wow, that is very impressive. Very very sharp

That's an awesome image, looks like you've found a super combination :-)

I'm with Rob on this one, the 70-200 f2.8 is a great lens, fast focusing and sharp, sharp , sharp. How I have AF tuned my D7100 for all my lens/converter combinations I as happy as Larry (who every Larry is!)

On a recent trip to the British Wildlife Centre it produced some amazing images;

but it also works in the real world too;

Is this a known fault?

After taking a couple of shots I press the image review button and the camera appears to die. No image on the LCD, unable to access menus and unable to take more shots.

The problem is intermittent (but more there than not) and of course while writing this it will not go into fault to enable me to report more detail.

I'm stuck out in Spain at the moment and therefore cannot access my supplying dealer (Greys of Westminster) , but clutching at straws here any suggestions as to something I may have inadvertently set up incorrectly would be much appreciated.

I've currently returned the Nikon to its bag and brought out the little X10. Not at all happy as you can imagine.

Regards
Neil

It is a similar problem to the one some D800 users are reporting. Are you using fast cards? And what type of card are you using?

Does it show err on the top display? Mine did it when I first got it, then seemed to rectify itself, but a week ago it happened again. Then today on the lighting masterclass it happened loads until I eventually just have up using my camera :-(

The mirror locks up and I have to turn it on and off a few times before I can use it again!

Well I've decided to send mine back. I only ordered it on 28th July and it has less than 1900 actuations. Hopefully it'll sort my problem once and for all

I was out shooting on Sunday for 5 hours (pretty much continuous). I started with a 100% battery, camera set to high speed continuous, RAW & JPG fine on different slots, AF-C, I shot just over 1500 (so just over 3000 if you count both file formats) and the battery only went down by 22%.

I was well impressed by the battery life. I'd even bought a spare especially because I didn't think it'd last.

Sorry for the blank post- internet connection could be better.

I do on occasion get the "err" message but not always. Even with the slower cards Im having problems although they do seem to offer a slight improvement. I'm pulling the batteries in an attempt to coax the camera out of hibernation - sometimes works, sometimes doesnt.

I'm in Spain and meant to shooting a load of gigs - had to cancel that now.

Mines going back just as soon as I get home (mid Aug) but cant decide if its a Nikon issue or one for my supplying dealer (Grays of Westminster). I seem to have warranty cover in all directions but I suppose if I'm going to return the camera as "not fit for purpose" it should be Grays.

Currently I'm bitterly disappointed with my purchase having missed out on what for me will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to shoot so many gigs from such close quarters - at least I have the little Fuji for family snaps.

I use the Sandisk Extreme 45mb/s 16GB.

Touch wood, I've never had an issue with them.

If you get them at the right time, you can pick them up for a little over a tenner each.

Do you notice the benefits of the extra speed the Extremes have?

I have 45 and 30 mbs Extreme cards. It makes no difference to the buffer but you can tell the difference in the time it takes to clear the buffer. It's never been an issue though as I tend to shoot at 3fps rather than full to try limit my over shooting. I would only turn it up if shooting something like birds in flight.

Mines going back to the retailer because my warranty is with them. Luckily I emailed them when it first happened so they know I've had the problem before.

I love the camera but not when it won't work. When you read around the net mine seems a common problem with various other models so hopefully an easy fix

Funny how people think 2x8GB is statistically less likely to fail than 1x16Gb card I.e not twice the chance of failure.......

But that is why there are two card slots.....

Sorry, not having a pop. It's just I find it amusing. I work in Pro Audio for TV/Film and every year whilst drive capacity stretches from 2TB to 4 TB we get the same reaction from people worrying about too many eggs in one basket.... This years capacity worry is next years "that's fine."

Capacity doesn't bother me:)

I've got a 32gig in one slot and a 64 in the other. The only card I've ever had fail was a brand new cheapie from 7dayshop - one of their own ones which they replaced and no problem since (it worked in the camera but wasn't recognised by the PC)

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I'm using SanDisk Extreme Pro
32GB / 95MBs

I have 4 of these and have not experienced any problem yet, I have been using them for a year of so in both my D7000 and D7100.

Hi all,

I am seriously looking at upgrading from my Panasonic bridge camera to a DSLR. My local camera shop has a second hand D7000 with the 18-105 lens for around £500.

My questions are, is this a good deal and is it too much of a camera for a first DSLR? My thinking is that it is gonna last me a while and I can just add different lenses to it.......

My plan would be to keep the bridge and use the Nikon for mainly motor sports to start with and then develop my use.

Thanks for looking and any feedback is much appreciated,

John

Nikon D7100 normal multiplier for lenses is X 1.5 i.e 50mm lens = 75mm in full frame terms. what is the multiplier when using the 1.3 crop feature ?

thanks - mike

Thanks folks - I think if I use x2 as a quick calculation that would be near enough -so thanks againfor quick replies.

just for those who dont know how the value 1.95 is calculated. the calculation is crop mode value x crop sensor value ie 1.3x1.5 = 1.95

so 2x is a good guide for 1.3 crop modes equivalent focal length. dont forget mp is reduced from 24mp to 16mp as you are using a smaller area of the sensor.

Mine arrived yesterday. Loving it so far. I did have a D5100 before this, so it wasn't completely new to me. This video gives a good run-through of the camera -

It is a pretty powerful camera, and could take a little while to get used to but that also means I don't think you'll 'grow out' of it any time soon.

Sounds like a good deal to me (shutter count, condition etc.?).

Had a thought today. When mine arrived I decided to have a quick flick through the manual for some reason (can't remember why) and noticed a little table stating the number of continuous shots you could take. JPEG said 100 so I thought that was very good, overkill even. Put this into practice and the buffer accommodates only 14 shots. Have I missed something or does the manual lie?

It's wrong. I only get 13 full quality raw shots lol.
