Nikon D7xxx owners thread

Well Ian - Don't come North - Essex also dull, damp and miserable - weather not too good either :bonk:

I went out on Monday as I need the practice, GLOOMY OR WHAT! but turn the shots into B&W and you may just get some pleasing shots.

I pre-orderd one today, so just have to wait now.

btw, the best UK price i've seen so far is £989 (Mathers, Bolton)

I've just seen this price too, I'm trying to hold off until at least May. Both the d800 and d600 dropped a little after a few months. it would be nice to get one before a planned trip to skomer in June.

....so many settings. Anyone know of any good guides/videos on initial settings? Some of this is gibberish to me, coming from a D70!

Omar,
I have an Exel spreadsheet with a huge amount of different settings to use for different types of shooting, eg travel/landscape, weddings/portraits, sports/action, and point and shoot.
It basically gives a list of all of the different camera settings to set for each of these scenarios.
I downloaded it from a different forum, so not sure if it is allowed to be posted on here, so heres a link:

Download D7000 settings spreadsheet

It is a bit complicated due to the number of settings listed, but there is a tab along the bottom with an introduction and instructions.
Hope this helps.

Been to a local store today and lifted a D7000 for the first time. It was ceratinly chunkier and heavier than my D3100, but I loved having all the settings to hand rather than hunting in the menus.

As for all those focus points...... oooooooooooooh, flashing lights.

Must resist upgrading, must resist. :nono:

I've purposely resisted going to a shop to hold one for exactly this reason!

Just an observation - but a week or so ago i became the owner of a new Nikon 24-70 and an initial quick check and further 'live' use of the lens shows no AF fine tune required. A bit odd i thought as all my other lenses (none of them this high grade) all require -10/-12 . Could it be that its just luck that this lens is a perfect match to my d7000 ? or is it something to do with the quality of the 24-70 and the basic factory set-up of the camera. Anyway next week I will also have another expensive lens - 105mm 2.8 micro - so we'll see how that fares out of the box.

Further to my previous - 105mm no adjustment nec! I have pre-ordered the d7100 so we'll see how that does with my small collection of lenses.

Finally I'm going to get a D7000 after waiting for months........which SD cards do you guys recommend?
WEX have a good offer at the moment with 18-105 kit. plus all the extra battery and filter etc.
i think is better than grey import....
what do you guys think?

Just ordered a D7000...finally!

Hi Beagle - I have just ordered from WEX, did the body only instead of kit, but i'vegot a free next day delivery voucher code if your interested?

Camera still wont come till Monday now, but saves me £4.99 as you have the option to choose a day for delivery!

18-105 First lens i had with my d7000 - A great lens for a kit lens , easy to walk around with and a good performer. I don't thnk you will be disappointed with that set-up.

that will be great ElmoHolz.... if you can PM me with it I will try to get in the morning. thanks:clap::clap::clap:

I am currently using Sandisk Extreme cards but I also have some Transcend and their UHS-1 cards a great value and super fast (I don't have any but are what I will get next time I order a card). I always buy from mymemory.co.uk as they are cheap and every card has so far passed a serial check with the manufacturer.

I also use the Sandisk Extreme and never had a problem. Also I have the Transcend WiFi SD card which adds wifi capability to the camera - works well and allows you to send pictures directly to iPad etc.

+1, I use SanDisk 30MB/s Extreme HD Video SDHC, I've got 2 8GB cards in the card with 2 spare 8GB cards in case I need to change them over. I've never had any problems with them.

I picked up two 16gb SanDisk 30MB/s Extreme SDHC cards (it was a two pack) from Currys for £19. Good price for a brick and mortar store, if you ask me.

Order is placed.......:clap:Just the wait now....

What has everyone been trying with regards to AF Fine tune? I did a test today with a test card - my 35mm adjusted to around -5 and my 18-200 adjusted to about -2. Not too bad, really.

I'll give that a bash tomorrow - i'm guessing outdoor light would be ideal. Cheers! :)

Hi
is the idea of the 1.3x crop mode on the D7100 the same as using a 1.4x TC on a D7000?

Ta

I think that you would lose a bit of image quality with the TC on the D7000

The 1.3 crop mode with change the crop factor to 1.95 (1.5 x 1.3) from 1.5, so you gain focal length at the expense of reducing MP from 24MP to 16MP. Using a teleconverter with give extra length at the expense of losing light, image quality and focus speed. The loss of each of these depends on the TC used and the lens its used with.

A quick calculation would give the following with a 300mm f4 lens:

D7100 in 1.3 crop mode : 300mm lens at f4 x1.95 = 585mm equivalent 35mm focal length at f4 at 16MP

D7100 using 1.4 tc: 300mm at f4 x1.4 tc x1.5 = 630mm equivalent 35mm focal length at f5.6 at 24MP

D7000 using 1.4 tc: 300mm at f4 x1.4 tc x1.5 = 630mm equivalent 35mm focal length at f5.6 at 16MP

For me I see the cropped mode on the d7100 as the nearly the equivalent of using a 1.4 tc on the d7000 without losing one stop of light and being able to turn the mode on and off without having to remove the lens. I'm not sure if image quality will be affected apart from losing MP as I've never used a camera with it.

What I do find interesting if I've got my sums correct will be using a d7100 with 300mm f4 lens with 1.4 tc in 1.3 cop mode with give 820mm f5.6 at 16MP. This would be especially nice if the image quality is not badly affected, could be a cheaper way (and only way for me) of getting 800mm f5.6 than using the new £15K nikon lens ;). A 500mm sigma would give a crazy 985mm 35mm equivalent in crop mode and hopefully without any loss in quality or light.

The questions I want to ask Nikon at Focus if i can are how well with the d7100 work with the 300m f4 and 1.4 tc in crop mode, if image quality is affected by the crop mode and if the crop mode is better than cropping in post processing.

I'm happy with the 16MP sensor on the d7000, there is more than enough pixels for me. If I could have the benefit of having the equivalent of a 1.4 tc that I can turn on and off at a push of a button, without losing a stop of light or affect auto focus speed and still have a similar amount of MP to the d7000 that sounds great to me. The more I think about the d7100 the more I talk myself into it, I'm thinking of getting a 2nd body and this could be perfect for me. Ive been really happy with the d7000 and I don't really need the build of a d300 so I've no need to wait for a "D400". I'm waiting to see what the first people who buy it make of it and see how the reviews go.

Ok I know this is probably a silly question but I'm not sure why it's a silly question

What are the benefits of the crop mode over just cropping into the file when editing? There is a drop in resolution either way right?

Should give higher frame rate and buffer in camera

For me I would say it will also help in composing your "cropped" shot as well (if that makes sense).

I use the SanDisk Extreme 45MBs 16GB, ordered 4 from amazon (directly from them) when they were doing them for just over £10 each.

Honestly can't believe Nikon haven't addressed the buffer issue or at least increased it in line with the new sensor so it provides similar performance. It's two years since the D7000 was launched and the buffer was one of it's most criticised features....surely the cost of memory in that time has come down enough to enable them to increase it's spec?

I agree. Nikon have made a mistake(AGAIN) by not addressing the buffering issue. It is poor on the D7000 at 16mp so it is going to be bad on the D7100 at 24mp. We will be lucky if it can do 3 shots in RAW at 6fps. Once the reviews and tests appear this is the issue that will prove to be it's downfall.

Maybe Nikon now exactly what theyre doing, everyone buys this model as a replacement for the D300S then in 6 month they bring out the true replacement the D400 then we all buy that as well.

Seriously thinking about getting one of these - how quickly do adobe launch raw support for new cameras?
