Nikon D7xxx owners thread

Just an observation - but a week or so ago i became the owner of a new Nikon 24-70 and an initial quick check and further 'live' use of the lens shows no AF fine tune required. A bit odd i thought as all my other lenses (none of them this high grade) all require -10/-12 . Could it be that its just luck that this lens is a perfect match to my d7000 ? or is it something to do with the quality of the 24-70 and the basic factory set-up of the camera. Anyway next week I will also have another expensive lens - 105mm 2.8 micro - so we'll see how that fares out of the box.

I most definitely didn't have to do anything for my 24-70, nor my 70-200...Actually also not my old 18-70 and the original street sweep 24-120...

But the Tamron and Sigma models have been all over the place....The very cheap 35mm f1.8 seems to get a lot of mention as well in this thread as problematic...

My 'Nikon 28-70mm F2.8 was miles out (-11) & although I've now got the camera back from Nikon to fix this (& they have), I think my 70-200mm F2.8 VRII is also still out..

I am very glad Nikon have put this feature on the D7000...

I think it has something to do with where the camera and lens are within their tolerance ranges. I have a 300 f4 that seems to focus perfectly whereas my 70-200 f2.8 vr1 has to be set to -15. Im happy with both now, the minor AF adjustments are there to help.if its beyond the minor adjustment range then you have a problem that needs nikon to fix it.

So far, I have been lucky with all my lenses and even though I have never had to use this feature, I think that its a very important feature.

Famous last words. I was saying 24mm would probably be wide enough, no. Went out for the first time in a long while yesterday (medical reasons) and was actually thinking about what I was doing, ie not pointing and shooting, for once.

This has lead to an realisation that I use the 55 end more as I won't/can't move closer. If I actually need longer the short end of a tele zoom makes far more sense, otherwise start walking. My proverbial photographic mind has been blown. Also my lens plan going forward is in tatters.

Finally ordered a D7000 this evening from Amazon, I've been swithering as I did try one for a few days last year and sent it back but cost wise and performance wise I think it will do everything I want.

Did order the 18-105 kit but I've cancelled and ordered a body only now that I see Amazon had it back in stock as I don't really need the lens.

35mm f1.8G also ordered along with a battery and remote release, will need to decide on further lenses but probably another prime!

If you decide you need that 18-105mm lens, I have a basically pristine one for sale for £110 delivered... just let me know if you fancy it and I'll put up a classified for it :)

If the 18-105 turns up - i'd keep it : less hassle and you may be pleasently surprised - I know i was when i first had mine .

Well I now have two D7000's in the house.... Or with the 18-105 and one body only.... Already decided to send the one with the kit lens back and will use the body with the 35 f1.8G I also ordered..... Looking forward to getting out with it and of course looking for new lens suggestions!

Had the D7000 for a week or so now and I've noticed that I seem to have what appears to be a technique issue - at least I assume it to be.

When I shoot with my favourite lens - 35mm 1.8 prime - the pictures are tending to come out just a little soft. If I shoot with my second favourite lens - the 55-200 3.5-5.6 - the pictures are razor sharp. Using autofocus in both cases - no sharpness issues if I'm manually focussing.

Is it the weight of the body causing my hands to shake slightly? Previously I've only been used to d5100 or Sony A350, so there is a bit of a weight difference. I can only imagine that the physically bigger lens with the 200mm is allowing me to brace better.

For comparison purposes with the same 35mm lens on a d5100 I was able to shoot handheld reliably at anything up to 1/4''. It must be me and not the autofocus is it's just one lens, right?

Does stopping down the 35mm improve things or is it soft at all apertures?

seems to confirm there will never be a D300 replacement now:

not much for us existing D7000 owners - more pixels as with all new cameras, and a few extra focus points. Has a funny new crop/lower quality mood presumably to meet the D300's faster than D7000 frame rate ?

Nikon adds D7100 to top of DX line

NIKON-LOGO_125.jpg Nikon has announced the new flagship of their DX-format HD-SLR lineup.
The D7100 features a 24.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and fast shooting (up to 7 frames per second in 1.3 crop mode). From the back you'll be able to work with your images on a 3.2 inch (8cm) high resolution LCD monitor.

D7100_300.jpgIt will be available starting in March 2013 with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $1599.95 USD with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens or $1199.95 for the body only configuration.

• Compatible with the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter, enabling the user to share images to a supported smartphone or tablet, shoot remotely from their device, and transfer photos from up to 49 feet away.

Unless high noise performance or auto focus speed is dramatically better than the D7000 I see no point upgrading.

Looks good and the 51 point AF would be handy but having just paid £600 for the D7000 I can't see any real reason for me to return it to Amazon (only had it a day) and wait a few weeks to get the d7100, especially if that $1200 simply becomes £1200.......

I'd stay with that you have. The upgrade from a D7000 is FF camera, not the D7100 in my opinion.

:D

I take it your joking?

If the a.f on the D7100 is as good as it should be, this wipes the floor with the D7000. If this justifies paying twice the price is another matter. Will likely drop to around £950 or so within a couple of months of launch the way the D7000 did.

Apart from the terrible buffer on the D7100 and hoping there are no launch issues (unlikely) this is far and away the best spec cropper on the market.

The only good thing for me is, loads of people will buy the D7100 just to say they have it, this will bring down the price of the D7000

Been waiting for a decent DX semi pro model to replace the D300S and this looks to tick all the boxes apart from the physical size im used to, the D7000 was just a toy in the hand and felt way too flimsy and the AF on the D7000 left a lot to be desired, will wait a few month and pick one up for under £1000

Just had an email from wex.

£1199 Body only
£1299 with the kit lens

Available from next month.

Doesn't look like enough of a leap forward to tempt me to change my D7000, which is what I expected to be far.

Suspect it will be a great camera though, the D7000 is already brilliant and these improvements will built on that.

Odd...my email says £1099 body only..

Ah man, just about to pull the trigger on a k5II and get this email from WEX. Not sure if its enough to sway me though as the K5 fits my hand like a glove!

Saying that, the AF system looks good. Ah man, decisions decisions!

DPreview says no low pass filter. Off to investigate the buffer and bracketing....

EDIT
2 to 5 frames in steps of 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 1, 2, or 3 EV

EDIT Buffer:-
NEF (RAW), Lossless compressed, 12-bit - 7
NEF (RAW), Lossless compressed, 14-bit - 6
NEF (RAW), Compressed, 12-bit - 9
NEF (RAW), Compressed, 14-bit - 8

In 14 bit RAW the D7100 has a buffer of 6, the D7000 had 10
In 12 bit RAW the D7100 has a buffer of 10, the D7000 had 15

a 50% drop but need to bear in mind the 50% file size increase which sort of cancels things out
