Try custom settings menu a4 and set to "on". Not tried it myself but seems to be what the manual describes. HTH.

I have set my preview button to preview but it doesn't seem to change anything in the viewfinder, only lights up "AE-L" and makes a noise in the body which sounds a little like the shutter. (I also tried to test it in live view but nothing happened at all) So now I'm confused if I'm using it right.

Just to clarify, in the custom menu, "f4 Assign preview button" is set to "Preview", the dial is set to "M", and I am using the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G.

To see a difference you need to change the aperture from f1.8. The preview button just closes the aperture of the lens to where you have set it and you can see the difference in DOF.

Yippeee, my new 16-85mm lens arrived today, the downside is that I wont get to use it as i'm on night shift all week, boo hoo :bang:
 
Just order my D7000 Excited isn't the word. I ended up using HDEW in the end, it should be with me in 3 - 5 days. :D

I've just ordered a body, still undecided as to whether to buy new or used lenses.

At the moment i thinking a 70 - 300 VR and 35mm 1.8G prime to get me started, will be looking to make a purchase at some point today.

I also need a memory card(s), what would you recommend for the D7000?

The 70-300 VR sells 2nd hand at very cheap prices (to the point I'm considering selling the wife's sigma and making up the difference), the 35mm the difference is so small I'd buy new especially if Nikon are still doing the £20 cash back.

Card wise I'm using 16GB cards mostly which gives about 450 raws according to the counter, so probably more like 480 if my last Nikon is any gauge. Brand wise I'm using Sandisk extreme (45mb/s in 16GB and 30mb/s for my 8GB) or Transcend class 10 (20mb/s). Theres a good deal on 2 16GB sandisk ultra 30mb/s for £15 on mymemory atm I paid barely less than that for 1 16Gb extreme which isn't that much faster.

I get them from Mymemory.co.uk normally. I wouldn't want less than a class 10 as the buffer isn't very big so the faster you can write the better really.
 
Thanks for the reply, yeah the 70 - 300 seem to be competitively priced s/h. Currently eyeing them up in the for sale section.

I agree that for the price difference on the 35 1.8G it makes sense to pay a little more and get a new one.

I'll check the my memory site out thanks :)

Considering the grip AND battery was £42.97 delivered compared to £229.99 grip only (Park Cameras) and £60 for an EN-EL15 (Park Cameras) I thought it was a bargain. I don't know how good the OEM stuff is but for a £230+ saving, I can live with the differences. It does look very good quality. Oh, and I'm not knocking Park, it's the first shop I thought of looking for OEM stuff.

how are you getting on with this? Is it still holding up ok now you've had chance to use it a bit?

Hi Chris.

I took it out again last night when I went for a walk. It's holding up absolutely fine...no issues at all.

Last night was also the longest I've got to have it attached to my Q Strap, swinging off my hip. I checked the grip several times to make sure it wasn't coming unscrewed from the body..stayed on nice and tight, no movement at all. Still not creaky or squeeky! Nothing negative to report at all.:thumbs:

The only one negative is the slow delivery..10/12 days or so. If you can live with that then no worries.

Hmmmm, I own a D5000 currently. Is the jump to a d7000 worth it? Do you benefit much from the increased number of AF? Does the pixel increase show up much?

Is this the best Nikon non full frame camera? that seems to be the view from what ive read so far.

I think i would benefit from the increased fps as i like to do sporty shots. I know i need to test the weight of it as i have a disability so lighter is better but may be worth the change. Only downside i see is the lack of articulated screen which really helps me but maybe a newer version will have this? Perhaps im better off waiting for this?

Bed news everyone. Put my D7000 away with 90% ish battery in the grip. Took it out a day later to fetch the card, battery is dead. Nothing.

Seems I've been nobbled by the issue with knock off grips discharging a battery fast.

Can everyone have a dig down their sofa for me, I need a new, genuine, grip.

edit: phew. It's charging.

I think there is a genuine grip in the classifieds for less than £100 if that's any help?

Got the Email from Nikon that they have my camera on Friday.... Just waiting now for more news. I still have a D70 - but I'm reluctant to get that out - its almost like cheating on your wife.lol
 
When mine went back to Nikon I used my old D40x. I was amazed how simple and small it felt and how far my abilities have come on in such a small space of time.....
 
Re the batteries in grip discharging, I've had this with genuine Nikon grips too, I think there is an issue with the connector between grip and camera as if you remove/add the grip the issue often disappears. Another option of you just need the extra power and not controls is to simply keep the grip switch to locked as this prevents any battery drain .

Thanks. I will try remember to lock it when I put it away. I didn't realise it was an issue with genuine grips also.

I went the same route, d5000 to d7000, told myself I would use both, to save swapping lens when out and about.. But after using the D7000 for a while, I find the D5000 awkward to use and have now "lent" it to my daughter
I never used the flappy screen, and although the D7000 heavier I no longer notice it.

The D7000 is so much better , but the bigger sensor density does mean you have to be more careful as it is very unforgiving of "bad technique".

Now should I got for D800 ... ?:nuts:

I'm sure I've seen plenty of posts recommending the exact setup your talking about on this forum... and used ones seem to go between the low and mid £300's :)
 
I've been using my D7000 quite a bit this week. I'm reslly loving it at the minute and I get quite excited when I suss out how to do something on it! I've had several excitable moments with it this week!

I've swapped the "+" & "-" around on my settings as I feel "-" should be to the left!!
I set my Fn button for the tilt gauge. I also started a photography class 2 weeks ago and my camera has been in "M" mode ever since! Not a big deal to most on here I'm guessing but it is to me!!

REALLY loving my Nikon this week! I've had more fun with the D7000 this week than I did a full year with my D3100.

I did that with the title gauge too... I have a small bubble level in the hotshoe but when you are looking through the viewfinder it's really handy to press the function button and see the level in the viewfinder without looking away and changing the framing of your shot :)
 
D7000 with grip - not used a grip ever before.

Using a Nikon battery in the camera and the same type Nikon battery in the grip.
The grip battery is being used and the camera battery remains static - when the grip battery expires does it automatically switch over to the camera battery or do I need to do anything?

Nope, the camera automatically uses the internal camera battery once the one in the grip has run ok.
The grip is excellent, also has magnesium and weather sealed.
There was one in the classifieds for £95, bargain.

Good to hear mate. I am a bit like you but i have been using A and S, switching between both depending on the shot. Did quite a lot of shooting in the snow when it was around too. I might even be brave enough to post a few!

If using a grip with AA batteries you have to select the battery type you are using, if using a nikon battery you don't have to select anything. This in the custom menu D13 (p220).

You can also select which of the two batteries is used first (custom menu, D14 p221). I always select the grip battery to be used first, this makes sense to me as if I decide to remove the grip I will still have power in the camera battery even if the first battery (ie grip battery) is empty. I can't change the batteries between the camera and the grip as I only use AA batteries in the grip.

I'm not sure if this differs with 3rd party grips but this is what I do with my nikon grip.

Interesting ... menu D13 only offers the option of AA type batteries, presumably the D7000 knows if its a normal camera battery inside the grip?
 
The d7000 must know when you have the Nikon batts cause the battery monitor also shows no of shots which it doesn't when using as batts if I remember correctly.

I've just edited the post above whilst you replied, it does seem the d7000 is able to sense if Nikon battery is used. The selection part applies to the type of AA battery due to the function of the camera (so the manual says). But battery order is selectable by the user.

That's interesting, is that the number in the brackets in bottom right of LCD screen? I've altered the lcd bottom right to show the ISO value, it also shows the ISO value in the bottom right of the viewfinder too. I found it to be a real pain to keep pressing the info button to get an ISO reading (I mainly use auto ISO with the mode set to M). Now its easier to work out if the auto ISO value is too high and I can then alter the shutter or aperture to get a better ISO value before pressing the shutter button. This done in custom menu D3, p216.

You can chose whether it uses the grip battery or camera battery first :)
