Nikon D7xxx owners thread

I struggle to choose between an sb700 and sb910. I would go for 700 because it's cheaper and will suit my needs but I prefer to ask here first. I'm not a pro and I think this can suit my needs.

Thanks a lot in advance.

If cheaper and suits needs, get the 700.

the 800 is not a current model?

I too am debating new flash since busting my sb400 whilst skiing

I've got an SB700 myself, it does everything I ask of it, It's a nice little unit and I wish I had times to make more use of it!

It's a compact little thing too that sits on the D7000 well, not that I've had a 910 on there for a comparison but looking at pictures of them side by side there's a noticeable size difference. I may look at an upgrade in the future but the 910's advantages weren't worth the extra money or bulk when I was buying, or even now a year or more down the line :)

So the 70-200 VRI bs VRII on a DX body there is no IQ difference? There's about £600 in price difference.

The 70-300mm VR seems to be getting good praise for a £399 lens.
May go down the 70-300mm VR route and if I find I need better then decide. :)

Riz :)

I can't say if there is much difference between the IQ, you would have to ask someone who upgraded from the VRI to VRII (and uses DX). I read a quite few reviews of both, the only difference I could see was possibly a newer VR system and no corner/edge sharpness issues (not a problem, dx only uses the centre of the lens). If you are going to use the lens solely on DX and don't plan to go FX then is it really worth £600 extra? I would think part of the price difference is due to vrI being replaced with the vrII so its now not the latest lens. The VRII is always going to best the better lens as its the upgrade, but its doesn't mean older lens are now no good. 2nd hand vrI can be got for £800-950 depending on condition.

The 70-300 vr is stunning for the price, possibly one of nikons best. I'm selling mine at present but I'm seriously thinking about keeping it. When I looked through my photos I had forgot how good it is. For a lens that can be got for less than £300 used (and is fx compatible) its great value. Also it's light and compact too.

The only reason I upgraded to the 70-200 vrI was for faster focusing, a large aperture at the long end (roughly f5.6 to f2.8, increase of 2 stops), takes teleconverters and the tripod collar is also very useful to me.

One thing that stopped me from upgrading the 70-200vr 1 to the vr 2 was focus breathing on the vr2. The ultimate in corner sharpness is not that important on a 70-200 zoom to me, wide lens yes but zoom nah...And even then, it is not like the 70-200vr is a bad lens all of a sudden. It is a superb lens that leaves most others well behind...

I find focus breathing more of an issue than ultimate sharpness in the corners on a zoom. But others may disagree or have a different preference.

I've used the 70-200mm F2.8 VRI for 5 ten day holidays - loaned from my friend as he hardly uses it, says its too heavy.. I liked it a lot.
Last night I collected my secondhand 70-200mm F2.8 VRII ... (paid £1085)
Now I can happily say I was blown away how sharp & fast it is even compared to the VRI..
Can't wait to put lots of pics into this badboy...

Hi,

I opted getting the 70-300mm VR lens.

By the end of next week I should have most of my Nikon gear apart from a bag, flash and some filters :)
The lenses in my setup are as follows:-

12-24mm f4.0
17-55mm f2.8
18-70mm
35mm f1.8
70-300mm f4.5-5.6

Riz :D

So much so he took the photo at 9:50!

Congratulations! - used I assume?

That it is, but apart from the slightly tatty box, you wouldn't know it from the body itself.

It feels like a good, healthy upgrade from the D3100. Many more buttons to play with, and althought it's heavy, the additional height means that I can hold it more comfortably in my right hand. With the D3100, my little finger always ended up supporting the base of the camera.

Now then, time to drool over some of the non AF-S lenses I can now get access to :)

The wait until the end of the month to buy a D7000 is killing me. i dont think i've ever read so much about something i don't actually own :cuckoo:

Could do with holding one just to make sure it feels nice to hold, unfortunately the nearest camera shop with them in stock (WEX) is 65 miles away... i'm seriously considering the trip just to make sure, i'll be spending 1K and i'd like to be certain.

I found the d7000 quite heavy too hold after an hour my wrist was starting to hurt and that was with a light 35mm lens i dread to think what one weighs with a large lens/battery grip etc, but thats the price you pay for a metal body i guess.

Get a black rapid strap; shoot and let it fall by your side until the next shot.

Alternatively do some wrist/forearm exercises ;).

Black rapid or Q Strap.

I have the Q strap and can carry the d7000 all day with a 70-200 f/2.8

I would very much recommend holding a camera and to see if it fits your hands well before buying it. I brought a D300 of eBay great camera the guy showed me some amazing pictures he had taken with it all the reviews online say it's amazing but I found it too big for me. Tried a D7000 out in the shops and only slightly smaller felt so much better in the hand and just as good a camera to me.

What are you spending 1K on? The body is £630 brand new so what lenses are you looking at?

can you not pop into John Lewis to try one?

@ Steve and Milkfloat... The only camera shop we have in colchester is LCE and they only had the 7D. Currys and PC world dont have it in stock and the nearest john lewis is at lakeside. Toying with the idea of driving to the WEX showroom just to make sure.

On a side note.. now my post count is up and i can view the for sale section i'm considering buying my lens(s) second hand, there seems to be a nice selection of well priced lenses. :)

LCE gave me a D7000 body only price of £619 which i thought was pretty good..!

If that is for a new body it is a great price. Or you could go the grey import and save £100 over that.

I'm chopping in my Tamron 18-270 for a 16-85 to go with my new D7000.

Beyond the fab use at the Duxford airshow, I'm really not using the long end enough these days, and the D7000 at least means I have options for AF lenses rather than the motor-equipped choices I was stuck with on the D3100.

I'm eyeing up dropping the D3100 and the Tamron into my local CEX and taking the hit on the cash value as fleabay is a bit of a faff. Exchange value is marginally better but I can't find anything I want to buy in the shop which I can't find cheaper elsewhere....

Thanks for the link, that's an interesting read. :) certainly some food for though.

Edit. That 18 - 200 seems like a great walk about lens, will serious consider getting one to get me started.

i can reccomend the 18-200 on your d7000 as i have it on mine its fantastic

Out of interest how much did they offer you for the lens?

Update on my back focus warranty claim. Excellent service from Nikon, turned around in four working days. Confirmed issue and as well as fixing back focus also fully serviced body, sensor cleaned and latest firmware installed (thought it was !).
Focus now pretty much bob on with all lenses without micro adjust.

Like falling in love all over again :-)

That's great. I'm hoping they receive mine (for the same problem) today.

Hiya,
How do you go about making a claim, mine is still under warranty but I bought it off another member here.

Riz :)

Riz,
Why would you be asking about a warranty claim?
I can categorically tell you that the camera is not front/back focussing.:)
I have many sharp images from it.

Here's one, taken with an 85mm f1.4, and a crop of the shot underneath.

Website states the following, so I'm boxing it up now with a view to taking it into a store later in the week.

Buy: 132
Exchange value: 165

I could probably fetch 200 for it on ebay but then have to go through the faff of the fees etc which clocks in at around 27 pounds.

Excellent, I should have consulted you, only spotted all this talk about focusing :)
I went out yesterday with the 70-300mm VR to take some pictures of horses.
I've got a great deal to learn about the D7000, my last DSLR was the D40 over two years ago.

Riz :)

If you get your post count up to 25, you can sell it on here. I would certainly be interested at around £150, but it would have to be done at in the correct section, either with a For Sale post by you, or a Wanted post by me.
