Nope but I have just ordered the Tamron 24-70G2

I read lots of reviews of both and tbh the sigma wasn’t even a contender. Seems like they dropped the ball a bit with this lens.

Yep - read that too! There primes are great - but art zooma seem a bit of a let down.
 
I'll be leaving that then. Thought it was going to be better than that.
Won't be touching the tamron either. Only leaves the Nikon then. Be looking for a second hand one then soon.

The focus breathing issue was a deal breaker for Tony Northrup and with his high profile would have probably made more of an issue of it than necessary. It would depend how you shoot but for portraiture I can see how it can impact negatively.

It’s odd how Sigma have done so well with their Art primes but not really come up with the core two zooms that pros would use, unless they feel that they wouldn’t impact upon the marque brands. Though they are launching a new Art 70-200 2.8. But it needs to be something special to eat into the Tamron sales.

Not sure if that's so true any more every pro I know has them but most of the wedding and portrait guys I know mostly only use prime lenses. The commercial guys tend to use more specialised lenses depending on the job, the 24-70 especially seems very underused by most maybe it's just a fad.

I knew what I’d put would be a little subjective as there is a new generation of prime users. I would guess sales of the two zooms mentioned would still be higher than the premium zooms (1.4)

I think the 24-70 definitely used to be the go to "wedding lens", but as you say, I hardly know anyone using them for weddings now.

Yes I was expecting more based on the art primes.

Even if the sigma art 70-200 is exceptional it’s only ‘one more’ exceptional lens in a pool of exceptional 70-200 lenses out there!

Nipped into Calumet on my way from town earlier and was chatting to a fella in there about this. The guy in there was saying they hardly sell any 24-70's any more compared to prime lenses between 20-85mm and because of this they never have more than 1-2 in stock at anyone time for Canon and Nikon anyway. They still sell quite a few 70-200's. but there isn't as many prime lenses that cover that focal length. He also said that most of the customers that they get anyway that buy 24-70's aren't professionals.

He was also having a bit of a moan how awful Nikon is with suppliers and that they are in big trouble as a business. It was there open day today and I noticed that Fuji, Canon, and Sony all had reps and there was discounts available on all three but nothing for Nikon, no reps no discounts apart from Nikon fit Sigma gear which was 10% off. To be fair that could me more down to W.E.X's relationship with Nikon.

Interesting perspective from them.

There has been a push of primes this last decade for sure. All my lenses are such apart from the 24-70 which I use primarily for indoor studio work. But it is the unexciting range for many, I don't really get excited by it myself but does a job where flexibility is needed and in the studio aperture range, is as good as anything. I'd agree that many of the 24-70 (or more 24-105) purchasers would be non-pro's that would favour the f4 versions that are now so prevalent. Maybe many that use them would be more landscape biased too? And all of this would explain why Sigma haven't really bothered with a strong 2.8 version recently.
 
Reason I’ve bought a 24-70 is for fast accurate autofocus. I can’t stretch to the expensive Nikon primes and the 1.8 range whilst fantastic in many areas have left me underwhelmed with focus speed and accuracy. It will cover the 24,35,50 range for me and will double up as a landscape lens.

I would do a wedding with a 35/85 combo though.
 
My camera was affected by the shutter recall, I originally purchased via Panamoz, they were great, told me to send to Nikon and they covered postage and paid it without delay.

I received the camera back from Nikon, they replaced the shutter unit and carried out full service and sensor clean at no charge. Panamoz were prepared to cover the bill and I even noted on the repair paperwork work was not to be covered under warranty as it was purchased outside of the UK.

Overall Nikon checked, repaired and returned the camera in just 3 weeks, I was expecting 6-8 weeks minimum.

Just carried out a shutter count test and it is '80', it was 19,000 prior to sending it off. Result i'd say :-)

My 24-70 is the non VR version. It’s plenty sharp enough and like you say, auto focus is superb. I don’t use very often at all, as always favours the primes. But so handy to have in the bag. I took it to recce a landscape project last weekend and ended up snapping the little one. Felt quite cumbersome really.

Service Advisories aren't considered Warranty repairs, so they don't care if it's grey :)

As said already it's a recall not a warranty repair. That shutter count is odd, you'd expect it to either be the same or 0, not 80. Very odd. Add to this that Nikon don't reset the shutter count in the UK as the count shows the overall wear of the camera not the shutter. Anyway, whatever the reason it's a bonus as you say (y).
 
well a trainee cant make more of a mess of my sensor.

ill wonder if they will put a new eye piece on.

Mine came back separated from the camera in the bag and broken into 2 pieces so phoned them up and they are posting a new one out.

Just had mine back today for a warranty, not recall work. As you say, excellent service by Panamoz and overall very pleased with Nikon customer service - door to door in around two weeks.

Cameras come back fully adjusted too - just a shame I now have to calibrate my lenses again :puke:

I see there's one in the classifieds that's just come back reset to 59, so I guess Nikon are now resetting count, didn't on mine last year though.

I specifically asked Nikon about resetting the shutter count and they told me they didn’t for the reasons above. Nothing to say they haven’t had a change of heart of course but why set them at these random numbers? Seems like there may be a ‘glitch’ in their servicing at the mo :confused:
 
I was thinking maybe they reset them now when fitting a new shutter and then fire of a number of test shots to ascertain all is in full working order/carry out adjustments but who knows.

Or it could be test images after new shutter fitted. I'm guessing they check AF is working within tolerance (or should) after replacing the shutter. Interesting they are doing it on some but not all, could pose a problem with knowing if it was high or not when buying used in the future.

Yeah you’re both probably right. 53 and 80 year shots is a lot though imo. I feel sorry for the b****r buying a camera they think is pretty much new when it could have had 50k+ actuations ;)

Don't you just take s picture and look st the file number.

I think the file number can be reset to 0000 in camera (if you mean the file name like DSC_xxxx) so can be out of sync. I usually use:

I've noticed the exif on Flickr under image number is probably right so that's possibly another way.

Interesting one that. I can say that the 1.8g versions are pretty snappy and probably some of the most accurate lenses I have used. The 1.4 versions are definitely slower to focus though.

I like primes, so thinking of getting another 85mm.

I have the 50 and the 85.

The 85 is slower to focus whereas the 50 is very snappy but suffers grossly from focus shift. This has been covered in reviews too as has the 28 which I think your aware of. I’m at the position now where however sharp the 1.8 primes are if they are inaccurate to focus and they are suffering from focus shift then they are very very soft! As in out of focus soft!

I'm fully aware of the focus shift on the 28mm as its reported in a lot of reviews, but never seen it on the 50mm. I find it quite a sharp little thing and don't recall it ever missing focus.

Maybe I have just been lucky with my copies, but the only lens have had softness isses with was the 50mm f1.4g.

Yes the 50 1.4g is some way behind the 50 1.8 g in sharpness at lower apertures. I’ve had two copies of the 50 1.8 and in my ‘focus frustration’ thread in thus forum you’ll see other 50 1.8 users chiming in with the same concerns.

I do however suspect it’s copy dependant but I’m not yet willing to try a third!

Can become a frustration when Nikons QC comes in to it!!! I couldnt get on with the 1.4g, could make a cuppa between minimum and maximum focus distances!
