Nikon D750 & D780

I've started to use the sharpen filter in PS and have found the images pop into life. Lr is a bit pox tbh.

What is high pass filter?
Really, I don't have a clue how to sharpen in PS  :$

I use either high pass in PS or if I just want to sharpen a small area, I'll use Viveza in Nik

LR is pants for output sharpening, period. I always add the default for the first part, but all sharpening is done via PS and there's plenty to suggest you should sharpen initially then for the output/medium required.

High Pass is definitely best for landscape IMO to add that crispness but it's far too easy to over do. Always best to use low but a few passes.

To output for web it's all largely pointless, I've found a high setting far better on a smaller file.

For printing it's far too easy to overdo so I tend to do very little, if any at all. It can appear too 'digital' in my opinion, far too easily.

I have that Nic collection, it automatically loaded itself into LR and PS, best of both worlds.

I agree.

Basically... open image in ACR; do your adjustments, then when you're out of ACR; new layer; filter/other/highpass; slide the radius slider until you can juuuust see the outline of the image; click ok; go over the the layers palette-change "normal" to "overlay;" adjust opacity and fill to your liking.

Once you get the hang of the process it's easy peasy.

I have never really enjoyed LR, but you can easily apply presets with little effort (if your pp skills are a bit rubbish like mine). Then again you can download thousands of actions for Photoshop!

I agree.

Don't forget you can add a layer mask so you can remove areas you don't need. I have mine set on a preset thing so it does all that aymt a click of a button.

You can also change the overlay bit to soft light amd hard light depending on your finishing look you desire

I`ve not got round to understanding layer mask as yet, sooo much to learn with PS and the like.

I struggled for YEARS attempting to understand masks... I've now got it and didn't realise just quite how easy it can be... I'll pm you how I do it later on as I'm just about to go out, but it's not as complicated as you think :)

As you've asked so nicely Steve...

very very simple (and possibly not the 'correct' way of doing stuff) but it works for me!!!
1. open your image that you want to make adjustments on
2. cmd + J to duplicate the layer
3. on the uppermost layer (the one you've just created) apply whatever effect you want - this will apply the effect to the whole image
4. this is the layer mask bit.... click on the rectangle with the circle in it at the bottom of the layers pallet - should be at the very bottom of PS on the RHS - it's on the same row as the trashcan.
5. hit 'B' to activate your brush tool (and change size, softness, opacity etc and shape at this point if you want to)
6. on the far left there is a vertical tool bar - click on the tiny squares that are black and white (not the larger ones next to them) this will turn your brush into black or white
7. I can never remember which hides and which reveals - paint anywhere on your image with whichever brush comes up (black or white), if the effect you've applied gets brushed away, you've got the right colour brush, if not click on the right angled arrows just above the larger black & white squares to swap them (from black to white or white to black), and bingo - add and remove the effect as you like - and if you make a mistake, swap the colour back and you can reapply it!

Easy!

Let me know if this helps :)

And as I said, it may not be the correct way (and there are normally loads of different ways in PS) but this is the simplest way I've found and it works for me...

You can also do it so the effect gets brushed in, just hold down ALT when opening your layer mask, and cmd + I to invert it

Thanks! It looks familiar actually, but I've become very lazy and just chuck everything through Lr, so it's good to brush up on Ps.

It's taken me years to get fairly proficient with PS. My advice is to keep watching tutorials. I used to watch Phlearn all the time and buy magazines with tutorials in the early days. There's still loads that I've not quite got to grips with but the basic concepts are relatively easy to grasp an understanding of.

That said, I don't have the time to faff too much and so only dip into PS for specific purposes on occasion. For the most part, LR is good enough for 95% of what's needed.

Maybe I have got better with PP, but I find the 750 files so easy to work with. I used to struggle with my older cameras at times but could just be practice I guess. Hoping when I get a laptop I can practice a bit more. One recommendation I would make is the use of a tablet over a mouse. I find PS so much easier with the tablet for painting and making selections.

This.

I dusted mine off yesterday to have a play and it's so much better with the pen/tablet combo.

shift x on pc switches between the black and white on the mask

Ha, I had a go, think i`m going wrong somewhere, nothing new though with me lol
I`ll have to give it a go again when I`m not so tired.
Thanks M for your input/help

I've not been able to do anything this week other than try get the perfect expression at bath time, harder than you may think! The setup is an on camera flash bounced off the wall behind and used as commander for another behind to give the bubbles a little sparkle. The flash is ramped up a bit to kill the spotlights in the bathroom. What's also interesting is that the first one was earlier in the week where I was bouncing the second flash from behind; the other two were with a stolen on which has given these a slightly warmer appearance.

They are long, aren't they ha! Problem with lots of bubbles is that they obscure the eyes so becomes very much more Miss, than hit. I'll probably continue to have a go the odd night this week.

The sun shone again today and I made a discovery. Although my 28-300 is pretty sharp at close range it's not as good with distant objects at 300mm as my 70-200 with or without a tc. Sob.

There was some nice light today though.

Anyone using/used a Tamron 28-75 on the D750? Think I want to get a cheapish light zoom to chuck in the bag. It's either this or the 24-85.

Looking at longer lenses now to top off my lens collection, does any one have experience of the following
Sigma 50-500mm f4.5-6.3, this is just over £500 used from a top used photo gear specialist shop.
Also looking at this
Nikon AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR Lens
Or maybe wait a bit longer and look at the new Sigma 150-600 contemporary, hope to be a bit 'richer' by then!!!

Sorry no, but I have just looked on ebay and the price is very reasonable.
