Nikon D750 & D780

FB_IMG_1482907216681.jpegFB_IMG_1482907174829.jpeg

A massive learning curve for me yesterday. Not quiet what I wanted to happen as they had changed it since I'd last been there.

Not a lot of room to wonder about and some drives were split over 2 areas so made it difficult to move about.
Had a good day thou in the sunshine.

Lovely shot, Anirban. What does 'Light was Westcott' mean? Admittedly I know just a little jargon, but that one has me flummoxed! :runaway:

Edit - nevermind, I think the Christmas hangover is still wearing off!

Thanks, Steve. They had a constant light and a large eye lighter at the Westcott booth.

Does anyone other than Nikon themselves handle service advisory repairs?

Both my bodies are affected by the shutter shade issue, and as I don't have any weddings for a couple of months I thought I'd take this time to send them back.

But after Nikon balls up the AF on my last one...

I have said it before, and so I shall say it here again: kudos to all wedding snappers, it's hard work! I think overall, I'm happy with what I have got. There were so many things that were flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants stuff because it was so casual and loose. Everyone (Bride, daughter, dad) had been really poorly over Christmas and so two days prior, it wasn't going to happen.

Things I learnt / experienced:

Video people can be a right PITA! He only got booked 4 days prior and was, let's just say, tacky. Wanted to dictate everything; got the best spots for certain parts; was a bit too bolshy, so I just rolled with it..

When you can't move in a ceremony, there's not much variation, so I ended up with the 24-70 to give me that.

Disappointed with the first dance, again, too loose. I had planned to set up a brolly and flash opposite but it got announced, out of nowhere, earlier than planned, so plan B was a flash in my back pocket.

Experienced a flash overheat for the first time on me during the best mans speech, towards the end. Wasn't a deal breaker and wasn't machine gunning either, I got by.

When you're bouncing your flash off the ceiling, glitter balls don't help things.

Arranging groups was always going to be fun, especially in the cold. You need everyone to buy into what you're trying to do, some were just awkward, so certainly something to think about.

I do fancy maybe doing some further stuff, so might put it out there to see if I can get some second shooting work next summer. There's only one way to improve. Have downloaded everything, just running a couple of back ups and should get stuck into it tomorrow. Of course, I have picked my fave and processed that, but I shall post a few up in a couple of weeks time when the B&G have seen them.

well my first wedding with D750 recently was a bust. Fortunately no one was relying on me and as things progressed I took less shots seeing I was there as a guest. Stupidly I realise now I didn't have my user preset correct and was shooting aperture priority the whole time, which may be fine for static group shots, but when you are in a dimly lit venue it doesn't work too well. almost all my shots where therefore well exposed with blurry subjects, ISO around 1600 was giving me 1/8s and slower :( And yes I probably should have used shutter priority, bumped up the iso and flash or all of those....but in my quest to be unobtrusive and be a part of what was going on I didn't really end up with any decent shots at all. You live and learn as they say!

Aperture priority, auto ISO and minimum shutter speed are your friend

This.

I tend to set my min shutter speed to 1/125 (some go as high as 1/250) and auto ISO set to max. You can also rely on doing it manually, i.e.set your aperture and shutter to the bottom limits that you think you'll get away with in manual and use auto ISO to jack updown, this way the camera will pick the appropriate ISO. Mostly indoors, I usually have exposure comp at -0.7 too.

If you're using flash indoors as fill for a subject, I tend to use the formula: 800 ISO, 1/60, f/2.8, with flash on TTL and tweak the flash compensation to suit, if you're running and gunning. I have this set up on U2.

yep. or that. I didn't have auto ISO or minimum shutter speed set. I've got too used to taking shots of static subjects.I'll say it again, you live and learn!

Out of interest, what would you guys set your minimum shutter speed to for this?

I use 1/250th to avoid any motion blur if people are moving, but I might be being over cautious

I use a variation of this, I use manual with Auto ISO and set shutter speed to 1/100 (may tweak it depending such as the dance)). Also remember when using flash auto ISO only changes by a couple of stops so I tend to set it to 400 or 800 so it can go up to 1600/3200 respectively.

How often do you guys find yourself above 6400 ISO with that high a shutter speed? Are you happy with the output? Personally I don't like topping out above 6400 and rarely see many movement issues, but you all do more than I.

Never!

I'm always in control of my ISO selecting the lowest I can get away with for the subject / condition. Whilst I'll often shoot in 'S' or 'A' mode Auto ISO is firmly turned off. I prefer a quality image over noise and would rather use a flash or tripod if need be.

Now and again I shoot at 12800 if in a dark environment and need to keep shutter reasonably high. If you get the exposure right noise isn't too bad and I'd rather have a slightly noisy image than a blurred one. I also prefer slight noise over direct flash.
