Nikon D750 & D780

There's about 100 threads on Overclockers with rookies asking what Mac to buy a few years back.

Best one was when he bought a MacBook and asked whether it was worth upgrading to a MacBook Pro - everyone told him not to do it but he did it anyway!

Bringing back the pass just grow up

Am I asking which to buy right now? No!!!!

Only said was thinking trying Windows

@rookies get the 27" 5k iMac, upgrade to the 500gb SSD/flash drive and buy yourself a 2tb external drive to store all your non essential stuff (ie keep all the programs an current files you're using on the SSD).

No point looking at any other Mac IMO. Make sure you buy a monitor calibration though as they crush the shadows otherwise.

And where would I store photos on the external like I currently do?

Re the shadows ,are you referring to the 5k mac or all in general and do
you have a calibrator recommendation?

Well I only have experience with a late 2011 hi-res (non retina) Macbook Pro and the 5k iMac. The Macbook pro doesn't crush blacks/shadows but the iMac did, had to set the iMac to Gamma 2.0 rather than 2.2 too. Keep toying to upgrade my MBP to the retina version, not sure if that'll crush blacks/shadows too.

But you should always calibrate your monitor anyway so no big deal either way. I use the x-rite i1display Pro, works well for me.

Well it's up to the individual. The only reason I didn't upgrade to a 1TB SSD is that apple completely rip you off, £640 to upgrade  You can buy 1TB SSD drives for just over £300 now  You can't replace the hard drive on Macs anymore (without voiding warranty), but at least RAM is still user replaceable so I bought 32GB RAM from crucial.

I have all my applications and working files on the SSD (including recent RAW files). All exported jpegs go onto an external drive, and all RAWs I'm done with go onto an external drive. If you've not used the external drive for a while it does take about a second or so to 'wake back up' but as I rarely access the external drive it's not really an issue tbh. YMMV

Do the calibrators do all the work for you or do they still rely on your input?

1TB SSDs can be had for under £200 now. Good ol Apple pricing.

What is your backup strategy for your data when using external drives for data storage? I have seen far too many cases where drives have failed (retired IT manager) to rely on a single copy of my data, personally I always try to have 3 copies.

I always have Time machine back up and another back up for the external drive. But I also have another back up for my MacBook Pro, plus time machine backups so probably have about 5 backups in total

Sorry to drag the conversation back to cameras and lenses

As some of you may have gleaned I really miss my only 135L - well it seems Samyang do a 135 f2 - great news but... (why does there always have to be a but?) - its manual focus.

I'm going to try setting the 70-200 2.8 to manual and 2.8 which is the closest I can get to try, but do you guys have any tips for a Mr Magoo trying to shoot with manual focus? Especially given I tend to shoot my kids who generally don;t stay still!

The cheek!!

Nikon 135 DC?

Yeah, but I'm not that drawn to the Nikon version - mostly due to the price and it not being optically as good as the Samyang from what I've seen - especially with CA and contrast.

I have found theres a version with an AE chip which means at least theres a focus dot to work with.

I thought this forum was for those fortunate enough to own a D750 having satisfied their GAS, and for those who aspire to own one . I didn't realise it was for people who actually want to use them ;)
lol I've had mine since sunday and I'm still reading the manual ,not even attached the lens yet :)

what about the 105 John?

Sorry, you're doing what reading the *** - no, nope I can't make out that word, man-u-what? ;)

Edit: Isn't the 105 a 2.8? I have a special place in my heart for the 135, anything other than that and I'll just use the 70-200 2.8 - thanks though.

Yeah, don't. Just buy the DC, it's the s***.

if i take a shot of washing hanging out on a sunny day and the tee shirts look slightly grey/blue (slightly) instead of white apart from changing the washing powder what settings if any do i need to look at or is it just that there is blueish light there and i can't see it?
Just realised it was because i took the hi lights down too much in post:oops: :$

John what is it about the 135 that is special?

I don't know its just something about the compression and the subject separation that I really love.
When I had my Canon 5D3 - I took 7844 images of those 2133 were with the 135L - heres just one (sorry BTW not D750 in any way at all!!), now bear in mind that its not processed that well and I'm just someone with a camera messing about - imagine what it can do in the hands of someone whos actually good!

You are not the only one. I fancy the Samyang as well and after seeing some reviews and images I am impressed. Capturing something in motion or running kids with the samyang is not going to work. May work with adults for some nice portraits. I have seen some amazing images taken with the samyang and the 3d effect is excellent. I might buy one as it is nit that expensive. The manual focus is holding me.

The Nikon 135mm f2 is a stunning lens from what I've seen. The way it renders is beautiful.

Cheerd David, going to take me a while to get to grips with it all but i feel positive i will still have this camera a year from now :)

Oh, if anyone does think about the Samyang 135 - have a look here (link) - theres also a video near the bottom.

I'm still not sure - manual focus would be a serious challenge

Talking about TCs, has anyone any experience of using a D750 with a Sigma 1.4 TC & their 150-600 contemporary zoom? I am still undecided between that and the Nikon 200-500 with a Nikon 1.4 TC?

Well I had a crack at manual focusing and it doesn't seem that bad as long as they're not rushing about - oh and a trampoline net doesn't help!!!

DSC_3231.jpg

Theres a quick snap indoor - granted on f3.2 because I forgot to change it - and another outside that I quite liked anyway so processed :)
