Just got the 24-120mm myself. Can't fault the sharpness, not a million miles away from my 50mm f1.8G.

I'm hoping it is a nice general lens. I am used to a 17-70 on my D7000 so this should do a similar job. Bought a 16-35 f4 off here last week and already have a 70-200 vr2, 105 f2.8 and sigma 150-500.
 
So what's people's thoughts on the 50mm f1.4 as a cheap mans 58mm? Is it too clinical?

(Yes I know about the Sigma Art but that's nearly double the cost ;))

Nice lens line up there (y) Yep will do a similar job, obviously a bit wider and a bit longer so even better scope, plus will give you a stop shallower DOF at the long end. It's not in the same league as the 70-200 obviously, but a really good general lens :)

Thought the 85mm 1.8 was the poor man's 58? :p

I have a 50 1.4 im going to sell. Bought it here a couple of years ago and lightroom only shows around 200 shots taken with it.

@rookies Glad you got your lens sorted, even though it did take up approx 50 pages...any reason why you bought that lens? Have you thought about a monopod for the zoo?? Also what happens if it rains?

Rain isn't as issue with the D750/70-200mm f2.8 combo :p

I find monopods more of a hindrance than a help at wildlife parks. Of course Rookies' MMV ;)

One of the reasons I bought my 24-85 was seeing some of the results of your photos

The one I had (G) was pretty sharp wide open, and it does have nice bokeh. I just not overly keen on the focal length tbh.
 
I'm so happy for you @rookies, funnily enough I was poking round my private mail earlier and found that one where you were asking about that Sigma 70-200 2.8 I was selling on canon, in April 2014!

Seeing as you guys have had approx 100 pages of what lens scenarios :LOL::LOL:.......... Couple of questions hoping you guys can help out with.

1) At present my main lens is the Nikon 24-85mm and a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 for portraits. I also have a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 pretty much sitting in the bag gathering dust. Am thinking of selling both the 35 and the 24-85, and possibly upgrade to either the Nikon 24-120 or Tamron 24-70. Is it a worthwhile upgrade or should I take Gaviscon and let the gas settle? Mainly shoot family pics at home, park and stuff. The Nikon appeals to me for the extra reach, likewise the Tamron for the 2.8.

2) Does anyone use Reikan FoCal for their lens calibration? Have never calibrated any of my lenses before and was thinking of purchasing the software.

To answer a few questions on here..

Reason I went for the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII is I though sod it get it and be done with and knowing it one of the best lens. I will know I won't been to upgrade it for a while maybe not at all..

Yes I've already a Monopod that that ok.

How good is the D750 with a weather seal lens in the rain then anyone done it. I notice quite of the Nikon lens are sealed

I would say @minnnt would be the best person to ask, mate. His one has been covered in welsh gasm enough times ;) Just be careful cleaning it. I`ve been out in normal rain without issue, but nothing super heavy.
 
Happy St Patrick's day from everyone in Northern Ireland. Wonder do they take it as a holiday in Hong Kong, wondering when my D750 will be winging it's way here:p:p

1) have you thought about keeping the 24-85 and ditching the rest to go 70-200? You`ll be pretty much covered that route.

2) I tried it with my D700, and they didn`t work well together at all. Also Nikon won`t (or wouldn`t) let focal adjust, you had to do that bit. CS was crap too IMO. Try the dot tune method.

This is pretty much what I've done but include a 50mm 1.8
 
@saul1 I used FoCal when it was very new and didn't much get on with it, that said there are a fair few people that think it's great, have a poke around in search as I know there is at least one thread on here about it.

As for the lenses it's a tough one, I got my 35mm specifically for times like Christmas when it's indoor and dimly lit, now I do rate the 24-120 as it's a good all-rounder and that extra reach really does come in handy, but at f4 it doesn't separate the subject from the background as much as I'd personally like.
 
The sealing is pretty good. My D750 and 24-70 spent a full day in the rain (heavy rain just to add!!) with rocks and mud being thrown at it during the WRC last November. No issues what so ever. My mates 5d3 turned itself off and had a card error due to the weather.

I just tried the dot tune method out of interest, seemed to work OK. I found it better though just to shoot the test chart at different MA's and see which gave the sharpest results ;) Results were pretty much the same doing it this was as my old tried and tested method so pretty confident they're set right as I got the same result from two tests (y)
 
This thread is now back to discussing D750 and other usual stuff :rolleyes:. I have not done any tuning yet, but will use the Dot tune method for the 85 F1.8G and the 70-200 2.8 soon.
