So then... wedding day. How on earth do you take all you stuff? I'm just someone who likes to fanny around with a camera but i seem to be taking so much stuff with me. I feel like I'm moving house! Pretty sure i won't use a quarter of it but you can guarantee that if i leave it at home i will need it!

I think I'm set on running without flash for the prep but things could change. :LOL: There is going to be a firework display, magician and also (rather randomly!) some casino tables there so it should make for some decent shots hopefully. We delivered the wedding cake last night and it is all decked out for Christmas too!

My last wedding was all done with a D600, 28-75 and sb700 lol. Rest of kit just got left in bag.

But would probably be trying primes if I did it again!

looking at some of your shot your have posted David, I wouldn't worry, you are a well capable photographer with a great eye. When I used to shoot weddings I would do it with just a D200 & D100 and a 24-120 F3.5-5.6 (you know that one that is supposed to be one of Nikon's worst ever lenses), a 50mm F1.8, a Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6 and a SB-80DX speedlight. All pretty basic equipment and not even comparable to today's equipment, and over about 80 weddings never once had any comments on the quality of the resulting images.

Indeed when I look back on my own wedding images in our album from the early 90's, shot on film (no digital at the time, think the photographer used a range finder Contax), even the images form the lowly 6mp D100 looked much sharper and clearer. You will find yourself getting into a "groove", and once you have the first dozen or so shots under your belt, your confidence in your ability and your equipment will grow, and you pretty much go into automatic mode, then wonder where the day went.

Just make sure your batteries are charged (with spares), plenty of memory cards (formatted), and as you say, a backup body just in case the worst ever happens. Though I never really needed my second body as a backup in all the time I did weddings, I eventually gave it to the wife with a 70-300, and she had a great eye for capturing little candids whilst I was busy on the main shots, and it was surprising how many of the these "grab" shots from a non photographer made it into the albums.

Enjoy the day and experience and trust in your own capabilities and you will be just fine I'm sure bud.

2 bodies, 3 primes. Done.
 
Tamron 35mm/45mm are £499 at SRS for black Friday. Makes them £100 more than the Nikon 35mm which I guess is pretty much what I expected.
 
For weddings I generally have the 24-70 on the d750 with an 85mm or 16-35 on the d700.
 
Oh, and a few bottles of water. We call it the wedding hangover, dehydration is a killer the next day.

Detail at higher ISO levels still amazes me. I remember the grain iso800 used to give!

Well done :) I did it once and vowed never to do it again!! Too stressful lol
 
I wasn't too stressed, just constantly on the go all day. Being close family made it a far better experience for me. I think i would have felt pretty awkward if i didn't know anyone. What got me was the sheer lack of time to take the shots I wanted to. I'd been looking at a few wedding togs websites for a few days previous including our own @decigallen but in the end the day (light!) just disappeared and it left little time for anything really. Shame. I've said i will do a 'post-wedding' shoot with them and their kids so hopefully this will enable me to try a few shots i ideally wanted to on the day.

I'll leave you with a quick shot of the first dance... Only another 1200 pics to look through... o_O

It won't be. Slower shutter to catch the ambient from the lights on the dance floor and OCF to freeze the couple.

Wouldn't say it's very different though if I'm honest. Very common for dance floor shots these days.

Ahh, I wondering how you froze the couple with such a slow shutter. Tricks of the trade eh? Useful technique, will try it myself now I know (y)

Its called rear curtain sync flash. Look in your camera flash options, its there.
 
Sounds like you had fun mate. Look forward to seeing the rest. I really enjoyed the few I have done, until I realised I had 1000+ images to sort :( the last time was much easier as my workflow is better these days but it's still the part of it all that puts me off. Workflow is everything!

Yeah, I 'did' know about that thanks but not seen it done like this before. Plus to be quite honest it was something I'd forgotten about, you know my memory ;) and so after I'd thought about what UaeExile and minnt said I was like :facepalm::oops: :$

A regular type of shot m8, but it's certainly got your creative "Hallmark" on it. Great framing and effect and "Hey It Really Works Well".(y)

The speedlight may not have seen the pop up. And you look like a bell end using a pop up aswell. :D

The dancefloor was tiny so there wasn't much scope for doing much else unfortunately. At least i got something which was useable.

My personal preference is to not use rear curtain sync, but rather front curtain. Means I get the action I'm seeing at that split second.

Try setting your flash zoom to 200mm when using slow sync flash and you'll get a nice vignette which helps draw focus to the centre of the frame.

Good work, David! Glad you had a relatively stress free day - It doesn't get better than that.
