Nikon D750 & D780

Trusty D750 getting a look out at the worlds biggest Oil and Gas conference today... :)

I have had the 35 F2 since the summer and think it is a very underrated lens. It usually gets ignored as is always up against the Sigma 1.4 and Nikon 35 1.8 but it transforms the D750 into a super light weight set-up and the quality of images from it can't be beat for the price.
:agree:

It's not long been delivered. Wex had it listed as a 9 in there description and to me it's mint and I'm fussy with my gear. It came boxed with all paperwork etc...........This is the third lens I have bought from them, and from their descriptions they are under scoring them. Well pleased.

Had a quick play but the weather is crap here , but having looked at the images it sharpens up nicely at f2.8...... IIRC when I had my last one it was f4 on the D7000. Forgotten how small and light it is, which is great for me.

Just so your aware, they are a HK based company, but may have a UK distribution centre? If you look at their contacts section it's listed as >

Kei Chuen Lee
Unit P, 8/F, Block III, Camelpaint Building, 60 Hoi Yuen Road
Kwun Tong
Hong Kong

Thanks for that, don't mind waiting as I don't have a camera yet, but fingers crossed no vat etc as it says uk

I can get the 50mm F1.8G brand new imported from India at £80-£85 with genuine Nikon 2 year warranty(India) and 1 year International warranty. I had this lens before and used it briefly on the D600. Wide open, it was not that sharp, but nice at F2.2 onwards and at F4 and F5.6 it was very sharp.

How many of you are using the 50mm often? Might pick one up later as it is quite cheap for me to source one.

If you add the relevant customs and handling thats about £115. For the money its a no brainer. I have the Sigma 50 ART, I prefer it but its a heavy and much more expensive beast.

I can ask someone from our office in India to get it for me at £80 only without paying any charges. I am not able to decide between the 50 and the 35. The 35 is almost 3 times more expensive

Do they work for HMRC or have they agreed to pay taxes for you if the item gets stopped? Use your zoom and set it at 35 or 50.

£80 on single item imported falls under the customs min value before they tax you. Anyone from India can get me that as a gift with a proper receipt. That is how I understand, but may be I am wrong?. I go to India every year and I think I can bring in goods up to £390 without paying customs.

It is not just about the focal length as I can check it with my 24-85 in the way you suggested. I am torn between the rendering of images at wider apertures. It is about a particular character a lens adds to the image.

For business purchases, import duty is NOT charged if:
  • The total order is worth £135 or less.
  • The total amount of import duty due is less than £9.
And then for VAT (20%) – it is NOT charged for any import worth less than £15 with the exception of tobacco, alcohol and perfumes – for which VAT is always payable, regardless of the order amount.

So that’s it – those are the minimum thresholds for paying VAT and duty on orders from outside the EU – £135 for import duty and £15 for VAT.

Hmmm... this is interesting. So, you are saying even if I can import it free I need to pay VAT on £80?

When I read the page below, does it mean that if I am importing (say on return after vacation in India) I can bring anything under £390 and still may have to pay VAT?

My knowledge is limited as I never imported electronic stuff before and appreciate some clarification.

Yes, thats correct. You as the receiver are liable, this is my understanding. There will also be a £8 handling fee from Royal mail. This all depends on if your parcel gets stopped by customs on the way in or if relevant charges are paid by the sender. If everything was done above board all in it should cost what I suggested plus delivery charges.

How does it compare IQ wise to the 35 1.8? Looks nice and small and compact!

@JJ! the the main reason I got it was because it small and compact forcing me to just pick up the D750 more often as the only lens I had perviously attached was the 24-70 at the time.

I have not had the 35mm 1.8 but looked through flickr to see what others had captured and liked what I saw.

I do have an itch to get the 70-200 and go 24-70 & 70-200 so may sell off my 35mm F2D and 85mm 1.8 but may miss the super light set-up.

And look what made the front page in our national newspaper. Prefer mine :D

Colour for me also.

Maybe of some use to LR users. While discussing my Red Kite images as posted on last page here and in the Bird section, Bill mentioned a LR plug-in to show the focus point in LR. I used to use this when using Nikon PP software in the past and have missed it from LR. I found it useful, so maybe of some of you here will. Only works in Library mode though.

Download and operating instruction in link.

Nice shot @anibap , my preference would be for the mono presentation but I feel it could do with a bit more PP work to lift the dark areas, and then just a general brighten up.(y)

Thanks for that. Just downloaded and had a look. That's a very useful tool. I'm surprised to see how many shots where the focal point wasn't where I thought it was.

I have only had a quick play myself, for me with bird photography when I look at the camera screen it looks as if I have nailed focus when looking at a 3" screen, but when viewed on a 24" monitor it shows I have missed, so it seems to be a handy tool to have.

Just back from an awesome long weekend in the Isle of Skye - Haven't been through all my images so far but here's a couple to start with . Fair to say I love my 750

Sligachan sunset by Chris Marr, on Flickr

Stormy Neist by Chris Marr, on Flickr

Two great shots Chris, my fav' would be #1. Really like the tog silhouetted against the fiery sky and for me just about the right amount of movement in the water.(y)

George.

I see a lot of love for the 85/1.8 in this thread. I keep trying to join the love-in but it remains the most useless lens I own (either too long or not long enough and doesn't focus close enough for me) so wondering if it's worth selling on. What do they fetch (I won't say used because it hardly has been) pre-owned? If it's not a lot I might as well hang on in case I need a paperweight.:D
