Nikon D750 & D780

If anyone wants me tomorrow I'll be camped behind the front door.....
I generally stand at the window peeping out........,

Nice shot Anibap, with some good composition and colour.(y)

"Maybe a slight lift to the shadows would improve it a bit and brighten up the bottom left area and bring out some of the detail that is there".

Agree with you George, but I shot it handheld and it was underexposed. It took some beating on processing, anything above this at ISO 8000, it was not looking good. I felt the contrast between the dark but slightly lit sky and the dark black portion on the left looks good. If i would have shot it with tripod at 100, I could have played with bit of raw latitude.

:) . Lesson learnt for me is, use the bloody tripod and not just carry it. I realised that I shot several frames where tripod could have helped immensely.

One more thing I never tried is exposure bracketing and blending. May be some day...

I can relax lol theyve sent me a time slot
If you are anything like me, anticipation will cause you lack of sleep!! ..........and.will the weather allow me to sneak out for a little try over christmas holiday. Well I hope it does for you!
Enjoy the holiday.

Finally Ive had a chance to actually look at my new D750 (chaotic household at the minute with 3 dogs one a new puppy) As I said very pleased with the build quality. Updated firmware and I really like the menus etc. Everything I like and use seems to be to hand. Nothing Ive thought "oh I prefered that on my Canon" so all good at the minute. Hopefully get out soon to actually use it lol

Wait till you see the files it produces ;)

What's the general consensus on the firmware update released a few weeks ago? haven't updated my camera yet and thought of checking before I do it.

Did it, cant say Ive noticed any difference... yet. Everything works as it should.

I think it was aimed more towards the video side of things.
Interested in these for still pics
  • Optimal vibration reduction is now available with vibration reduction lenses - have two lenses with VR
  • The brightness of the live view photography display would not change when a command dial was rotated to adjust exposure compensation with On (Auto reset) selected for b Metering/exposure > b3 Easy exposure compensation > Easy exposure compensation in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU
  • File numbers were not assigned in the proper sequence.

Forgot about this update, maybe I'll get around to doing it over Christmas.

I did the update yesterday mainly for the "Optimal vibration reduction". I haven't noticed any changes.

The high ISO / low noise on the D750 is still taking me surprise. I went out early this morning to try for some more star trail photos but cloud stopped play. On the way back in the car, I noticed a shape fly in front of the headlights. I stopped, backed up and saw the chap below. Handheld out of the car window. 24 - 120 f4. ISO 51200
Not a great shot at all of course but I'm amazed it picked up anything at all.

Might not be the best shot in the world BUT I'm not sure you'd have got anything useable 10 years ago.

Just picked up a 24-70 from the classifieds. Not got any weddings for a while but hopefully get to try it out over the holidays!

It might even rekindle my landscape work if I can get up early enough for the best light.

Noce shots, boys. Light looks delicious. Shame i was at work!

Bracketing is a doddle but i am using Lr CC. Take you shots (i find 5/7 best) then select them and let Lr do its thing. Pretty much the same with the panorama feature really. It's a great addition imo.

Great shots. How do you go about processing the 2nd shot? I tried for a similar photo yesterday morning but couldn't get the bracketing right at all. I was using the Enfuse plug-in for LR5.

Edit: This is the best shot I got I think.

Thanks. Simple processing in LR, the only 'special' editing was the use of radial filters to accentuate highlight areas. These were single shots actually as were taken handheld, hence the slightly higher than normal ISO. I did have a 3 stop grad filter on though, but as you can see it still wasn't strong enough for the sun in 2.

I really like your pic, I love these misty shots of the valley.

Thanks for that (y) LR5 doesn't appear to have that facility. I have been experimenting in between rain showers and think I've got to the root of it. Out of a 5 shot run, the last two were the same settings. The camera was maxed out and couldn't give me the -EV side of the bracket set. Getting up at 0400 to catch some photos clearly doesn't do my thinking processes any good at all

Thank you. I have some old Cokin P filters somewhere that I had forgotten about. I might have to do some experimenting next time I am out and the Sun makes an appearance. I wish I lived in an area with landscape like that. Having spent a bit of time near Great Hucklow (at the gliding club), I miss it - it really is a stunning area.

Maxed out at what settings, Lee? I really like your shot, a great one for your portfolio!

No idea how the plugin works that you mentioned, but it must work similarly. I used to shoot 3 shot brackets at a stop apart but thanks to @snerkler i now shoot 5/7 shots. Never had it max out on me.

Thanks (y) It was on shutter speed. I don't recall the rest of the settings but I must have had the aperture too open or the ISO too high to cater for the whole set. Something to pay closer attention too next time.

and 4am is a great time of day to get up. It's what can make or break a shot!
I agree. Although getting up at 4am and thinking proved to be too much on this occasion :D
