Yes
Since getting a longer lens which requires left-hand support I'm finding the position of the AF-mode button a royal PITA. I've already re-assigned the video record button to allow me to change ISO settings with my right-hand which has helped a lot shooting wildlife, but I can't see any way to re-assign either the Pv or Fn buttons to replicate the AF-mode button so I can change settings with my right hand.

Can anyone confirm if this is possible? Or how do you work around this?

Yes, it can be done. I think it's custom settings menu f2 or f3 and you assign AF-ON to whichever button you want.

I don't think AF-ON is the same as autofocus mode. It is AF activation?
I stand to be corrected.
I too would welcome being able to re-assign to a RH button.

That's not what I'm looking to do, I've got the AE-L/AF-L button set to AF-ON for BBF. I'm looking to be able to switch between AF modes using a programmable button which doesn't seem to be possible with the D750..

I'm not sure, but I'll definitely let you know if I find out if it can/can't be done! ;)

Ah OK. Thought I was being a bit smart knowing this on my 2 week old camera :D

If you're using BBF why do you need to change modes?

Not sure if it's possible to reassign the AF mode button. Could you set up U1 and U2 in the different AF modes (I'm guessing you are wanting to swap AF area size/type rather than AF-S/AF-C) and swap quickly by turning the top left mode dial? This way would only give you two different area settings.

You'd think it'd be reasonably simple! I'm sure I'm not the only person wanting to configure this. It's certainly configurable on a D500. A friend has this configured and it makes life a lot easier with a long lens

Edit: This may be deliberate on Nikon's part. Where's the incentive for them to make the ergonomics on the consumer bodies as good as the pro body ergononics?!

It is AF area I'm looking to be able to change and not AF mode. I based the thread title on the name of the AF-Mode button in the manual which may have been slightly misleading as it's the area I'm looking to be able to change with my right hand. I always use AF-C for wildlife, but it'd be useful to be able to configure Pv/Fn to change between say single point and group areas without having to re-adjust my left hand grip on the lens. The AF-Mode button is bloody hard to get to when you're using a longer/heavier lens!

I'm not sure it is either from the look of it..It is as you correctly deduced the AF area I'm looking to change.. Seems the thread title may have been slightly misleading! I did consider setting U1/U2 which would potentially improve the speed of making the change, but would still need to be changed left-handed which is easier said than done when hand-holding using the 200-500! :(

Can't say I ever found it an issue tbh, but I can't see that it can be altered either. I wasn't aware that you could on the D500 though either

Yup, got the PV button as single point AF, the back joystick button press as Group AF and the AF-ON for my BBF as 25-point Dynamic, on the D500 :)
Ahh yes, sorry misunderstood what you meant. Thought you meant to be able to switch from AF-C to AF-S

That sounds similar to what my buddy with the D500 is doing... This is starting to sound like I'm build an (extremely flimsy) case for a pro body for wildlife shooting! :police:
