My Nikon D7200 is constantly splattering my sensor, with oil I assume. I've read a few reviews online that state it can be guilty of being over-oiled during build. I clean it after every trip now and im sure ive scratched the sensor (top left of photo. This was cleaned a few hours before this photo was taken. The camera is only less than 6 months old and it was bought as a grey import from E-Finity.
Can anyone advise on sending it back or getting it repaired? Im fed up with it now!!

Has there been any recalls for it maybe there are more D7200s tat do the same, have a quick look on google, see if it shows a problem and if it can be sent in for repair.

That's nowhere near fit for purpose, what does the vendor have to say?

I've got a 3 year old low mileage (<5K actuations) D7200 as a back-up body, I've never had any issues like this at all.

As above you need to contact the sellers it should not do that.

I've e-mailed E-infinity and await their response.
Has anyone had any dealings with E-infinity with regards to returning Grey imports for repair or replacement?

So you have damaged the sensor and want them to repair, should have been in contact when it was just oil. Welcome to the world of grey imports and warranty (warranties cover faulty gear and not user damage)

Mike

No I don't want them to repair the sensor, I want them to repair the oil problem. The sensor damage is a result of my cleaning the oil which is their problem.

Are you sure that this is oil and not normal dust?
Do you regularly change lenses 'in the field'?
Have you noticed smearing when you clean the sensor?

Looking at the spots, they have a certain look which points to oil, according to on line experts. I don't really change the lens no.

i think that they might cover the oil leak/splatter but not the scratch on the sensor as this was caused by you.

Right simple answer you bought from e.infinity so you must either have paid by PayPal or credit card ,with either you have the option to reject the goods and claim your cash refunded and with PayPal the seller has to do the return postage . Do give them the opportunity to replace the item though if that’s the answer.

And btw the D7200 has no low pass filter ,so I wouldn’t say a word about cleaning it yourself

Thinking this myself, whether it had one wouldn't make a difference if you scratch the surface of the sensor
You wouldn't scratch the surface of the sensor though because the sensor surface isn't exposed.

PayPal disputes have to be made within 180 days IIRC.

Section 75of consumer credit act (Credit Card protection) may cover you, but only if payment was made direct to e-Infinity. If via PayPal or other third party payment mechanism you may be SoL.

Welcome to the wonders of personal imports. You’ve bought from a Hong Kong company so no U.K. consumer protections apply.

Not looking to good really, but don't e-infinity have a UK based warehouse with office, if that's the case and it came from there, then it is covered.....or is it?

its still worth putting in a claim ,even if it gets knocked back these companies dont like bad publicity .and as for the sensor I was under the impression it was easier to damage them than the ones with a low pass filter ,just something I read in passing once

I messaged Einfinity and they have responded immediately. I have the option to send it to their UK address or have it looked at by a recognised repairer and they will reimburse.

Good result(y), keep us updated with progress.

Whether they will cover the scratched sensor is another matter. Hope it all works out okay.

While eInfinity have responded satisfactory... my point still remains that you are are at the whims of the company and have limited recourse under U.K. Consume Legislation which was what the post I responded to was about!

I wonder how many UK distributors would have responded at the same speed and in the same way after the user had had the camera for 6 months?

probably one,john lewis :D

agreed, which is why people on here who have had positive experiences with companys like Panamoz,E-infinity Hdew and Digital Rev have recommended them . I have had very good experience of customer service with John Lewis though.

I agree with you there... there are some good companies out there, but with parallel / personal imports my poin5 is that caveat emptor is more important than ever.

My whole point wasn’t to criticise eInfinity or parallel importers / personal imports generally, but to dispel the “don’t worry PayPal / your credit card will cover you” myth that was being portrayed.

Now perhaps this line of debate in the thread could be put to bed, I regret even mentioning it now!

After looking it up ,yes buyer beware, never did Latin at school, did french a bit though
acheteur méfiez-vous :D

I noticed my d7200 sensor is covered in ‘stuff’ when I did some long exposures a few weeks ago. I usually use it for sport and short at fast shutter speeds and wide apertures so not usually a problem.

I’d be interested to see what Nikon say about this.... mine needs to be looked at I think as well.

What does the 'stuff' look like? Dust marks are always darker. If they're brighter speckles, that could be noise or hot pixels related to long exposures. Suggest check specifically for dust.

As its a grey import, it hasn't been sent to Nikon. A brief internet search will pull up other experiences from users of this model.

Thanks HoppyUK - let me check.... I'll try and post a photograph of the state of the sensor and see what's what.

Its now been 7 weeks of the 8 weeks maximum EInfinity told me it would take to repair. After a couple of enquiry e-mails, they have responded saying they will have my camera back by the end of the month, but if they cant, they will exchange it for a refurbed model with warranty. I have demanded that I need a camera for 14th Sept as I have a trip to NYC. I will also be demanding that if they do send a refurb model, it needs to be in better condition with less shutter count.

Have they mentioned the scratches ?
